4 From our Assistant Pastor And Women s Ministry Advisor Dear Sisters in Christ, It is a wonderful day to be able to celebrate the unique gifts that our God has given to women. This year has been a different year for the women s ministry. It has not been business as usual, for together we are realizing that God s timing is not our timing and God s ways are higher than our ways. We have moved away from merely doing what we have always done, but instead, we have really waited on the Lord to guide and to instruct us. What may seem like a slow start this year is only going to benefit us in the long run for where and how the Lord will continue to use this Women s Ministry to bless others. As we focus on others I am a firm believer that God, in turn, will continue to bless us in immeasurable and insurmountable ways. We are thankful to our Minister of Music, Brother Rockefeller Twyman who helped open the way for us to welcome Ms. Mariah Maxwell as our guest choir director of music for the Women s Day choir this year! We are blessed to have Dr. Vanetta Rather back with us to bless us with her powerful and inspirational preaching. We are most excited about how the Lord has collectively spoken to us about celebrating each woman of Mt. Calvary this year. Some of you may never know how very much your presence, your smile, your encouragement and your authentic love of your fellow-sisters in Christ is appreciated. Each and every one of you is a blessing to this church and to the Body of Christ. Let us continue this journey of positive outreach; walking together to be more like Jesus and putting in our all for God. Let us continue to do what we know the Lord requires: to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God. (Micah 6:8) Let us continue to be watch women on the wall, praying through the unrest in our country and abroad, as we walk with God to help somebody along the way. The Women s Ministry of Mt. Calvary is walking with God and with those in prison, with the homeless, with the helpless, with the marginalized, with those who have been dehumanized and even demonized by oppressive forces. We are putting in our all for God without fear or reservation because we know the God can and God will. We are merely vessels through which our God is moving so that we can edify one another and glorify the Lord. Thank you, Women of Mt. Calvary, Sisters in Christ, for giving your love, your life and your all! All praises be to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords for our God is truly awesome and so are you! In Love and Solidarity, Dr. Lora F. Hargrove Assistant Pastor and Women s Ministry Advisor 4

5 From our Women s Ministry President Dear Sisters in Christ, Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! What a joy it is to gather together to worship on this very special day as we celebrate 2015 Women s Day. This year s theme is, Putting in My All for God! I am truly humbled and count it an honor to serve the women of Mt. Calvary. I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to work under the leadership of our remarkable Pastor, Rev. Leon Grant and our Assistant Pastor, Rev. Dr. Lora Hargrove. I m deeply grateful to the Women s Day Committee for their dedication in planning another beautiful, spirit filled Women s Day program. They truly epitomize our theme, Putting in My All for God! Today, ladies we celebrate you for what you have done, what you are doing, and by God s blessing, what you will do as women of Faith. I pray that God will equip each of you to seek His will, and that you continue to grow in grace, faith, and knowledge of Him. My continuous prayer is that God will be glorified and that women will be blessed through this year s planned activities as we seek Him, Putting in Our All for Him! May God bless you and give you His peace! Sincerely, Valencia Freeman President, Women s Ministry 5

10 Celebration of Giving Litany MINISTER: It is now time for us to share in giving. Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because all we have comes from God. According to Deuteronomy 8:18, it is God who gives us the power to get wealth. MINISTER: Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because God commands us. Malachi 3:10 states that we are to bring the full tithe into God s storehouse. MINISTER: Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because God said in Luke 6:38, to give and He would give back to us a more abundant blessing. MINISTER: Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because 2 Corinthians 9:7 states that God loves a cheerful giver. ALL: Thank you Lord, for the privilege of giving. We are excited about paying the tithe and giving the offering. We know that you are faithful to your promises. Therefore, we trust you in faith to do what you have said. AMEN! 10

12 Women s Day Litany Leader: Today, O Lord, we honor our women the carriers and cultivators of our culture. In a lush African garden, your hands fashioned her. We celebrate the strength, power, passion, beauty, courage, and faith of women across this world. Bless her now as she cultivates culture and Christ in future generations. People: We praise and thank you God, for women. Leader: We remember biblical queens like Miriam and Mary; Ruth and Rahab. We remember our African queens: Hatshepsut, Nefertiti, Makeda, Nzingha and Yaa Asantewa. Through their trials and tribulations they grew in wisdom and strength. Bless our queens of today who continue the legacy of educating and leading their people. People: Strengthen your women, O Lord. Their genius has enriched the earth. Leader: We give reverence to every woman, who, like the beautiful, thoughtful, and powerful women of scripture continue to defy odds and banish stereotypes; women who put in their all to love and to serve God in the face of oppression, sexism and tradition. We remember Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Pauli Murray and Rosa Parks. Bless all women, but especially women of color who fight against injustice through strategies of hope, love, faith, survival and advancement. People: Empower your women, O Lord. We thank you for the unselfish Spirit that lives in the soul of the every woman dedicated to God. Leader: We remember Augusta Savage, Zora Neal Hurston, Katherine Dunham, Marian Anderson and Mahalia Jackson. They birthed black literary and artistic traditions. Because of women like these, the once muffled voices of women everywhere ring clear with creative power. People: Inspire your women, O Lord. Their beauty has adorned the earth, just like the beauty of our ancestors; our grandmothers, our mothers, and our sisters in the faith. Leader: We celebrate the women of today. We celebrate the sharing of their gifts, talents, and skills. We celebrate their ability to manage the home and the office. We celebrate their ability to serve as a public official and a Sunday School teacher. We celebrate those who are required to be both the matriarch and the patriarch; those who are tough enough to fight for equality and wise enough to celebrate the tenderness in their own character. ALL: We remember Deborah, Zipporah, Jarena Lee, Julia Foote, and Zilpha Elaw. Black women prayed and preached, healed and helped, faithfully putting in their all for God, especially in times of trouble and distress. Their triumph has sparked fire in our souls. May the Light that radiates from you, O Lord, cast beautiful patterns on our lives and our witness. We rejoice with women everywhere. Thank you, Lord for the blessing of women in the earth! Amen. 15 MONTHLY FOCUS Acceptance: He Accepted Us First God accepts us as we are, with all of our faults and weaknesses. Being a Christian means accepting Christ as Lord and Savior and learning about Him through experiences and reading God s Word. Before we can have the privilege of accepting Him, we must understand that God, the father, has already accepted us. God, through his son Jesus Christ, accepts us despite our past, present, and future sins. He does this because He loves us. Period. In John 15:16, Jesus explains that He has chosen us. You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. (John 15:16, NKJV) Take time today to thank God for accepting you despite your sins. Thank Him for choosing you before you chose Him. If you haven t made Jesus your choice yet, then make that choice today. It will be the best decision you will ever make. God, we thank you for accepting us as we are. We thank you for looking past our faults and seeing our needs. We thank you most of all for loving us. Amen. 27 FROM THE EVANGELISM MINISTRY Focus on UNIVERSALISM According to Merriam-Webster s definition, UNIVERSALISM is a theological doctrine that all human beings will eventually be saved and endorses the principles and practices of a liberal Christian denomination founded in the 18th century originally to uphold belief in universal salvation and now united with Unitarianism. Unitarian Universalists (UU) promote that belief in the Bible is not required and the Bible reflects biases and cultural ideas from the times in which it was written and edited. Some, but not all, UU do not believe in God. Other UU beliefs include: 1) Jesus Christ was is an outstanding human being ; 2) denial of the divinity of Jesus Christ; 3) denial that the Holy Spirit is a person; 4) Christ s sacrifice was not a requirement for atonement of human sin; 5) heaven and hell are states of mind; 6) prayer is a spiritual or mental discipline; 7) equality of race, color, gender, and sexual orientation; and 8) human reason and experience ultimately determine spiritual truth. There are approximately 200,000 Unitarian Universalists and Unitarians acknowledged by the International Council of Unitarian and Universalists (ICUU). As with most religions, there are various UU sects within and without, with diverse beliefs. Notwithstanding, a small percentage of UUs consider themselves Biblical Unitarians and profess belief in the major tenets of Christianity. All Christians, when given the opportunity to witness to UUs (or any other religious group), should render a clear affirmation under the power of the Holy Spirit -- that there is only one way to obtain salvation, and that is through confessed belief in God s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Today s article contains excerpts or paraphrases from: and The Evangelism Ministry Meetings are open to all. The next meeting will be May 21, Please browse through the evangelism materials on the racks in the front vestibule and rear lobby of the Leon Grant Family Life Center. Feel free to take some for your use in sharing the Gospel. Please contact Deacon Mary for more information concerning this ministry.
