P A S T O R Holly Tree Chapel, Holly Tree Chapel Newsletter September 2018 This fall, we are beginning three new studies of the Bible. Sunday mornings, I will preach on prophecy, and focus on the Book of Revelation. Wednesday evening, we are studying the Book of Romans. Our Women s Fellowship is beginning a study of Hebrews on September 11. It is our hope and prayer that you will take advantage of these opportunities to study the Word of God. As we begin these studies, it is important to understand Bible Study Principles: 1. Observation: what does the Bible passage say? a. What are the words? b. What is the context it is written in? Prose? Narrative? Apocalyptic? c. How does it fit in with the rest of Scripture? 2. Interpretation: what does the passage mean? a. Should we take the passage literally, as we would read a newspaper? The historical/grammatical/cultural interpretation is the way we approach Scripture at Holly Tree Chapel. Determine the specific historical situation surrounding the composition of the writing; and study intervening history to see whether or not the prophecy has been fulfilled. (Virkler, Hermeneutics, Principles and Processes of Biblical Interpretation, p. 206) b. Should we seek a deeper, spiritual meaning behind the words we read in Scripture. The answer is almost always, no. Although in the application stage, we should carefully apply the passage to our life situation. 3. Application: what does the passage mean to me? 4. Correlation: what do other sources say about the passage? Archaeology, theology, history, etc. 1

2 Let me mention the Book of Revelation as it relates to these principles. This Revelation comes from God. It is given to reveal the wonderful person of His Son, Jesus Christ. It is given to show or to make it known what will happen in the future. In the words show or "made it known" there is a subtle meaning. It is actually a Greek word which in nglish should be translated signified, or, if you want to pronounce it more accurately "sign-i-fied," i.e., make known by signs or symbols. God symbolized the future to His servant John. This is one of the first things we need to know about Revelation. It is a book largely of symbols. Symbols are important. They are ways of understanding what we cannot draw a picture of. Something that is rather difficult to understand can be made known by symbols. x: The late Dr. Ray Stedman wrote, I once heard of a boy who was trying to explain to a younger boy what a radio was like. He said to him, "You know that a telegraph is a long wire that runs between two cities. It is like having a big dog with his tail in Los Angeles and his head in San Francisco. If you step on his tail in Los Angeles he barks in San Francisco. Now a radio is the same thing only you don't have no dog!" That is a wonderful way of making clear---with the use of symbols--- what is difficult to understand. The book of Revelation is like that. x: 100 years ago, if you told your grandmother that you were able to cook without fire, she would have laughed at you! The modern electric range has no fire, and no smoke (well, usually not). 50 years ago, if you told your grandmother that you were able to cook without fire and without heat, she would have laughed at you and told you to go jump in the creek. But we now have the microwave oven, which uses neither fire nor heat. How could the Apostle John describe a helicopter, a tank, or an airplane 2000 years ago? How could he have communicated what he saw except in symbols? Please join us for these studies this fall. 4 W O M N S F L L O W S H I P Benevolence Shortfall One of our ministries to other people happens through the distribution of Benevolence funds. The 2018 Benevolence budget was approved for $5,500 each quarter. The first quarter s disbursements needed to be reduced to $4,300. The second quarters disbursements needed to be reduced to $1,000. Our current funding will not support a disbursement in the 3 rd quarter unless donations are given specifically to the Benevolence Fund. Please consider an extra gift to this fund so that the ministry may continue to operate. 4

5 As we move our focus toward Fall, we would like to wish each of you a blessed summer with family and friends and a very special reminder of the hope we have in Jesus Christ. God's indescribable, free gift of everlasting life has been given to anyone who believed in Jesus Christ. Ministry Update: Thank you all--your prayers and financial partnership makes Project Africa possible--the progression being made with the partnership of RMBC and B World--God is Faithful. YOUR PARTNRSHIP IN ACTION B N V O L N C I was so blessed to minister with and among these sixteen men from different parts of Africa: (7) Uganda, 2) South Africa, (4) Malawi, (1) Kenya, (1) Democratic Republic of Congo, (1) Rwanda and a few of them minister in Zambia as well as Mozambique. 5
