Harvest has begun, the mums and pumpkins are appearing and pumpkin spice everything has arrived in stores everywhere! I want to take this month s article as an opportunity to share with you the ministry that my husband Matthew Eaton and I have in Hampshire--New Morning Retreat Center. I have had the dream of owning and running a retreat center since 1993 when I stayed at the Carmelite House of Prayer in Carmel, California for several days. It was a simple house run by a religious order of nuns. It had a library, a chapel, comfortable living and dining room, as well as sleeping rooms and community bathrooms on the lower level for retreat guests. The main, upper level had beachfront facing windows across the entire front of the house. And it was just down the road from a wildlife sanctuary where you could hike and witness sea otters, sea lions and a variety of birds and other animals. Being in that quiet and beautiful space for several days was living water for my parched soul. Fast forward through seminary, ordination and multiple pastoral appointments. Matthew was getting burned out from his chaplaincy work at Loyola Hospital in Maywood, a Level I Trauma Center. As a family, we were getting tired of the noisy and congested urban environment. And so, in the fall of 2016, Matthew and I found the perfect property to begin making the dream of a retreat center a reality. It s a four-acre farm in Hampshire, Illinois. It s fairly central in our Annual Conference, a forty-minute drive from O Hare Airport, and although a few subdivisions are nearby, one definitely feels the quiet of the country when at New Morning. There are lots of retreat centers around, but they are primarily Roman Catholic and tend to be pretty institutional. We wanted our retreat center to be a place for rest and renewal for those in ministry, whether clergy or laity. We wanted it to feel like home. We wanted good, home-made food, with as much food from our garden or local farmers as possible. We wanted to share our belief in the body-mind-spirit connection, and offer a place to provide space to explore what that looks like. We also wanted this ministry to be open to all sorts of people from all faith traditions. We didn t want to limit this ministry to United Methodists or United Church of Christ folks, with whom we are connected. We love providing hospitality and have enjoyed hosting individuals and small groups from a variety of churches in the area. Right now, we ourselves do not provide retreat leadership, but look forward to doing so in the future. If you want to learn more, go to our web site at As we begin this new venture of ministry, we are doing all the work ourselves. We do not have any hired staff. We want to provide an affordable opportunity for spiritual renewal. The main farm house on our property is the retreat center and we live in the attached in-law quarters. We hope to eventually provide more sleeping space in the historic barn, but that will take time and capital. By hosting Air BnB guests, we are able to provide some support for this work at its inception. On Saturday, October 27 th, from 3 5 pm, you are invited to attend an Open House and Hymn Sing at our home, which is also New Morning Retreat Center. This is a fundraiser for our ministry, but you will be given a postcard in worship to attend free of charge. We would love to have you join us. There will be door prizes, a raffle, music and refreshments in the barn, but you will be able to explore the house and grounds as well. See you soon! Pastor Jenny

The Staff-Parish Relations Committee will meet with Rev. Park at 6:30 pm and the rest of the congregation is invited to the Church Conference at 7 pm. Please mark your calendars. 5 Church Happenings Page 5 Worship in October October 7th Worldwide Communion Sunday Pastor Jenny will be focusing on the mystery of God during her October sermon series. Using the book of Job, she will look at ways we can feel disoriented, deserted, silenced and restored in our relationship with God. Come and learn more about this challenging book!
