3 It is with great joy that I can now report that I am fully recovered and back at work minus one nasty kidney stone. I am most grateful to my clergy and lay colleagues who have covered for me in the two months that I was ill. They did a sterling job and as a result we did not have to change any of our service patterns. Thank you. You may know that we are part of Stratton Deanery, and Deanery Synod recently voted to reorganise the Deanery into three Benefices, with a 'house-for-duty' Missioner to work across the whole Deanery. This will mean that our current Benefice of 4 parishes and 8 churches will become a new Benefice of 6 parishes and 12 churches. We do not yet have a date when this will happen but I will keep you informed. Alongside this new structure the Deanery are working together on a two year programme of Accompanied Ministry Development (AMD) to look at ways we can discover God's Kingdom and Grow the church. This will involve lay and ordained ministers and worship leaders as well as our congregations and communities. This is an exciting opportunity for everyone to be involved in the development of ministry in our communities, demonstrating the love of God for all, and I encourage you to take part in this process. A we move into Autumn, October is the month we celebrate Harvest festivals in each of our parishes - thanking God for the bounty of his creation and remembering those who work on the land and at sea to bring in that harvest. 5 Marshgate WI From sheep to shawl wool has been used by mankind for thousands of years, but it hasn t always been as easy as walking into your local shopping centre and browsing in your friendly wool shop. Once the busy housewife would have carried her spindle everywhere she went, the only way to ensure she made the miles of yarn she needed to create family garments before Patons and Sirdar were even thought of. Sue Hambly, a member of Liskeard Spinners, brought it all home to Marshgate WI members when she visited Otterham & St Juliot Hall, bringing her spindle and fleece to their September meeting. She showed members how to create yarns by going back to basics, using a spindle and a wheel, and said she has even used dog hair to create some of her beautiful woollen garments! Members were then offered the chance to try their foot at spinning yarn on the wheel which is a lot harder than Sue made it look! Treat Yourself Day What could be better than a whole day of retail therapy in a nice warm hall, with a big choice of stalls to visit and a refreshment area serving delicious cakes and coffee? WI members worked hard to set up their Treat Yourself Day, the brainchild of president Liz Long, aiming to raise money for a good cause, but also to have a really enjoyable day. The hall was decked with colourful bunting and packed with stalls. Headliner at the event was Cornwall s well-known colour consultant Clare Greenwood, who was there to advise punters on how to achieve their best look, and arrived with her colourful display of fabric swatches and scarves. Other attractions included jewellery, craft items, gorgeous silk scarves and gifts, woollen goods, preserves and beauty products, while Debbie from Wadebridge s The Beauty Spot offered facials and a Tarot reader was there to tell ladies their fortunes. A huge raffle was held, and many visitors took part in the tombola at the event, which was planned as a recruitment and profile-raising exercise for the WI, but also to raise money for Cornwall Air Ambulance, who sent a teddy bear as a raffle prize. The organisers are still counting up money from the day before announcing how much they raised. Wendy Trevennor, Secretary Remember to check our website at especially the message board page, and meet us on Facebook Persecuted Christians in Pakistan Pakistan achieved independence in In 1956 it became an Islamic Republic, while at the same time guaranteeing freedom of religion and equal citizens rights. In 1971 East Pakistan became independent as Bangladesh, taking with it the majority of Pakistan's Hindus. So Pakistan became an increasingly Islamic state squeezing the smaller religious minorities. Under the governments of Ali Bhutto and Zia ul-haq the introduction of ever more stringent Islamic Laws transformed the country. Sharia Law was introduced by President Zia and reinforced by President Sharif in Since 1991 relations between Muslims and Christians (2% of the population) have been deteriorating. The introduction of the Blasphemy Laws are having devastating consequences for all minorities, isolating them from the rest of the population, especially Christians. Many are presently languishing in prison under this legislation which is open to very varied interpretation. Equally damaging is the abduction and forced conversion of women and girls. It is estimated that some 700 are abducted each year, often to be raped and then forced to marry Muslim men, which also involves forced conversion. New laws allow the government to monitor and close down NGOs, and any church not registered as an NGO will be considered illegal. Church activities are closely watched and reported on. On top of these harassments, the Christian churches face the added threats from Islamic militants, including the Taliban, with violence, bombings and threats with many killed and injured each year. Many Christians also suffer from institutionalised discrimination, with occupations seen as low, dirty and derogatory being officially reserved for Christians most of whom are from the poor classes. The scandal of the bonded workers in the brick making industry, where whole families end up becoming virtual slaves is well documented. Conversion to Christianity is growing, though the fear of being labelled apostate, which carries the threat of the death penalty, and certain ostracism in society, makes many hesitant to make a life changing decision for Christ. Prayers Thank God for the growth of the Church in Pakistan, and pray for its continued growth. Thank God for the leaders of the Church and for protection, strength and courage as they lead the spread of the gospel. Pray for the safety of all believers, and that the government both national and local, will ensure peace and safety for those being persecuted, especially at a local level. Pray for Bible translation. At present only 7 out of Pakistan's 70 languages has a New Testament or Bible translation. Pray for translation teams and for resources to be available. Pray for all who have fallen foul of the Blasphemy Laws, especially those in prison. Especially remember Aasiya Bibi for strength, faith, courage and good health as she and those like her continue their time in prison Pray that the Taliban will be driven out of the country.
