1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Covington, TN August 29, 2018 A Bi-Monthly Publication Placing a Priority on Children Beginning Sunday, September 9th & the next 6 Sundays, Pastor Dan will be leading a Sunday School discussion group targeted specifically for parents of young children! The class will meet at 9:45 AM in classroom A304 (upstairs back, right corner). The discussion will be based on Seven Things John Wesley Expected Us to do for Kids by Christopher Miles Ritter. It is our hope and prayer that this group will provide support to one another as these young families navigate this very busy, sometimes overwhelming phase of life. We ll be planning a kidfriendly Christmas party for the holidays and other gettogethers. Please mention this new group to anyone you know who might fall into this category. 2 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9 I have for most of my life-- been apolitical. It s not that I don t care about national politics, it s just that I always find ways to busy myself with things going on closer to home. As a preacher, I also know that I can quickly alienate a substantial part of the congregation if I start oversharing my own political views and biases. It just has always seemed best to let the gospel speak for itself and let folks decide whether the gospel has political implications. So, I offer this piece not as political commentary but as a tribute to a man who gave his life in public service. Our nation learned that John McCain died Saturday after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer. Across our nation, flags will fly at half-mast in his honor. He will be remembered well as his memorial services will be spread out over five days in three different cities including a worship service in the National Cathedral and a private service at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. McCain was eighty-one years old and had served more than thirty years as the Republican senator from Arizona. He was a presidential candidate twice. He distinguished himself by serving twenty years in the U.S. Navy during which time he was held captive in the Hanoi Hilton prison camp and endured all manner of torture and beatings for his country. By all accounts, he was a man of courage and valor. Yet, here s where John McCain made his deepest impression on us. At a campaign rally for the presidency in Minnesota in late 2008, McCain took a question from an unidentified woman who began to express her negative views toward his opponent, then Senator Barack Obama. Her remarks borne of fear and anxiety--went to the issue of Obama s birthplace and religion. She termed the Senator an Arab and paused for McCain s reply. Politely, he took the microphone from her, shook his head and did the unthinkable. He began to defend his opponent: No, ma am. He s a decent family man, a citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that s what this campaign is all about. Senator John McCain That moment indicated to me that John McCain truly embraced and lived the Christian gospel. He understood the notion of grace. He desired truth even when it might cost him personally. May we, as Christians, follow his example. In Christ s service, --Pastor Dan 2

5 The church is seeking a nursery worker! The hours for this position are Sunday mornings from 8:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and Wednesday evenings from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age. Please contact Liz Newman at ewnewman2@gmail.com or call United Methodist Women will host their fall program Tuesday, September 11 th at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Theresa Jennings will be the guest speaker. She is a survivor of the adoption scandal involving Georgia Tann and the infamous Tennessee Children s Home Society. A light dinner will be served with donations accepted. Please make reservations by calling the church office by September 10 th. Cindy Pease, Christian Counselor, will offer a grief support group beginning Monday, September 10 th at 6:30 p.m. in the GO classroom (lower level of the Sanctuary building). 5

As temperatures begin to drop, members of our community, who struggle to meet their everyday needs, will have the added challenge of providing winter coats for their families. More often than not, parents will choose to purchase coats for their children while the adults in the household do without. For this reason, adult size coats are the most sought after items in our Share the Warmth Coat Closet. Unlike children, adults have a tendency to wear a coat until it is no longer fit to donate, therefore, adult size coats; especially the larger sizes, are few and far between in the coat closet. As you re cleaning out closets preparing for the winter months, please remember the coat closet for any unwanted coats you happen to run across. Also, if you find a good deal while shopping please consider purchasing a coat or two and help Share the Warmth. 7
