1 February 2011 Episcopal Church of the Resurrection 3025 Hilyard St. Eugene, OR Mission Statement The mission of the Church of the Resurrection is to invite all people to unity with God and each other. We pursue our mission as we pray and worship, proclaim the Gospel, and promote justice, peace and love. Vision Statement The Church of the Resurrection exists to spread God s love into the world through teaching and action consonant with the traditions of the Episcopal Church. We envision a world in which baptismal vows are made real by the expression of these core values: We welcome all to join us in worship and ministry We respect the dignity and unique gifts of every human being We seek and serve Christ in all people, loving our neighbors as ourselves We desire to grow as a community of God s people by reaching out to others We strive for justice and peace among all people We desire to be active in the world as witnesses of God s love We pledge ourselves to compassion and service, supporting one another in local, national, and international ministries Annual meeting held Jan. 23 Jerry Jacobson takes over as Sr. Warden, as outgoing Vestry members Sandi Orbell and Kay Sogge received applause from COR members who attended the Annual Meeting. David Beuerman and Nick Crump were elected to the Vestry, along with Kevin May, who was re elected after serving one year as an appointed member. Elected as delegates to the Diocesan Convention were Jerry Jacobson, Sandi Orbell and Helen Reed, with Chet Kasmarski and Bruce Sedgwick elected to serve as alternates. Following discussion, the budget for 2011 was adopted as presented, and a round of applause went to Betsy Smith, who retired as COR treasurer. Ty Zeller is taking over as new treasurer. Staff, committee and reports on 2010 budget activity are available, as are reports on pledges and the budget for Updates on Tommy Braveheart Tommy Braveheart (also known as Tommy Garrison) is recovering following surgery in Portland. 3 Notes from the Loft Choristers The Choristers, in February, are preparing for a visit to Temple Beth Israel, our second visit there and another opportunity to sing in Hebrew. Our experience last year was such a hit, we have decided to make it a tradition. The simple round "Hashivenu" is a lamentation expressing a deep desire for return or "turning". Hasivenu Adonai elecha, venashuva chadesh yamenu kekedem. Lamentations 5:21 (Return us O God, to you, and we shall return renewed as in days of old). May we find a moment of renewal this month, of turning til we come round right". For more details regarding the visit to Temple Beth Israel, contact Carrie Peil Warner. Folk Mass February is Black History month. The music chosen for February 20 will reflect on the rich musical contributions of our African American brothers and sisters. COR Choir Both choirs are preparing special music for Mo. Tasha s last Sunday, February 6. She has shared many ideas, musically, in her time with us. It has been a pleasure to plan with Mo. Tasha and to use her musical talents to inspire our music ministry. With the extended time of Epiphany it gives the choir a chance to explore a variety of music before launching into Lent. We will use this time to start rehearsing Pergolesi s Stabat Mater which we will perform with the choir from First Christian. There will be two performances, one at each church (Palm Sunday at Resurrection and Good Friday at First Christian). There will be more about this in the next Tune In. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord! The Music Team CFA Offers Full Schedule for February Christian Education/Formation has a full schedule for February: February 6 The Church and Civil Rights: presenter Gil Avery will talk about the Church and its role in the Civil Rights movement, with added personal perspectives of someone who was an activist priest involved in the sweeping changes of these momentous times. February 13 Religion and Science with David Beuerman, PhD., Professor Emeritus of State University of New York. Dr. Beuerman taught science and mathematics for many years and also has an MA in Theology. February 20, 27, March 6 Buddhism and Christianity: Marcia Shankman will show portions of a DVD recording of the evening discussion between Mo. Tasha and Buddhist priest EJo on the first two Sundays, with the third reserved for questions & answers and 4 Christian Education/Formation for Adults meets in the Yellow Room from 9:30 to 10:15 AM every Sunday (except Jan 23 and 30) and discusses issues from a liturgical viewpoint. An optional breakfast is served at 9 AM. Come and join in; feel welcome to get a cup of coffee during the session. Join the Lunch Bunch! Lunch Bunch meets every Tuesday at 11:30 AM. Sometimes but not always we talk about church events. We always enjoy good food and fellowship. 5 Puppet Troupe Prepares for First Production Many Hands, COR s puppet troupe, will be introduced in song at the Jan. 30 th 10:30 service. It then takes on the task of putting together its first production. The troupe continues to meet every second Sunday at 9:30 AM in the Parish Hall at COR. We will decide on the story to tell in our first production and begin to develop a script. Then the next task will be to think about the cast of puppets needed and how to construct them, then proceed with all the work involved in producing a show. Many Hands is an intergenerational group and anyone interested in joining is welcome. Come to contribute skills and have fun with us as we learn how to use this art form to tell the gospel story.
