1 252 Groups April , Week 3 Small Group, K-1 The Comeback Bible Story: The Comeback (Jesus Is Crucified, Buried, and Resurrected) John 18:12 20:23 Bottom Line: I can put others first because Jesus put me first. Memory Verse: Don t do anything only to get ahead. Don t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourself. Philippians 2:3, NIrV Life App: Humility putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve. Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated. Social: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (Small Groups, 15 minutes) Plug In What You Do: Ask kids about a time they got hurt: o What happened? o Who helped you? o Did you have to get a BAND-AID? A cast? What You Say: [Transition] Today in Large Group, we are going to hear about someone who had to do something that he knew would hurt, but he did it anyway because he loved us so much. 2 252 Groups April , Week 3 Small Group, K-1 Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (Small Groups, 25 minutes) *1. Easter Mobile What You Need: Easter cut out set, one set per child, yarn, Story of the Cross activity page What You Do: Hand out an Easter cut out set to each child. Discuss each mobile story picture one circle at a time before handing anything to the kids. o Palm Sunday: The people celebrated Jesus, hailing Him as King as He entered Jerusalem. o Washing of Feet: Jesus washed His disciples feet during His last meal with them, the last supper. Foot washing was a servants job but Jesus wants us to serve each other. He set an example for us by serving others while He walked on the earth. o Good Friday: Jesus was perfect but chose to die on the Cross for our sins because He loves us so much and because God wants to be our friend forever. We ll talk about this more while you re working on your craft. o Jesus in the Tomb: After Jesus died on the Cross, He was buried in a tomb and a big, heavy rock was rolled in front of the entrance to keep the tomb closed. o Easter: Jesus Is Alive! : After three days, dead in the tomb, Jesus came back to life. Jesus beat out death! Share the Gospel (refer to Family Gospel Presentation Packet for K-1) Hand out the first circle for the kids to color. While they are working, hold up the heart image from your Gospel presentation packet and talk about the God Loved section. Hand out the second circle for the kids to color. While they are working, hold up the Cross image from your Gospel presentation packet and talk about the God Gave section. Hand out the third circle for the kids to color. While they are working, hold up the chair image from your Gospel presentation packet and talk about the We Believe section. Hand out the fourth circle for the kids to color. While they are working, hold up the gift image from your Gospel presentation packet and talk about the We Receive section. Hand out the fifth circle for the kids to color. While they are working, answer any questions that the kids may have about the Gospel and ask them if they would like to invite Jesus into their hearts to be their forever friend. If any children would like to accept Christ, please wait for their parents arrival and allow their parents to be part of this special decision The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. 3 252 Groups April , Week 3 Small Group, K-1 2. One Day on the Hill of Calvary (application activity / review the Bible story) What You Need: One Day on the Hill of Calvary Activity Pages, glue sticks, scissors, crayons or colored pencils What You Do: Give each kid an Activity Page and a pair of scissors. Instruct kids to cut out the various scenes from the story. Provide help as needed and make sure kids don t cut out the strip of blank boxes. (Cut out a set of pictures for yourself to use for the story review.) Allow a few minutes to color the pictures after they ve been cut out. Hold up the first scene (crown of thorns) and read the caption to the kids. Ask kids to find the first scene in their own pile of pictures and place it over the first blank box in their strip of boxes. Then ask if a volunteer can find the second scene (Jesus on the cross). Instruct kids to all find the second scene and place it over the correct box. Continue with the rest of the pictures. Then let kids glue the scenes onto the strip of boxes in the correct order. KEY: 1. Pilate had a crown of thorns placed on Jesus head. 2. Jesus was hung on a cross and died. 3. Jesus was placed in a tomb with a stone in front of it. 4. Mary found the stone rolled away. 5. Jesus appeared to the disciples. What You Say: The story we heard today is the most important story in the Bible. It s the reason we are here at church today. When Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead, He made it possible for us to go to heaven to live with Him forever. When He died on the cross for us, He showed us that [Bottom Line] I can put others first because Jesus put me first. Easter is the day we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead and showing everyone that He is stronger than anything even death. [Make It Personal] (Tell kids about an Easter tradition you have that helps you remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us.) We should be thankful to Jesus because He went through so much for us. Jesus put us first when He went to the cross and died for our sins. He didn t have to die for us, but He chose to. [Make It Personal] (Tell kids about how it makes you feel that Jesus put us first on the cross.) When people choose to put us first, it makes us feel like they care about us and value us. Someone might even have a big smile on their face like the smiles on these paper plates when you put them first. Jesus gave us the ultimate example of showing love to others by putting them first. This week, remember that [Bottom Line] I can put others first because Jesus put me first. There are lots of things we can do in our everyday lives at school and at home that show others that we want to put them first like sharing with friends or letting others go ahead of us in line. This week, try to remember to put others first every day The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. Adapted by (jpaganini/mbcloudoun/4.16). 3
4 252 Groups April , Week 3 Small Group, K-1 Pray and Dismiss What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Tell kids to hold their pointer finger in the air as a number one sign while you pray to remind them that Jesus loved them first. What You Say: This week you learned the most important lesson you will ever learn that Jesus died for us and rose from the dead to be our Savior. There is nothing that matters more than that! The amazing fact that Jesus died and then rose again was the most loving thing anyone has ever done. It shows us that [Bottom Line] I can put others first because Jesus put me first. Jesus first loved me. Let s pray and thank God for loving us so much. While we pray, hold a number one finger in the air to show Jesus that we want to put others first this week. Jesus, thank You for dying on the cross for us. Thank You for loving us enough to give up everything to come to earth and show us what it looks like to live a perfect life. Help us remember this week to put others first and show them your love. Amen. Remember to wish parents a Happy Easter during pick up The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. 5 Cross Activity Page K-1 - God s Family Gospel Presentation If a child is interested in accepting Christ as their Savior, please ask them to wait until their parent arrives so that their parents can participate with their child during this time. What You Need: God s Family Images (heart, cross, chair, gift box) What You Say: Today is Easter, but do you remember what happened three days before Easter? (show the cross). That s right, Jesus died on the Cross. Do you know WHY He died on the cross? Let me tell you. Have you ever done anything wrong? Like hit your brother or sister or not listen to your parents? Well, hitting your sibling or not listening to your parents is disobeying God. The Bible has a special word for when we disobey God. It s called sin. Even if no one else sees you doing something wrong, God still knows when we sin. Our sin keeps us apart from God. Sin means that we can t be friends with God because God can t be around sin. God Loved Sin is really serious to God. But because God loves us (heart image), He sent Jesus to fix our broken friendship with God. Our memory verse from this month reminds us of God s love. Can you help me say our memory verse together? God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son. John 3:16. God loved you before you were born. He created you! God Gave Do you know how Jesus fixed it? (cross image) Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for all of our sin so that we could be forgiven. Jesus is the only one who ever walked on the earth and lived a perfect life. He s the only one who didn t deserve death because He never sinned. He died on the cross for us because he loves us so much and wanted us to still be able to be friends with God. When Jesus died, He took the punishment for every bad thing we will ever do, once, and for all. Jesus fixed our friendship with God by dying on the Cross. Isn t Jesus amazing! Only God could fix our relationship with Him by sending His Son Jesus. Jesus really is the Son of God. He died so you and I could be forgiven and be friends with God forever. That isn t the end of the story though. Three days after Jesus died for each of us on the Cross, Jesus beat out death and came back to life again! Jesus is amazing! God gave us the gift of His Son, Jesus. We Believe But when you receive a gift, what do you have to do first? You open it. God said you could open His gift by believing in Jesus. Believing means to trust. Trusting is kind of like this chair. (hold up chair image) When you sit in a chair, you trust that it will hold you up. To open the gift that God gave you, you just need to talk to God in prayer. We Receive Hold up the gift box. John 3:16 tells us we get to be Jesus forever friend when we believe in Jesus. That means we get to spend forever and ever with God. And once you receive this gift, it can never be taken away. There is NOTHING you can do to lose your place in God s family! Would anyone like to talk to Jesus in prayer and become a part of God s family by believing in Him?

11 MEMORY VERSE Don t do anything only to get ahead. Don t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves. Philippians 2:3, NIrV PUTTING OTHERS FIRST BY GIVING UP WHAT YOU THINK YOU DESERVE. WEEK 3 BOTTOM LINE I can put others first because Jesus put me first. K-1 st Thank You Note This week, we learned that Jesus gave His life for us to have a relationship with God. Get a sheet of paper and some crayons. Write out or draw your thank you note to Jesus for what He did for you. Ask Him for the strength to follow His example and put others first in your life. KNOW that God does more for you than He ever asks you to do for someone else. R ead Philippians 2:3 Pick Three Pick three things you will do this week to put others first. You might let another person have what you want. Maybe you share your dessert with someone who likes the same thing. Whatever three things you pick, decide ahead of time that you will do them this week. LOOK for ways to fulfill your three things this week. Comic Strip Draw a comic strip about someone who put others first. What do the comic panels look like? What do the people say? Use as much detail as you like. Share your comic with your family and friends. THANK God for the ability to put others first. Sing It! With an adult, read Philippians 2:3. After you read the verse, make the verse into a song or chant. Sing it over and over to help you remember it. ASK God for the courage to put others first.
