1 October2018 A Note from Your Pastor What are you going to be for Halloween? I can remember being asked that ques on as a kid over and over, every October. Now a days it seems like people start asking that when school starts. When our kids were young there was a big parade in the school. Some mes that meant you were able to be two things for Halloween, one for the school day and another to trick or treat at night, which also ended with a parade and costume judging in the gymnasium of the school. (A great thing to know is that it is okay in a small community to turn off your lights and not have the doorbell rung over and over by trick-or-treaters.) As a child, I fantasized about being a superhero and saving the world or at least my part of it. I fantasized about being a firefighter and medic like Johnny Gage and Roy DeSoto*. I fantasized about being a great athlete and going to the Olympics. Honestly, I never really fantasized about being a pastor, about impac ng lives on an eternal scale, about being with people in their difficult mes and some of their most joyous mes. In fact, being a son of a pastor, I was posi ve that was not what I would be doing. AND I would never have asked to dress up like a pastor on Halloween, like Michael did when he was four! Michael saw something bigger than wan ng to be in a costume, he wanted (Continued on page 7) *Johnny Gage was portrayed by actor Randolph Mantooth in Squad 51. Roy DeSoto was portrayed by actor Kevin Tighe. Squad 51 followed the adventures of the 2 paramedics in the 1970 s television show. 3 Page 3 World Mission Offering 2018 But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it useful again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as useless. (Ma hew 5:13) YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH is the theme for the World Mission Offering From Interna onal Ministries (IM) World Mission Offering resources: Every September and October, congrega ons come together for a me of awareness, advocacy and ac on for global mission. Churches across the country celebrate and support the ministries that God is using to transform the world. This is the World Mission Offering. For the 2018 World Mission Offering, we are highligh ng the Ministry Priori es of Health and Wellness, Abolishing Global Slavery and Economic and Community Development. While these represent only a frac on of IM s ministries, they provide a window into what God is doing worldwide through out 120 global servants, 900+ volunteers, 43 home staff and 240+ global partners. During the month of October, envelopes will be available in the pews for you to make a dona on to the World Mission Offering. Each week you will meet missionaries and global consultants involved with Interna onal Ministries through bulle n inserts. You are encouraged to read these inserts and become familiar with those who are ministering throughout the world. Our goal for this offering is $1, which can easily be met and exceeded. Why is it important to give to the World Mission Offering? As the body of Christ, we are in partnership with those in the field, those in the home office, those in the local churches, and individual donors. When each area contributes, no one group carries the full burden of expense. IM does not ask global servants to raise all the funding that they need, but comes alongside them in financial support as well as ministry. Please make checks payable to First Bap st Manlius with WMO noted in the memo sec on. These checks can be placed in the offering plate each Sunday morning. From the Associate Execu ve Director for Global Mission, Rev. Jim Bell: We invite you to join Interna onal Ministries in passing the salt, not only around the table, but around the globe. Through your encouragement, your prayers, and your gi s to the World Mission Offering, you enable IM s global servants, volunteers, and interna onal partners to share the good news of Jesus in word and in deed. Grace and Peace, Your Mission Team

It is going to be an AMAZING me as we dive into our theme: Thrive. At our core, don t we all want to thrive in our daily lives? As believers we seek to love God and live as disciples of Christ. So this year we are focusing on Thrive because God is good, you are important, and life has meaning even when things don t look good The Bible tells us that God loves us that God is good -that God works all things to good that God s plans for us are good But what about when life isn t good? Thrive is about finding: Iden ty in God who never changes; Purpose in confusing mes; Home when life is filled with darkness; Joy no ma er what happens. That is the heart of what our weekend is about. It is going to be an amazing weekend, and we will have a ton of fun. We re going to have good food, crazy ac vi es, a solid mission project to support, powerful worship, challenging messages, and small group discussions. What we need though...is you! Come out and join us for this powerful, life-changing, Spritled weekend. Speaker: Jillene Narraway : Signs on Earth

7 Page 7 (Continued from page 1) FM Food Pantry News FM Community Outreach has a new website: The organiza on has also updated its Facebook page. From Linda Napier August 21, 2018 Dear First Bap st Church, Thank you for your dona on in June, 2018, your food dona ons each month, and for star ng Grace. Your incredible support helps us help others in our town. Food insecurity is closely linked to many chronic health problems, crea ng a cycle of inadequate access to healthy food and chronic disease that works to perpetuate itself over me. According to a Feeding America and Hunger and Health Survey concerning food-insecure households: 58% have at least one member with high blood pressure; 33% have at least one member with diabetes; 83% cope with insecurity in part by purchasing less expensive and less healthy food Lack of nutri on combines with stress resul ng from food insecurity to increase the likelihood of suffering from many chronic illnesses. Hunger is very real in the FM school district. We try our best to provide healthy food choices, including fresh and frozen produce, lean meats, and healthy recipes. In 2017, we distributed about 40,000 meals to our hungry neighbors. Each month we distribute an average of 1,700 cans of fruit 1,600 cans of vegetables 700 rolls of toilet paper, and much more! Thank you for your con nued support and generosity. people to be changed by Jesus. The irony is that he is doing my childhood fantasy as an adult and I am doing his. So, why all this reminiscing? What is your fantasy? Not what character you want to be for Halloween, but who do you want to be in the Kingdom of God the only place that really ma ers. 3 John 1:11 says, Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God. And Hebrews 6:9-12 says, 9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of be er things in your case the things that have to do with salva on. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and con nue to help them. 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and pa ence inherit what has been promised. We should imitate the great men and women of faith. We should fantasize about being a superhero in the Church. What do you want to be in the Kingdom of God? As we grow in our faith, and we are faithful in the small daily and even mundane work of the ministry God has called us to, we grow into a people who can become great in the Kingdom. So, I don t care what you want to be for Halloween. But really, what do you want to be in the Kingdom of God? Imitate that, un l the faith and work of your life become what God has placed in your heart and desires to be!
