1 The Newsletter Valley Presbyterian Church April 2018 Valley Presbyterian Church is known for Love and Friendship a Voice of Help and Hope sustained by Faith and Worship walking with God to serve our community As the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And suddenly there was an earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone The angel said to the women, Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has raised, as he said.

2 Church News How is VPC doing? This is the second...or is it the third time I ve started to write this article? Seems like I keep hitting a delete key and whoops!!! Then I start all over again. I m asked this question so many times during the course of a week and, frankly the answer can change almost minute by minute. So, let me attempt a logical answer. Steering Committee: From almost every view point, VPC is doing very well. Despite a new water heater (thanks to Ron, Vern and Clint for their labors), we are doing quite well. Finances are within budget limits, programs are moving forward, planning for the Rummage Sale, Time and Talent auction, Sweets and Treats are going forward without any hitch. A Prayer List is being planned for VPC and will be made available to everyone. Pastor Search Committee: So far we have received seventeen resumes (or Personal Information Forms) and we have reviewed each one very carefully. For various reasons, a small group has been eliminated and, in some cases, the applicant has already accepted another position. In addition to the Personal Information Forms (PIF), the committee has been using the Internet to gain even more information. A number of applicants have been telephoned and our very first question: would you like to live in Mesquite? If the answer is positive, then we have a brief dialog, if negative we say thanks and move on. Progress is being made and we constantly ask for the Lord s guidance and wisdom. Albert: Thanks to so many people, Albert is becoming a real success story. He has gone from living in a cardboard box, scrounging food from waste bins to having a full-time job, living in an apartment, and have good fresh food everyday. He has been to COSTCO, basketball games, restaurants and homes. So many people have lent a hand. Albert is a legal resident in America however, his original residency papers have been lost or stolen. The next challenge is to get duplicate residency documents and help him establish an identity for work and driving purposes. On a more personal vein, I m appalled by the violence taking place across our great country. It seems like we are hearing more and more atrocious stories everyday. Wanton disregard for both life and law. It serves to remind me that Evil does exist and only through belief in Christ can we hope to survive. Please don t forget to pray for our police, firemen, first responders, our men and women at home and abroad who put their lives in harms way everyday so that we may live in such a great country and all Christians in peril worldwide. Everyone enjoyed the food and fellowship. Our devotion was called Ending the Blame Game. We learned that whenever someone hurts or frustrates us, we can decide whether to react in a godly or worldly fashion. No mater how much blame we attempt to offload onto others, the Lord is not misled by our maneuvering. He looks at the heart. Each of us is accountable to Him for both our attitudes and responses. Our next luncheon will be held April 12th at VJ s. Hope to see you there. Men s Group Luncheon The Men s Group meet the 3rd Tues of each month at Wolf Creek Golf Club restaurant. We are open to just about any line of discussion and always keep the Bible and its teachings in mind. We talk about other male members of the church, who are not there, so to protect your self you should show up. (ha, ha) In all honesty we re very low key, we love good jokes and whatever we may do to help out the church. We also plan different outings for this group. We toured the Mesquite Fire Station on one outing. Hope to see you there! Milt

5 Our Gatherings or mutual things of interest Results of the March 24 th Rummage/Crafts/Bake Sale: Our Annual Sale turned out to be a big success making $ Many people left with big smiles and were very pleased with their new treasures. A huge thanks to all who participated in setting up, bringing items and baked goods in, working the sale and cash boxes, and cleaning up after the sale. Many members assisted, too numerous to mention but all amazing workers! Your help is greatly appreciated. Here are a few pictures from the sale. VPC Rummage Sale

VPC would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Gladys Irish for her many years of excellent VPC Newsletter publication. Just A Thought... Can you imagine being personally responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus? Luke tells us the Roman centurion saw something that led him to conclude that he had just overseen the execution of an innocent man (LUKE 23:47). Matthew adds that as the officer and his soldiers felt the earth shake violently under their feet they became terrified at the thought that they had just executed the Son of God (MATTHEW 27:54). In their world, Caesar was known as the son of God. But these Roman soldiers suddenly realized the emperor they answered to was nothing like Jesus. Entrusted with all power and authority in heaven and on earth, His death revealed the loving heart of His Father. Imagine being the centurion reading what the apostle Paul later wrote to followers of Jesus in Rome. By this time, Jesus s death was being proclaimed as good news to everyone (Romans 1:1-17). Paul described Jesus s suffering and death as evidence of the God who continues to groan with us in our wrongs against Him, one another, and ourselves (Romans 8) Can we see ourselves kneeling with this Roman officer in grateful worship?
