1 Adolescent Confirmation Preparation Candidate and Parent Handbook St. Edith Stein Catholic Church 3311 North Fry Rd / Katy, TX / Confirmation is the final Sacrament of Initiation in which the confirmed are sealed with the Holy Spirit and are drawn fully into active participation in the life of the church. At St. Edith Stein, our adolescent Confirmation program will prepare you to receive the Sacrament and assist you in becoming full active participants in the community. 3 Eligibility for Confirmation Preparation Be a baptized Catholic who has received first communion Be at least a Junior in high school and at least 15 years old Must have attended one year of faith formation classes or catholic school o If you don't have one year of faith formation classes or catholic school you must attend weekly faith formation classes or be enrolled in catholic school Family must be a registered member of St. Edith Stein parish Registration for Confirmation Preparation Completing the necessary paperwork o Adolescent Confirmation Registration Form o Copy of your Baptismal Certificate o Payment of $160 Attendance Required for Confirmation Confirmation Classes o If you are more than 15 min. late it will count as an absence o Candidates can only miss 3 classes without penalty o If Candidates miss 5 confirmation classes they will be automatically withdrawn from classes and will not be confirmed. 2 Retreats (one is overnight) Confirmation Rehearsal Confirmation Mass Classes Catechists will lead a class on the core teachings of Confirmation. These classes will give the Candidates a firm understanding of Confirmation and will prepare them to receive the Sacrament. Retreats All Confirmation candidates are required to attend 2 retreats; 1 being a day retreat at St. Edith Stein and 1 being a weekend retreat with the Confirmation Class. If a candidate is unable to attend the overnight retreat scheduled for St. Edith Stein, the candidate is responsible for attending another confirmation retreat with another parish. If a candidate is unable to attend the day retreat a makeup will be given for them and their sponsor to complete at home. General Conduct Candidates should model Christian morals and values in their dress, speech, and actions. Candidates should be respectful of adult instructors and one another. Candidates should arrive on time for sessions and plan to stay for the entire session Candidates should participate fully in the sessions. Cell phones should be turned off Personal electronics and homework should be left at home. Confirmation Patron Saint At Confirmation, you will choose a patron saint a holy man or woman whose life you admire and would like to emulate. You will be taking this person s name when you are Confirmed. Choose a patron saint as you would choose a close friend someone you look up to, have something in common with, and feel comfortable talking to when you need assistance. You may choose to keep your baptismal saint or choose another saint at this time. Once you have chosen a patron saint, please answer the following questions in a 1 page Paper. 1. What saint have you chosen? When is his/her feast day? 2. What virtues (gifts) did this saint practice in his/her life? 3. How is this saint a model for you today? 3

4 Confirmation Sponsor Qualifications A Confirmation Sponsor must be: A Baptized and Confirmed Catholic At least 16 years old Must be in a valid marriage (if married) Someone other than the candidate s parent Living their faith and is willing to spend time sharing their faith with the candidate Someone that you admire and enjoy talking to. Confirmation Sponsor Responsibilities Candidates are responsible for sharing with their sponsors the following Requirements: Meet at least three times to go over the 3 sessions in the Confirmation Sponsor Guide with the candidate (Meetings may be in person, over the phone, via , or through other correspondence) The sponsor will need a Confirmation Sponsor Guide. (It can also be found on our website ( 1) You will then see the documents on the left side of the page. Be present at the Rite of Confirmation and Rehearsal (Parents must attend if sponsors are unable to do so.) Parish or Community Service Hours By our baptism, we are all called to use our different gifts to share in the mission of Jesus: in the Church there is diversity of ministry, but unity of mission. Confirmation is, if nothing else, our response to God s gracious call to follow Him. We follow Christ when we imitate his example by loving God above all else, and loving our neighbors as ourselves. As followers of Jesus, we believe that ministry is not something that we do rather, it is who we are. Candidates are asked to offer 30 hours of Service to St. Edith Stein Parish or the Community during their time of preparation. Candidates are responsible for keeping track of their hours. A Service Hours Log is included in this handbook. Either this log or a letter from their ministry leader confirming that they have completed the required number of service hours. Service to the Poor Project In addition to 30 Service Hours Candidates are responsible for completing 1 Service Project. St. Edith will provide some opportunities throughout the year. If the candidate knows of a service project that is not provided by St. Edith Stein and wants to take part in it please get approval from Chazz Sheffield before starting it. 4
