1 May 2016 Volume 9 Issue 5 Evangelism Team Dispenses Information and Invitations Motto The loving place that is Reaching, Growing, and Sending people with Christ. Vision Fellowship is a Christian ministry that glorifies God and transforms humanity by doing justice, living mercy, and walking humbly with God. Mission Fellowship is called to make disciples by leading people into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ and equipping them for the work of ministry in the church, community, and world. On Saturday, April 16, the Evangelism Ministry Team led members into two communities near the church in a strategic plan to get the word out about Fellowship s new bus ministry. Members canvassed Edmonton Heights and the apartment complex Brookhaven, just west of the church. They left invitations for a meeting with parents interested in having their children picked up and transported to Fellowship and introduced the forthcoming bus ministry. The Lord provided a lovely, perfect-weather Saturday morning for this effort. Destiny Brown, Zack Overton, Seth Sigmon, and Dezmyn Coleman participated alongside adults Christopher and Tonya Gaines, George Grayson, Linda Burruss, Michelle Hicks, Joyce Pettis Temple, and Brenda Bunley. Nathaniel Jackson transported the group on the church bus. Photo Credit: Christopher Gaines

3 Honoring A Servant Leader: Elder Mary Mitchell How can the ways that Mary Mitchell has provided service and leadership to Fellowship Presbyterian Church (FPC), especially to the monthly church newsletter, be numbered? Without attempting to rank the significance of all the tasks she has managed and continues to do, we can only begin. Mary has served as Clerk of Session for six years, during which time her minutes received the highest commendations from the Presbytery evaluating committee. Because of her leadership as clerk, all members now have a massive Manual of Administrative Operations. The manual was a multiple years effort to provide session and the congregation an invaluable tool for the numerous operations of our church. Alongside being Clerk of Session, which is far more than taking minutes at session meetings, Mary actively served on ministry teams, including Stewardship and Finance and Evangelism. She worked in the background with several team conveners. When the church was without a secretary, she printed the bulletin. She has a true eye for the needs of the church on a spiritual level as well as on a practical level, and has either contributed furnishings or led the way to acquiring them, such as the pieces in the secretary s office and the round tables and comfortable chairs in the fellowship hall and the choir room. On the spiritual preparation side, Mary has attended Bible study at FPC and is a dedicated student in the Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) classes. BSF is an international and interdenominational study of the Bible. Those who work closely with Mary observe her spiritual bearing. The biblical teachings that she takes in govern and guide her interactions with church members and working teams. While she was in the second of two consecutive terms as elder, Mary took on the significant leadership task of organizing and acquiring a 501c3 designation for the F.A.I.T.H. Initiative, which grew out of FPC but, as a non-profit organization, is separate from and independent of FPC. The proposal received the 501c3 designation on the first request to the IRS. Mary is now the president of the board, and has Page 3 recently been appointed to another organization s board. Ears and eyes should be kept open for the community service projects on the horizon, coming from the F.A.I.T.H Initiative. The Kindle classes are one such project originating from the F.A.I.T.H. Initiative. These classes were Mary s idea as a way to introduce adults to basic computer functions in a non-threatening way. The classes are very successful, and have as many students as she can manage. Although this project is not limited to Fellowship members, the majority of the attendees are Fellowship members. Of all the service that Mary unselfishly provides, perhaps the monthly HAND newsletter is chief among them. Fellowship has had newsletters over the years of its existence, but under Mary Mitchell s leadership, we have consistently had a newsletter for the last nine years. One of the best things about being on the Newsletter Team, aside from Mary s quiet work ethic, is that the team produces the newsletter without meetings! Information sharing among the team is conducted via or an occasional phone call. Who doesn t need one less meeting!? Mary supplies HAND content as needed, including the Red Letter Days; assembles a newsletter draft of all submissions; and participates in the editing process. The final product is a team effort, but she is the leader. The newsletter is invaluable to our membership as a source of information about what is occurring in the life of the church from youth activities to ministry teams to What is Session Doing column. From time to time, compliments to the newsletter are printed for all to read. HAND is distributed far and wide, even internationally, since it is always sent to our partner church in South Africa, where Reverend Makke Masingo is retired pastor. By all accounts, non -active members and friends of Fellowship value the information they receive in HAND and credit it for keeping them in touch with home. Although we think Mary might shoot her team, metaphorically speaking, for this tribute about which she knew nothing, the HAND team is honored to work with her and blessed to observe her dedication. The team values her leadership and her quiet but persistent way of providing service. The team salutes Mary Mitchell! Submitted by the HAND Newsletter Team

4 Fellowship Presbyterian Women Attend 2016 Spring Gathering By Joyce Pettis Temple Page 4 Eleven women and Reverend Bentley represented Fellowship Presbyterian Church as one of the nine churches attending the 2016 Spring Gathering on Tuesday, April 19, at Covenant PC. In participation, as well, Fellowship was excellently represented. Sarah Ford continues her term as vice moderator of the North Alabama Presbytery women s group; Betty Dixie continues as a member of the Search Committee; Sharon King is re-elected to the Together in Service Committee; Gladys Bracy continues as treasurer for the group; and Haley Bone assisted in serving the communion. Reverend Bentley assisted Covenant s pastor Hal Oakley in officiating the communion service. Under the theme Simple Gifts, two organizations were selected for recognition. The Presbyterian Home for Children (PHC) and RiahRose, founded by Carolyn Jackson, received the gift of the offering. RiahRose Home for Children is a dedicated service to pregnant women and women with young children... [It] has been effective in providing an environment for women and children to reach their goals and live without government assistance. Those assembled in the sanctuary were gifted by the tender and tough narratives about the children of the PHC and the women of RiahRose. Carolyn shared numerous stories of assistance along with explaining the challenges and goals of RiahRose for the women who find their way to her or are brought to her. Bettye Dixie introduced her sister Carolyn to the group. Following business reports and updates, installation of leaders, and announcements, a delicious lunch and fellowship concluded the half day meeting. In Loving Memory of Mrs. Clara Roberson Bryant Clara Bryant, a long time member of Fellowship PC, transitioned on April 21, Her funeral service was held on Thursday, April 28, 2016, at Fellowship. Interment was at Valhalla Memory Gardens. When you're in your place of detention, instead of being sad, get glad.... God has put you there to get your mind right. Sermon: God of Another Chance January 25, 2015.

7 Morning Reflection Submitted by Reverend Gregory Bentley Page 7 Even so, she was immediately assailed by contrary emotions. She realized that she didn t want to forgive. I had such awful thoughts that I couldn t say them out loud, because they would make Jesus want to drink gin straight out of the cat dish. It didn t take long for me to realize that I didn t want to forgive, either. As a local church pastor I preached at least one sermon on forgiveness every year. Forgiveness is The Subject Which Must Be Regularly Named, since it is hands-down the Bible s number one relational issue. Year after year, however, I sensed that I wasn t particularly qualified to talk about forgiving other people. That s because I had never been seriously wounded or betrayed. Maybe I would make it through my entire adult life unscathed. But as sportscaster Lee Corso might put it: Not so fast, my friend. From out the blue came a handful of shattered relationships. I had never felt such anguish. The cumulative pain robbed me of my sleep, my optimism, and my hope that life would ever feel safe and normal again. I began to empathize with author Anne Lamott s lifelong wrestling match with unforgiveness. For years she had gone around saying, I am not one of those Christians who are into forgiveness. I am one of the other kind. That remark had always earned her a laugh. But then it started to be too painful. Lamott decided to will herself into forgiving people who had harmed her either directly or indirectly over the years. Then she remembered that the theologian C.S. Lewis had once said that if we really want to learn how to forgive, we should probably start with something easier than the Gestapo. So she decided to forego her major enemies and shoot lower. Years went by. I was imprisoned by my own resentments. I either rationalized my emotions or tried valiantly to bury them. I once heard someone say that the resources of heaven are always aligned with those who choose to forgive or who at least pray for the power to desire to forgive. So as an act of raw obedience, I decided to speak aloud the names of the people who had hurt me: I forgive So-and-So. My heart wasn t really in it, and I felt kind of foolish. But for several days I kept at it nonetheless. And then the strangest thing happened. I felt an inward stab of kindness. My heart softened. That s how it starts. I gradually began to experience a power beyond myself. Every now and then, I even began to wish those individuals well. Lamott discovered that the more she opened herself to the possibility of God s help, the more her heart began to thaw. She began to grasp that we can actually forgive others. We can even, for God s sake, forgive ourselves. Wise people have pointed out that forgiveness means giving up all hope of having a different past. Why would we ever do such a thing? So we can welcome the hope of having a different future. Written by Glenn McDonald Director, Mission Integration ASCENSION Ministry Service Center

Demetrius Farley is directing. Alabama A & M University Concert Choir Performs Spring Concert By Joyce Pettis Temple The women wore long, satin maroon dresses, and the men were outfitted in black tuxedos. They walked with poise and purpose from the back of the sanctuary in Fellowship Presbyterian Church into the choir stand. Pianist Dr. Mira Kruja and maestro Dr. Horace R. Carney took their positions. The Alabama A & M University Concert Choir, primed for their annual spring event, was ready, and Fellowship Presbyterian Church was hosting. It was a perfect concert to many listening ears. With four divisions of selections in the approximately 1 ½ hour program, predictably, the classics, such as Gratias agimus tibi (Antonio Vivaldi) were featured in Part I. Part II included America the Beautiful (Darmon Meader) among three biblically inspired selections. The 67 th Psalm (Charles Ives), with its orderly dissonance, and Alleluia (Jake Runstadt) evoking echoing angels, were arguably the most difficult pieces of the entire program. After a brief intermission the program moved to songs of a different temperament in Part III, where selections from Gershwin s Porgy and Bess were featured, including the challenging piano number Ritmo, very ably played by Jamilla Harrison and Dr. Mira Kruja. The greatly anticipated Negro spirituals and gospel selections that comprised Part IV were well worth the wait. On some of these selections, Dr. Carney provided piano accompaniment and graduating senior and baritone vocalist Demetrius Farley assumed the mantle of conductor. One bass singer, almost front and center in the choir stand, was Fellowship s very own Galik Horton-Burks. The church family is very proud of his success in the university choir. Overall, the evening of music produced by the concert choir was emotionally stirring, compelling, and inspiring. Perhaps next year, if the Music Ministry of Fellowship Learning Quest Class at Fellowship Submitted by Bob Wilson Learning Quest(LQ) is a 501c3, all-volunteer organization offering lifelong learning educational and enrichment programs for all ages. 10 Page 10 Humble beginnings yield impressive results for Alabama Earth Care Congregation Fellowship Presbyterian embodies community service in its earth care ministry Ap ril 12, 2016 Scott O Neill Communications Associate, Mission Communications Presbyterian Mission Agency LOUISVILLE In October 2013, Fellowship Presbyterian Church (FPC) in Huntsville, Alabama started their witness for earth care conservation by simply changing their light bulbs. In March 2014, they became a PC(USA) Earth Care Congregation (ECC). This year they will hold Earth Day worship services as a recertified ECC, which includes an earth care mindset that permeates their congregation and is complemented by an impressive food distribution community outreach program. As PC(USA) Associate for Environmental Ministries, Rebecca Barnes, says, we recognize that earth care ministries do well to encompass issues of poverty and hunger alleviation, peacemaking, and more. Caring for all in God s creation include social justice. Fellowship Presbyterian Church is a relatively young church founded in the late 1950s. The congregation of nearly 300 members has a strong legacy of community involvement. Its nursery and kindergarten is believed to be the first African American churchrelated pre-school in Huntsville. In October 2013, member Dr. Ted Dixie, Sr. started researching energy-saving ideas for the approximately 20-year old church building. He called on the state-sponsored environmental agency and Huntsville Utilities (part of the Tennessee Valley Authority) to perform an energy audit. As one might expect, the utility responded with a comprehensive 30 -page recommendation, but that didn t mean the church was prepared, or had the resources at hand, to act on many of the recommendations. In October 2013, member Dr. Ted Dixie, Sr. started researching energy-saving ideas for the approximately 20-year old church building. He called on the state-sponsored environmental agency and Huntsville Utilities (part of the Tennessee Valley Authority) to perform an energy audit. As one might expect, the utility responded with a comprehensive 30- page recommendation, but that didn t mean the church was prepared, or had the resources at hand, to act on many of the recommendations. Dr. Dixie asked the utility company the best way to upgrade the church facilities, says Anthony Thompson, current chairperson of the Earth Care Committee at FPC. He started by single-handedly changing the types of light bulbs we used, and implementing motion-sensor lighting so that empty rooms wouldn t be lit. We put insulation on pipes, screening in the sanctuary and shades in high-sun areas really simple things that didn t cost a lot of money. Shortly thereafter, FPC implemented an earth care component into their older adult worship services, a group called the Golden Charmers. They added an earth care worship element to their youth ministry, and their Presbyterian Women and Men organizations, as well as their prayers, hymns and meditational readings. In March 2014, FPC received their initial Earth Care Congregation certification. Every single Earth Care Congregation has a unique story to tell and a special witness to share of how they are embodying God s call to care for creation in their own corner of the world, says Barnes. I am impressed with the ongoing ministry at FPC and thankful for all the saints engaged in ministry there. Today, FPC s devotion and commitment to earth care ministry is a congregational mindset. They include earth care components in all Sunday school, new member, leadership, and confirmation classes, sponsor an environmental education series that features guest speakers on earth care issues, implement electronic recycling and food waste management programs, and continue to review and audit the original list of energy recommendations from the utility company. Earth care ministry also includes hunger and poverty ministry, and Thompson and his colleagues are most proud of FPC s food distribution program. Every third Wednesday, in conjunction with a north Alabama food bank, member volunteers gather to prepare food packages for the hunger insecure in town, giving peace of mind to those unsure where their next meal might come from. We serve and minister to at least 96 families through our food distributions program, and we have a waiting list for more, says Thompson. We ve been doing it (Continued on page 11)

Your service to Christ and His church does not go unnoticed. (Continued from page 10) for three years and it just gets bigger each year. The effort that goes into preparing the food packages is very humbling, but it s a great time of fellowship and makes all of us in the congregation feel good. Getting involved in the church, and not just attending has opened so many doors and opportunities for me, I encourage anyone to serve, and truly become a servant for the Lord. They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.
