2 HOMECOMING MESSAGE 2016 It is a pleasure to have you celebrate our Annual Homecoming Day with us. We are delighted to have former members and friends join with us for this grand occasion. As you may have heard or read, our theme for this year is Moving Forward in Faith, Greater is Coming! We feel the faith that you share with us and we are reciprocating, for that is the command of Christ Jesus. We are delighted to have Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr. Pastor Emeritus of the Riverside Church New York City, returning to preach for our Homecoming Services. This year, we welcome, for the first time to Mt. Calvary, Dr. Dontѐ L. Hickman, Sr. Pastor of the Southern Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD, who will preach all three nights for our Revival Services. We hope that you are able to be with us for all of our services. How is your faith walk? Are you trusting in the power of God? Do you believe that greater is really coming? I trust that you believe that for yourselves and for your love ones. This is a wonderful time of the year to be joining with family and friends. As we celebrate Homecoming, we hope that you will not only enjoy the spiritual food, but we want you to enjoy the physical food as well. We have prepared a delicious meal. Come and enjoy it with us. There is plenty of home cooked food, prepared with lots of love. Our Homecoming Committee has put forth extra effort to ensure that there is sufficient food for everyone. Again, it is so good to see each of you. Let us continue to move forward in faith, trusting that greater is coming. That is the promise of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Yours in Christ, Leon Grant, Pastor 2

9 Responsive Reading Moving Forward in Faith, Greater Is Coming! Homecoming Litany Leader: God of grace, God of love, God of new mercies, You are the source of every good and perfect gift. As we celebrate Homecoming, we reflect on our journey at Mount Calvary, rejoice because it is good when brothers and sisters dwell together in unity, and we rest assured that while moving forward in faith, greater is coming. Congregation: As a church family, we stand remembering Your unending faithfulness, which Has brought us this far by faith. Leader: Whether we are from near or far, we are united by God s love, by familiar hymns, and by the strength of our shared worship experiences rooted in our tradition. Congregation: We reach back to our rich heritage and draw strength as we move forward in faith. Leader: O God, may the precious memories of this branch of Zion and this reunion of family and friends keep us united in a common commitment to Your will, Your ways, and Your work. Congregation: We celebrate, with expectancy, that greater is coming. Let us remember to love one another, as Christ has loved us. All: As we stand remembering the place of our godly heritage, we proudly honor our past, offer praise for our present, and await the promise of our future. Keep us forever in Your path, we pray. Amen. Prepared by: Reverend Chastity Johnson 9

12 Announcements September 12-September 19, 2016 MONTHLY FOCUS Community Outreach But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, and who is my neighbor? Luke 10:29 Who is my neighbor? I do not know his name, says Jesus in essence. He is anyone toward whom you are neighborly. He is anyone who lies in need at life s roadside. He is neither Jew nor Gentile; he is neither American nor Non-American; he is neither black nor white. He is a certain man any needy man on one of the numerous Jericho roads of life. Jesus defines a neighbor, not in a theological definition, but in a life situation. Martin Luther King Jr. said, The good neighbor looks beyond the external accidents and discerns those inner qualities that make all men human and, therefore, brothers. Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love. A Moment in Black History September 12, Dr. Mae C. Jemison becomes first African American woman to travel in space. 13 Celebration of Giving Litany MINISTER: It is now time for us to share in giving. Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because all we have comes from God. According to Deuteronomy 8:18, it is God who gives us the power to get wealth. MINISTER: Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because God commands us. Malachi 3:10 states that we are to bring the full tithe into God s storehouse. MINISTER: Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because God said in Luke 6:38, to give and He would give back to us a more abundant blessing. MINISTER: Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because 2 Corinthians 9:7 states that God loves a cheerful giver. ALL: Thank you Lord, for the privilege of giving. We are excited about paying the tithe and giving the offering. We know that you are faithful to your promises. Therefore, we trust you in faith to do what you have said. AMEN! 13

23 FROM THE EVANGELISM MINISTRY FOUR SIMPLE LAWS God is holy and just: For God shall bring every work into judgment, With every secret thing, Whether it be good or whether it be evil (Ecclesiastes 12:14). The wages of sin is death: Sin is the transgression of the Law (1 John 3:4). God is rich in mercy: But God, who is rich in mercy, For his great love wherewith He loved us (Ephesians 2:4). Eternal life is in Jesus Christ: For God so loved the world, That he gave his only begotten Son, That whosoever believes in Him Should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). A Model Prayer of Repentance God, please forgive me for sinning against You. I understand that, according to Your Law, I deserve to go to hell. However, You are not willing that I perish. Thank you that Jesus suffered and died for me And rose again on the third day. I now repent and yield myself to Him to be my Lord and Savior. I will read Your Word daily and obey what I read. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen. The Evangelism Ministry Team Meetings, open to all, are in recess until Sept. 15, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. in Room 207, Houston G. Brooks Education Building.

34 It was on Easter Sunday in 1987, when Reverend Hickman accepted Christ as his personal Savior, and was baptized and fellowshipped into the Gillis Memorial Christian Community Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Reverend Hickman preached his initial sermon on May 2, 1990 and was ordained in August Pastor Donté Hickman is a remarkable example of what faith in God can do. Having been raised in a single parent home in Edmondson Village under tremendous peer pressure, it seemed as if Reverend Hickman would become another statistic. He was expelled from three High Schools, living a life that was destined for failure. Nevertheless, with the help of God, the church, his faithful mother, and an inner determination, he turned his life around starting with passing the G.E.D. examination without any preparation or success beyond the tenth grade. On May 2, 1994, Reverend Hickman earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. On June 6, 1997, he earned a Master of Divinity Degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. On May 8, 2006, Reverend Hickman earned the Doctor of Ministry Degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Recognizing the need for a new standard and mind-set for ministry leadership in today s culture, Reverend Hickman enrolled in the Executive Master of Business Administration program at the Sellinger School of Business of Loyola College in Maryland. Reverend Hickman has studied abroad in South and Southern Africa during the Centennial Celebration of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He has achieved certification in Clinical Pastoral Education at the Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, during the summer of the Olympics. Reverend Hickman has served as the Assistant to the Pastor of Gillis Memorial Christian Community Church of Baltimore, Maryland for three years and served as Senior Pastor in Philadelphia, PA for two years. On Sunday, October 6, 2002, Reverend Hickman was called and presented to the congregation as the new pastor of Southern Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Since becoming the Pastor of Southern Baptist, the church has experienced phenomenal growth- spiritually, numerically, and financially. With the implementation of a vision and mission, Reverend Hickman led the church in a million dollar renovation, initiated a strong marketing program through television and radio, acquired over 100 abandoned houses and vacant property to develop senior citizen and multifamily affordable housing, a Transformation Center to minister to people suffering from HIV/AIDS, Mental Health, Workforce Development Training, an Early Childhood and Youth Empowerment Center, and other amenities and ministries that impact people spiritually and socially. Rev. Hickman has also expanded the church through multi-site ministry with three locations and five live worship services, in which he preaches every Sunday. Reverend Hickman is a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., where he has served as Chaplain for the distinguished Pi Omega chapter. As a community leader and entrepreneur, Reverend Hickman was appointed by the honorable Mayor Martin O Malley to serve as one of the Housing Commissioners for the Housing Authority Board of Baltimore City. In 2012, Governor O'Malley appointed Pastor Hickman to the Maryland Port Authority Commission where he continues to serve faithfully. Reverend Hickman has also recently written a book entitled, The Power of Being Underestimated: Allowing the Negatives to Work For Your Good. Reverend Donté L. Hickman is married to Danielle Chere' Curtis and they are the proud parents of two kingdompurposed children, Donté Lamont Hickman, Jr. and Dawson Luke Hickman.
