7 Leading up to the split, cultural differences developed between the Byzantine Empire in the East and the lands that were added that were once part of the Western Roman Empire. The Early Byzantine Empire: Disagreements Split Christianity What two churches emerged from the split in Christianity? Why? Roman Catholic and Eastern/Greek Orthodox formed in 1054 A.D. Before the split (schism) there was only one group of Christians who were led by the pope followed by bishops and priests. After the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, the city of Rome remained the home of the pope and the center of Christianity.
