3 UNCONSCIOUSLY TRAPPED American author Sara Grant once wrote, Yeah, as long as we know we re trapped, we still have a chance to escape. The implication here is that sometimes we may not realize that we are trapped trapped in a dysfunctional relationship, a multi-generational cycle of poverty, a downward spiral of addiction, or a fearinfested false identity. Our traps may come as internal, emotional, mental or spiritual snares. Or they may be externally imposed by social, political, or economic forces. In either case, realization of a trapped status marks the first step in escape from it. A statement, erroneously attributed to that great liberator of antebellum slaves, Harriet Tubman, reveals the essence of this truth: I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves. This idea suggests that each of us should take periodic inventory of our situations to ascertain whether we currently reside in a state of servitude because some forms are more subtle, and hence harder to detect, than others. Through careful contextual analysis of our condition, we may arrive at the conclusion that an oppressive power has held us captive and thereby limited our God-given potential. After coming to grips with the existence and nature of our bondage, we can then seek ways to overthrow the oppression, opening the door to new and marvelous possibilities. Most highly, I recommend that we adopt a method of escape that begins with sincere prayer to the gracious God, who caringly liberates us from our sundry traps. Such prayer might reflect the thought and mood of the author of Psalm 142, who wrote: In the path where I walk, they have hidden a trap for me. I cry to you, O Lord. Give heed to my cry, for I am brought very low. Save me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me. Bring me out of prison, so that I may give thanks to your name. Engaging in this sort of human-divine exchange awakens in the supplicant or petitioner the natural longing for freedom that inherent craving for emancipation from the enslavement that renders us less than human. Furthermore, it provides the will, strength and courage to consistently struggle against the various forces that hold us captive, for we, then, realize that those forces, as ominous as they may have seemed upon initial discovery, pale in comparison to the glorious and delivering God.
