1 ST. BRENDAN CHURCH Share these articles with your friends online at 29 Rockaway Avenue San Francisco CA Tel. No. (415) Fourth Sunday of Easter April 22, 2018 Constructing A Bold Spiritual Infrastructure Our Sunday message series that we re calling, Bold Moves, is laying the groundwork for us to take the next step in obedience to God s desire for our lives. This week s message underscores the power of constructing a spiritual infrastructure that will support and sustain whatever bold move you end up making for God. While a spiritual foundation is essential for Christian discipleship, there are many ways to ground your faith. Here are a just four basic but bold steps that will provide a strong foothold for your spiritual life. 1. Set Priorities Children often stall at bedtime because they don t want to miss anything. As our society becomes increasingly frantic, insisting that happiness ensues from taking part in every possible activity, setting priorities for ourselves and our children is the only proper adult response. While prioritizing may sound simple, it s far from painless. It requires discipline to jettison extraneous pursuits. When it comes to strengthening your spiritual life, less actually is more. Sit down with your family and create a time budget. Set in stone the truly important things like prayer, quiet time, and Sunday Mass. Then fill in the blanks. 2. Establish a Spiritual Rhythm For centuries, monks and nuns have regulated their lives according to the hours of the day and a careful measurement of time. The sounding of church bells at regular hours established a predictable pattern and pace of prayer, work, and communal activities. To develop a spiritual rhythm in your life, consider marking time. Set an alarm on your smartphone to remind you to stop and pray at certain times of the day. Give pride of place to morning and evening by waking with gratitude and examining your day before going to bed. Whatever you do, make it a habit. 3. Choose One Spiritual Activity The desire to achieve spiritual perfection can thwart even the best laid plans. Know your limits. Trying to do too much actually can result in spiritual laziness, called acedia, or even paralysis. While dabbling in and switching up a wellestablished routine of pious practices can reinvigorate a tired spirituality, it s usually best to adhere to just a few activities. Devotional prayers like the rosary, journaling, walking in nature, daily Mass, adoration, and spiritual reading all are good candidates. Start by choosing just one and sticking to it every day. 4. Make Sundays Matter Liturgy is both the source of our spiritual growth and the summit towards which our daily religious habits are directed (Sacrosanctum Concilium n. 10, 14). Sundays therefore should be the high point of the week. A spiritual life without Sunday Mass will wither and die, just as Sunday Mass without a private spiritual life will always seem hollow and pointless. Cap off the week by making Sundays matter. Every time. Start your spiritual infrastructure today and then get ready for your bold move. Fr. Roger Gustafson

3 The Good News Discipleship Step: Boldly Moving Into Deeper Prayer The people of Saint Brendan are moving into the Easter season with a new message series called Bold Moves. Each week, we ll highlight a different step you can take to prepare for the bold move God wants you to make. Bold moves are not reckless changes, but courageous steps taken in faith that come from prudent judgment. Creating what Father Roger calls a spiritual infrastructure opens space for the Holy Spirit to guide us. Prayer is a key component. In this year of prayer called, Pray Together Stay Together, here are three basic steps you can take to deepen your prayer life. 1. Pray Alone in Style. In his famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells his disciples to pray privately. Go to your inner room, he says, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret (Matthew 6:6). Daily individual prayer therefore is the backbone of the Christian life. Many Catholics are not aware of the rich spiritual tradition of prayer in our Church, said Director of Faith Formation, Manolito Jaldon. There are literally hundreds of prayer styles offered in our 2,000 year history. Saint Brendan parishioners have been learning about many of those styles through various bulletin articles and monthly speakers. We re going to compile a small booklet of the bulletin articles at the end of the year, Father Roger said. In addition, audio recordings of our monthly speakers are available on the parish website. For wisdom in your bold move, learn about one prayer style and pray it daily. 2. Pray in Small Groups. Get out of your shell and pray with others. Prayer is central in the fifteen small groups offered by Saint Brendan. Random Acts of Catholics, for example, focuses on prayer leading into acts of service. Each gathering has a volunteer prayer leader, promoting a refreshing variation in exposure to several prayer types, said young adult member Mitch Carey. The Outdoor Walking Group uses Matthew Kelly s Prayer Process to reflect on six themes of Gratitude, Awareness, Peace, Freedom, and Significant Moments. Members of our Marian small groups share with each other how the Mysteries of the Rosary guide their faith, prayer, and daily lives and seek to increase their trust in God as they discuss personal stories of difficulties, challenges, and joy through the example of Mary. get connected. 3. Pray Intentionally at Mass. Join a small group today and dive into deeper prayer. Explore our website to Prayer alone and in small groups reaches its highest point at Sunday Mass. Prepare for what Pope Benedict XVI called the greatest and highest act of prayer by reading the gospel passage and spending some time in quiet meditation before Mass. Review what you ve written in your Mass Journal on past weeks, bring your journal to Mass, and be amazed at how God inspires you to make a great, bold move.

4 The Good News Prayer In The Tradition Of Henri Nouwen By Lisa Rosenlund, Saint Brendan Parish Manager Each week, we summarize a specific style, form, or approach to prayer, using the highly-acclaimed book by Robert J. Wicks, Prayer in the Catholic Tradition: A Handbook of Practical Approaches (Franciscan Media 2006). Part Four of Wicks book is entitled Praying with Classic and Contemporary Spiritual Guides. In this article, you ll learn more about prayer in the tradition of Henri Nouen. Henri Nouwen ( ), a Dutch Catholic priest, is among the most prolific and revered spiritual writers in the Christian tradition. His work has touched thousands of people around the world. Nouwen lived much of his life as an academic at Notre Dame, Yale and Harvard. Despite his incredibly powerful intellect, Nouwen wrote about prayer and the spiritual life in simple, direct language. Undoubtedly, Nouwen strove to make his works accessible to everyone, but he also wrote this way because he believed that true spiritual connection is always made from the heart, not from the head. In his books on prayer and spirituality, Nouwen does not advise the reader to follow any particular prayer method or practice. Rather, he acknowledges that many methods of prayer can facilitate the kind of intimacy with God that is the goal of spiritual life and, in fact, he explored several methods of prayer himself. Nouwen does recommend, however, that whatever approach we take, it should include reading of scripture, quiet time or silence, and the companionship of a spiritual guide or community. Nouwen was convinced that each of us is called to appreciate our individual belovedness. He used to joke that his middle initials, J. M., stood for just me, and he prayed as a person who struggled, as all of us do, to become the person he felt God was calling him to be. Praying with Nouwen means going on a journey. He often uses metaphors of motion such as from here to there and from this to that. Our journey toward God begins wherever we are right now, with a deep and honest look at our own lives, so that the person we bring to God is our whole self, not a mask or a disguise constructed by fear. In Can You Drink the Cup, he writes, We are tempted to say: Let s just live life. All this thinking about it only makes things harder. Still, we intuitively know that without looking at life critically we lose our vision and our direction. (388) Selfexamination is not the same as prayer, but it can lead us into prayer when we bring our inner life to God. Nouwen notes that when we focus too much on the concrete details of any prayer technique, we can convince ourselves that we can reach any level of prayer by just hard work and perseverance. (391) However, prayer is not about making our weaknesses disappear so that we can be transformed into perfect people. It is about allowing our failings to be held in the all-embracing arms of the one who loved us before we were born and trusting in his power to make us living witnesses to his love.

5 Stewardship Stewardship is the grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives God s gifts and shares them generously in love of God and neighbor. Stewardship is not about money or fundraising. It is a spirituality. It is a way of life. A steward recognizes that God is the source of all life and every blessing and that all gifts of time, talent, and treasure come from God. A steward is grateful for those gifts. A steward takes care of and increases those gifts and freely gives back the first and best portion of those gifts to God. The apostles were arrested after healing a disabled man. Peter boldly proclaimed in the second reading today that their power to perform the act had come from Jesus Christ the Nazorean whom the authorities had crucified but was raised and now had become the cornerstone. Fearful of the crowds, they released the apostles with a warning. The story illustrates the growing tension between the people and the ruling class. While the erstwhile leaders of the Jews desperately clung to power by trying to blot out the name of Jesus, a multitude of people, about 5,000, already had come to believe in Jesus, making the apostles the de facto leaders of Israel. In contrast to prevailing models of leadership, however, Jesus had instructed his disciples that they should not lord power over others. Whoever wishes to be great among you, he said, shall be your servant (Matthew 20:25-27). Indeed, a good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11). Unlike the hired man who works for pay and has no concern for the sheep, the good shepherd is selfless and courageous and seeks their best interests. I suppose Christ gave us this model of leadership because he knew how frequently power would be abused and become a source of scandal in his Church. Most of us hold some measure of power and influence over others. Whether you are a parent, teacher, supervisor, older sibling, landlord, or pastor, the proper stewardship of power recognizes that all power in heaven and earth has been given to Christ alone (Matthew 28:18) and that our power is merely derivative. In all your relationships, therefore, shepherd rightly according to the example of Christ himself.
