Let us love one another as Jesus loves us. Jesus said, You are my friends if you follow this commandment to love one another. May we be a community where this kind of love lives and grows. Jesus said, I have called you to bear the fruit of love. Help us to be fruitful, productive people who abide in your love and share that love with others. (By Rev. Dan Schifeling, Based on John 15) The Opening Prayer (In Unison) God we thank you for the gift of Your love, and for the gift of human love. We love because You first loved us. Heal those places within us that keep us from giving of ourselves in love. Lead us to love without conditions or limits. And as we worship You this day, fill us with the Holy Spirit so that we might love you, one another, and the whole world deeply and truly, just as You love us. Amen. The New Testament Lesson: 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

2 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. The Gospel Lesson: John 12: 1-8 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 Why wasn t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year s wages. 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Leave her alone, Jesus replied. It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me. 4 If you are looking for something to do on Monday nights this winter, why not try playing darts for Trinity? The Trinity dart-ball team is looking for some new players for the season. Last year s team finished 2 nd in the post-season tournament and finished 4 th in the regular season. Games are every Monday night at 7:30 (usually ending at about 9:30) starting October 6 th and running through March. We will hopefully be having a practice Monday night September 22 nd and 29th at 7, so stop by the dart-ball room (the old youth room) in the basement and give it a try. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Andrew Janes ( ) or Dave Avery ( ). There will be a Safe Sanctuary class for everyone in the church who works with the children and youth of the church on Sunday, October 12 th, after the second service. We will meet in the fellowship hall for a lunch and training. The class takes about two hours. Please sign up on the sheet on the wood table at the back of the overflow room so we know how many will be attending. Thank you for your time. The deadline for the November Tell will be moved up to October 13 th. Due to a larger than normal number of mailings that need to be prepared in October, we need to create the Tell sooner than usual. Project Connect of Wood County needs volunteers for a one-day event at St. Mark s Lutheran on Wednesday, October 15 from 9a-3p. Event providers will offer free hot meals, haircuts, dental care, housing assistance and much more to those who need it. Volunteers will serve primarily as hosts to guide guests through the event.
