Welcome to the Confirmation preparation year! We hope that you will participate fully in preparation for Confirmation, and become strong Christian leaders in our community. We invite you to learn about the power of the Holy Spirit and see what difference the Sacrament of Confirmation can make in your personal life. God has great hopes for you (Jeremiah 29:11), and we do, too! Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more living familiarity with the Holy Spirit his actions, his gifts, and his biddings in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1309) A small faith community is a group of 5-10 youth who meet intentionally and regularly, together with adult mentors, to share life, deepen their faith, and actively live out the mission of the Church. Growing Teen Disciples, by Frank Mercandante, St. Mary s Press,

Parents Level 1 and 2 Confirmation Preparation begins in the family Parents are the primary educators of their children, especially in their life of faith. Much of this education takes place in their loving example, exhibited in their relationship to their spouse, to their children, to friends, and to God. In Renewing the Vision : A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry, the US Bishops state: We believe that family life is sacred because family relationships confirm and deepen family members union with God and allow God s Spirit to work through them. The Church encourages families with adolescents [to] engage in family faith conversations; to teach moral values; to develop healthy relationships and use good communication skills; to celebrate family rituals; to pray together; to participate in shared service activities; to explore and discuss vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life; and to nurture close parental relationships and parental faith. One of the most important tasks of the Church today is to promote the faith growth of families by encouraging families to share, celebrate, and live their faith at home and in the world. (RTV pg 11-12) In the spirit of partnership, listed below are commitments that we are promising to you, as well as commitments that we ask of all parents/families choosing to participate in Confirmation preparation. Parish Commitments Parent Commitments recognize and affirm you as the primary teacher of your son/daughter set the example for your son/daughter by actively living your faith provide a Catholic community to encourage and support you make the process of preparing for Confirmation a priority in the family calendar communicate with you about Confirmation preparation and listen to input and feedback connect you with other parents of teens provide resources (Parent Link newsletter, lending library in lower level lobby of Parish Center, Parenting video series) to strengthen and assist you in your parenting role provide opportunities for you to be involved in your son/daughter s preparation process partner with you in forming your son/daughter s faith and relationship with God and our Church discuss the material in the Candidate handbook and assist your son/daughter in completing homework assignments on time volunteer in one role within the Confirmation preparation program, as listed in the Parent Volunteer Options (mailed home in August - extra copies available in the office or online) participate in Mass as a family at least weekly partner with the parish in forming your son/ daughter s faith and relationship with God and our Church 4

Youth Expectations and Attendance Policy Students are expected to attend all scheduled Confirmation preparation activities. We all have full lives and busy schedules, however, an essential part of Confirmation preparation is to build friendships with other teens and grow together as disciples of Christ. The only way this can happen is if the candidates are present together for the scheduled preparation activities. While illness or unavoidable situations do arise from time to time, just as any team needs every player, your group needs you! While an occasional absence may be necessary, missing more than 20% would prevent successful completion of preparation. Preparation includes: Small Groups: (see pg. 2) 11 small group meetings per year Large Groups: (see pg. 8) Safe & Sacred Good Friday: Living Stations of the Cross (Level 1) Group Service Projects: Level 1: Donut Sunday (see pg 15-17) Level 2: House of Charity and Fish Fry Individual Service Projects: (see pg 20-22) project consisting of at least 10 hours/year e.g. Wild Game Feed, Living Stations Special Events: Level 2: Confirmation Rehearsal (see page 18) Retreats: (see pg 9 and 10) Level 1: 1-Day Retreat Level 2: Overnight Retreat Sponsor Support: (see pg 6-7) Sacraments: Sponsors and youth meet 2-3 times each year The foundation for Confirmation preparation: Confirmation preparation is a next step for those regularly celebrating their faith, who want to confirm the promises made at Baptism and grow as disciples. It is essential for families to attend Mass together weekly and to periodically receive God s love and forgiveness in Reconciliation. 5

Code of Conduct and Technology Policy Individuals participating in St. Timothy s sponsored activities agree to: Participate voluntarily, actively, and with respect for others, facilities, buildings, and others property Turn off cell phones, I pods, mp3 players, and handheld games during meeting time The following are not permitted: illegal substances, firearms. ammunition, explosives, and other weapons alcohol or tobacco for minors harassment, violence, or uncooperative behavior sexual innuendos or romantic displays of affection Sponsors Level 1 & 2 A sponsor assists the candidate by sharing his or her faith journey in a personal way and helping the candidate live as a true witness of Christ. Candidates may choose a Confirmation sponsor who is the same sponsor from their Baptism (Catholic Godparent) or another confirmed Catholic who has received Eucharist and is leading a life of faith. The sponsor cannot be a parent of the candidate. Besides attending the rite of Confirmation itself, the sponsor will meet with the candidate 2-3 times per year outside of the home sessions. Sponsors are invited to attend large group events with their candidate. Sponsor selection forms are due to the parish office no later than October 11. Extra forms are available in the office, on the website or by ing Margaret Kelly. Guardian Angels Level 2 The role of a Guardian Angel is to anonymously support a young person in the final year of preparation for Confirmation. The Guardian Angels spiritually walk with the candidates by praying for them, and encourages and supports them by writing a short note as often as they can. It might be a letter sharing their faith, a copy of a prayer, a seasonal card, or a scripture they would like to share. Informational forms are due from each Level 2 youth by September 20. Extra forms are available in the office or on the website., Some candidates will undoubtedly receive more mail than others will. Remember, this is not a contest to see which candidate receives the most mail. Some Guardian Angels will have more time and write more frequently. This does not diminish the value of all who participate in the program. While it is always fun to get a note, some angels may spend more time in prayer. Any benefit you receive is an added blessing. Guardian Angels and candidates are invited and encouraged to attend the Revelation Party. Guardian Angel Revelation is after the 8:30 Mass on Sunday, April 10th. 6

We are to reflect our loving relationship with God in our relationships with others. Unfortunately, many in our society today feel trapped by relationships that are abusive. Learn about how you can protect yourself, help a friend in need, and help to end the cycles of abuse in our world today. All must attend-archdiocesan requirement unless parent speaks to Nolan Gutierrez. Creating Safe and Sacred Places is a response to The Charter for the Protection of Children and Youth (United States Catholic Conference of Bishops). Vocations and Discernment Sunday, March 27, :30-8:00 pm in the church When many young people receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, they seem to disappear, not to be seen again until they want to get married in the Church. Why is this occurring? Is our faith Important? Is it so important that it should help lead us in our decision making or should we just go to our gut feeling. This night is set up so that we can see what God is calling us to and how to properly discern those call ings. Good Friday: Living Stations of the Cross Friday, March 25, :00 pm in the church If anyone wants to come with Me, he or she must put aside self-interest, then pick up their cross, and follow Me. 9

Individual Service Reflection James 2:26 says, For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. Our love of God should show in the way we live our lives and spend our time. You are asked to complete an individual service project, of a minimum of 10 hours. The goal is not simply to log in hours. There are two purposes: 1. To positively impact the world around you in the love of God, and 2. To reflect on your experience and grow from it 7 key themes of Catholic Social Teaching Life and Dignity of the Human Person The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. This belief is the foundation of all the principles of our social teaching. In our society, human life is under direct attack from abortion and euthanasia. The value of human life is being threatened by cloning, embryonic stem cell research, and the use of the death penalty. Catholic teaching also calls on us to work to avoid war. Nations must protect the right to life by finding increasingly effective ways to prevent conflicts and resolve them by peaceful means. We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person. Project Ideas: volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center, visit a nursing home, write to Congress against the death penalty. Call to Family, Community, and Participation The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society in economics and politics, in law and policy directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and the family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. Project Ideas: baby-sit for free to give a married couple a date night, organize a block party, participate in Parish Council or YAC Rights and Responsibilities The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met. Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities--to one another, to our families, and to the larger society. Project Ideas: volunteer at the library, help with a Get-Out-the-Vote effort Option for the Poor and Vulnerable A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions between rich and poor our tradition recalls the story of the Last Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. Project Ideas: sort food at CEAP or St. Tims, wrap and organize food and gifts for the Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets Volunteer at Feed My Starving Children The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God s creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected--the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative. Project Ideas: tutor a student who is struggling in an area you are skilled in Solidarity We are one human family whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, & ideological differences. We are our brothers & sisters keepers, wherever they may be. Loving our neighbor has global dimensions in a shrinking world. At the core of the virtue of solidarity is the pursuit of justice and peace. Pope Paul VI taught that if you want peace, work for justice. The Gospel calls us to be peacemakers. Our love for all our sisters &brothers demands that we promote peace in a world surrounded by violence & conflict. Project Ideas: attend a mission trip, learn about the meaning of fair-trade, participate in Night of WOH, Food Fast. Care for God s Creation We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God s creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored. Project Ideas: volunteer at an animal shelter, Adopt-a-highway, carve pumpkins to help Springbrook Nature Center s fall fest 20

Individual Service Report Level 1 and 2 DUE: by March 2nd to the office (complete the questions below and on reverse, or give a typed response to the same questions if you prefer) Name: Level: 1 or 2 (circle) Group Number: Time Spent: hours Date(s) of Service: Place of Service: Service Recipient or Supervisor Signature: Description of my project (see project ideas on pg. 20): I chose this project because What did I learn about God? Jesus said, What ever you do unto the least of these, you do to me. How did I experience God through this project? 21

What did I learn: about myself, my attitudes, about service Who am I? What are my values? How will this alter my future behaviors/attitudes/and/or career? Have my motivations for volunteering changed? In what ways? What makes for a good volunteer? 22

Prayer for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit Christ Jesus, before ascending into heaven, You promised to send the Holy Spirit to Your apostles and disciples. Grant that the same Spirit may perfect in our lives the work of Your grace and love. Grant us the Spirit of Fear Of The Lord that we may be filled with a loving reverence toward You. the Spirit of Piety that we may find peace and fulfillment in the service of God while serving others; the Spirit of Fortitude that we may bear our cross with You and, with courage, overcome the obstacles that interfere with our salvation; the Spirit of Knowledge that we may know You and know ourselves and grow in holiness; the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten our minds with the light of Your truth; the Spirit of Counsel that we may choose the surest way of doing Your will, seeking first the Kingdom; Grant us the Spirit of Wisdom that we may aspire to the things that last forever; Teach us to be Your faithful disciples and animate us in every way with Your Spirit.
