Cal Kerr, Chairperson elders@thepeopleschurch.com A NOTE FROM OUR SENIOR PASTOR... As a friendly nod to our Reformation heritage, I m wearing my liturgical kilt today. While my family is Scottish (descended from the MacDonald and Cowan clans), the tartan I am wearing is the clergy tartan for the Kirk of Scotland. The word tartan refers to a woolen cloth woven in one of several patterns of plaid, especially of a design associated with a particular Scottish clan. While there are no official rules for tartan use, one who chooses to wear a particular tartan is generally identifying with that clan or profession. The Presbyterian Church traces its historic roots through the Kirk of Scotland, where this clerical tartan is widely used and accepted as the occupational tartan. Reformation Sunday is traditionally celebrated the Sunday closest to Oct. 31, the day Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenburg Cathedral. BURCHAM HILLS BIBLE STUDY Pastor Andrew leads a weekly Bible study of Judges from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. each Thursday, on the fourth floor at Burcham Hills, 2700 Burcham Dr. in East Lansing. 8 SERVE HOLIDAY FOOD BASKETS Our Community Engagement Ministry looks forward to helping families in the greater Lansing area have a holiday meal on Thanksgiving and Christmas. They are looking for drivers to help deliver this year s baskets. Special offertory envelopes will be included in the Nov. 6 bulletin to support this important annual ministry effort. EDGEWOOD VILLAGE PARTNERSHIP: THANKSGIVING FOOD BASKETS For the past two years, a dedicated group of 10 families from The Peoples Church have provided holiday food baskets for 10 Edgewood Village families as part of our Community Engagement Ministry s Edgewood Village Partnership. It would be great if we could expand this effort to include more Edgewood families in need. Each church family shops for groceries (protein, fresh fruit, veggies) from a specific list and then delivers those groceries to Edgewood Village Activity Center on the assigned day and time. Each shopper should expect to spend approximately $65. If interested in providing a Thanksgiving Food Basket, contact Barb Dunlap at bdunlap1953@gmail.com no later than Nov. 7. TIES, UMBRELLAS & GLASSES: COLLECTION FOR NYAKA Pastor Andrew and Rachell Pomerville are traveling to Uganda Nov. 23 to Dec. 3 on a personal missionary visit with the Nayaka AIDS Orphans Project. As part of their visit, they will deliver needed goods: men s neck ties, reading glasses for knitting grandmothers (all magnifications) and compact umbrellas for mothers who carry their babies on their backs in the hot sun. You can assist in this collection by placing donations in the baskets in the main sanctuary. Please remove packaging on price tags if applicable. SNOW PANTS Snow pants are often badly needed for children in grades K-6. Our Community Engagement Ministry is collecting new or gently used snow pants, or funds to purchase them. Contact Lary Hill at OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD The WPC s Phoebe Circle once again sponsors Operation Christmas Child. Shoe boxes may be picked in the Northwest Entrance each Sunday.
