1 The United Methodist Church of Antioch THE MESSENGER The mission of the United Methodist Church of Antioch is to grow in faith, worship God following the teachings of Jesus Christ, and be instruments of God s love, through the Hol Spirit, as we reach out to our communit and the world. October 2017 Volume 1 Issue 9 A NOTE FROM OUR LAY LEADER We ve all heard of referring to an intelligent person as bright. I have never understood the correlation. What does a person s IQ have to do with their abilit to light up a room upon entering? Do onl the brains have the abilit to lift someone up in their darkest times? Did intelligence rescue us from the Dark Ages or necessit? I think the latter was a bigger contributor. Consider that the washing machine was invented b a woman who was smart enough to not want to go down to the river with a washboard. Light had nothing to do with it. If intelligence is defined as not doing anthing stupid, I guess most of us could never be considered for Mensa, the High IQ Societ or part of the intelligentsia. We shine b what we know onl when our knowledge translates to good deeds. There is a reference to light and knowledge in 2 Corinthians Chapter 4, look it up. In the same wa, let our light shine among others, that the ma see our good deeds and glorif our Father in heaven. 2 MISSION COMMITTEE Our Rainbow Covenant 2017 Yellow Project Band is U.S. based, Tree of Life Ministr, Rosebud, a Ministr to Native Americans, in Mission, South Dakota. The Tree of Life Ministr is a part of the working hands and feet of God to the Lakota Nation, who reside on the Rosebud Reservation. The feed, clothe, shelter and love to serve bod, mind and soul. The demonstrate His love, power and grace to a broken, hurting societ. More information is available at our table and poster in Wesle Hall. Donations will be accepted along with loose change from church offerings. 44 pairs of men s and women s socks have been donated to Socks for the Soul at Open Arms Mission. Please keep the socks coming! Thank ou. Your Mission Committee PARENTS DAY OUT PDO Teacher Our preschool has a position open in our two-ear-old classroom. If ou love working with oung children and are interested in appling or if ou would like to be a substitute, please contact the Director Kim Dodd at or at parentsdaout316@att.net. PDO Craft Fair We will be hosting a Fall Vendor/Craft Fair and Bake Sale at UMCA on Saturda, October 21, from 9 a.m. 3 p.m. We are looking for vendors and crafters, along with donations of baked goods. Proceeds from this event will go directl to PDO Christian Preschool. Please contact Angie at PDOCraftFair@gmail.com with an questions or for a booth application. 2

3 HANDICAPPED BATHROOM COMMITTEE UPDATE The Church Council, at their September meeting, voted to approve the Trustees motion for the proposed handicapped bathrooms. An amendment to the motion, that SK Construction not be hired nor work begun until the bid amount of $35, is secured, was also approved. Funds totaling $25, have been raised from the Capital Improvement and Endowment Fund, the Memorial Committee, the resale tables, and individual congregant s donations. The congregation s presence and input at the Sunda informational meeting and Church Council is greatl appreciated. The Handicapped Bathroom Committee Beverl Sheridan will be our organist at our concert on Saturda, October 14. The concert begins at 11 a.m. and everone is invited to attend. Newsletter deadline is the 15th of the month. We are also interested in an photos ou might have of church activities. Please note that articles submitted should be for the following month. Our Coffee Hour Fund is getting low. Thanks to all our coffee servers for providing our treats. However, we are running low on funds to bu coffee and paper supplies. Please consider giving a few dollars when ou go through the serving line. An offering dish is on the serving table. UNITED METHODIST MEN... On August 12 the United Methodist Men met with Pastor Char Hoffmann and her husband, Glenn, for breakfast at Grann s Restaurant on Grass Lake Rd. We motored b boat from Bert Kibbler s house to Grann s where we enjoed a wonderful breakfast with Pastor Char and Glenn. On September 9th we enjoed breakfast in the kitchen at church, and started a men s Bible Stud, called Quiet Strength b Ton Dung. We are off to a good start on a new ear. I got a call from Ann Brown and Connie Vaccaro about men s clothing. God s Resale Shop was not able to sell what the had and wondered if we might be able to take the clothing to the Veteran s Closet. I was able to deliver 30 suits, 10 top coats, at least 100 slacks and shirts, 5 bags of dress shoes, and 1 bag of hats. I would estimate the clothing to be worth $800. The men from the Veteran s Closet were so happ to be getting these things. Thank ou for making a difference. I will be attending the Spiritual Congress in Williams Ba, WI, September 16. I am looking forward to this retreat with other men in our conference. Men, mark our calendar for next ear. The Spiritual Congress will be the 3rd weekend in September. Joe Nance 3

4 Faith Communit Nurse, Gloria Stevens, retires! On August 27, St. Stephen Lutheran Church and UMCA had a retirement part to honor Gloria. We have been blessed b Gloria s ministr to our churches for over 5 ears. We wish Gloria man blessings and happiness as she starts on this new path. Direction Forward with the Parish Nurse Program. Both St. Stephen s and UMCA have met for man months to determine transition plans after Gloria s retirement. Man of the sub-ministries will continue with la folks talking the leadership. These are detailed in a pink brochure available at each church entitled Christian Wellness Ministr. Both churches heard recommendations from the FSN Finance Team that due to man obstacles at this time a Parish Nurse will not be hired. Church Council on September 12 accepted that recommendation. However, we will search for someone to lead the coordination of the man sub-ministries that have grown from the FSN program. Folks working for wellness in our churches will not be part of the Christian Wellness Ministr. If ou have donated to the Faith Communit Nurse Ministr, that mone will sta in the account and be used for future work of the Christian Wellness Ministr. Please call the church office to redirect an future donations to go to a different ministr of our choice. Special thanks to all for our support of the Faith Communit Nurse program over the ears. WOMEN S GATHERING 2017 WOVEN TOGETHER BY GOD SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28 9:00 A.M. 12 NOON First Baptist Church 401 N. Genesee, Waukegan This is an opportunit for women to get together, participate in activities, think about Christian Living, share in talking about the challenges, and look at was to experience God s Weaving Us Together to Live a Balanced Life.
