When German Martinez of Nicaragua first became sponsored in 2006, he and his sponsor wrote back and forth to learn more about each other. My love for my sponsor and his family grew as I saw how interested they were in me and my family, said German. RELATIONSHIPS are central to Jesus teaching about how to LOVE PEOPLE, and they are essential to the way we believe children in poverty should be served. German s father led their family in prayer over the sponsor s health and salvation. Their letter writing continued, and German received the news that his sponsor was well enough to come and visit him. When my son s sponsor arrived, I was excited, said German s mother, Jamileth. We hugged each other and showed lots of affection. A few months after the visit, German learned his sponsor had passed away. My family cried, said German. The family s grief softened when they learned German s sponsor had accepted the Lord before his death. We were so thankful the Lord heard our prayers, said Jamileth. German had kept all of the letters and photos his sponsor sent him over the years. Today he is able to look at them fondly and add new letters to his collection, this time from his sponsor s daughter. She is now sponsoring German, continuing her father s legacy.
