Mark Davidson Jimmie Hawkins, Pastor s 20 th Anniversary Celebration J. Mark Davidson COMMUNION Kay-Robert Volkwijn MANY WAYS TO PRAY You are cordially invited to join us for Wednesday Evening Prayer Reimagined, as we explore Many Ways to Pray. Join us the first Wednesday each month, from 7:00 to 7:45 (June 6). Each gathering will be unique, with time for silence, for intercession and for learning a new prayer practice. We meet in the new Chapel in the Sanctuary. Everyone is welcome: Come as you are, whenever you can. Facilitators: Carol Eckerman, Nancy Corson Carter, Mark Davidson, and Allison Davidson July 15 July 22 July 29 August 5 J. Mark Davidson Erik Johnson Rebecca Reyes J. Mark Davidson - COMMUNION August 12 J. Mark Davidson August 19 Jordan Haywood August 26 J. Mark Davidson KINGS BAY PLOWSHARES UPDATE Rec friend and neighbor Patrick O Neill, who has been jailed in Georgia since April 5, bonded out (5/24/18) to be reunited with Mary and their children at home in Garner under house arrest (with required ankle monitor). He and his six other Catholic nonviolent resisters are facing upward to 20 years and 6 months for acting on the call of the prophet Isaiah (2.4) to beat swords into plowshares.. Martha Hennessey and Carmen Trotta, too, have elected to post bond and return to NYC. All seven defendants express THANKS to Church of Reconciliation for prayers and cards sent their way over the past 7 weeks. Visit kingbayplowshares7.org for information their stories, Trident, and legal updates VACATION BIBLE CAMP It s time to register for Vacation Bible Camp, scheduled for the week of June 11 th to the 15 th! We ll be looking at how we can develop our own qualities of courage as children of God in today s world. The book of Daniel will be our primary resource. In addition to activities held on the church campus, we will go on two field trips. And having fun together as a camp community will be a given! The camp will run from 9:00 to 4:00 each day. Rising 1 st through 6 th graders are eligible to attend. The $100 registration fee covers the cost of lunch, snack, and all activities. Full and partial scholarships are available. Alex Gordon, a long-time professional educator (including several years as a camp director) and a member of the church s Ministries with Children and Youth Committee (MCY), will direct the camp. Adults and youth from the church will provide additional volunteer support. Registration packets are available in the narthex on Sundays and from the church office during the week. Please share them with neighbors, friends, and grandchildren. The camp is a wonderful way for us to share our Rec community with other families. Questions? Contact Alex ( / agordonnc@gmail.com).
3 REC PHOTO DIRECTORY COMING SOON! Like most congregations, the lives of those with whom we walk our faith journeys change over time. Often it is difficult to put a name to a face or vice-versa. That's when a photo directory is really handy to have around. The last such directory was done in 2012 and there have been lots of changes since then. The Deacons are organizing a Photo Directory -- BUT a current photo directory requires current photos. Ken Jens and Jordan Haywood are our skilled photographers this year and will be taking individual and family photos in the sanctuary immediately after worship each Sunday during the month of May -- May 6, May 13, May 20, and May 27. Official membership is not necessary to be included in the directory. If you see yourself as part of this community of faith, absolutely you should be included. Sign-up sheets will be in the narthex and/or the Fellowship Hall on each of these Sundays. There will be no specific time slots. Photos will be taken in the order the names appear on the sheets. In addition, you will be asked to complete a form providing current information that typically appears in our regular directory -- names of everyone in your household, street address, addresses, and phone numbers. We encourage you to include something specific about yourselves -- for example, when and why you chose The Rec, where you were before coming here, what you do professionally, any hobbies or special interests, etc. If you are not available on any of these Sundays, please chose something you already have and arrange to send it electronically to Ken or Jordan by contacting them directly: Ken Jens: , jensmilroy@gmail.com Jordan Haywood: , jordanhaywood@gmail.com PHOTOGRAPHS NEEDED The Marking 20 committee is looking for photographs for a slide show during Mark's 20th anniversary celebration on June 24th. Pictures do not necessarily have to include Mark or his family. We'd like lots of things showing the life of the Rec over the last 20 years. You can digital pictures to genejohnson@gfsw.com or churchrec@churchrec.org. Paper photos can be left with JoAnn or put in Gene's mailbox for scanning. Put you name on the back so we can return it. LISTENING PLACE SPIRITUAL CENTER (1803 Chapel Hill Rd, Durham) The Listening Place Spiritual Center is currently accepting applications for its two year training program in the art and ministry of spiritual direction which begins in late summer Classes meet ten hours per month (one Saturday, one Monday) for ten months each year. The program, which is ecumenical and rooted in Ignatian spirituality, is for those who are seeking to deepen their own spiritual experience. It also develops the skills needed to companion others on their spiritual journeys. Topics covered include the history of Christian spirituality, the mystics, prayer traditions and practices, discernment, use of the arts in spiritual direction, and guidelines for ethical conduct. A certificate is awarded upon the successful completion of the program. Application deadline is June 15, For more information contact Mary Grace McCoy, Director, at Website: listeningplacespiritualcenter.org 3

6 #MARKing20years! A Celebration! Please MARK your calendars for June 24 th to be here for worship and a special celebration that includes, you guessed it, a potluck! #MARKing20years! is a celebration of the 20 th anniversary of Rev. Mark Davidson s call to the Church of Reconciliation. Not only is this a meaningful milestone in Mark s ministry, it a celebration of the shared achievements from a covenant relationship with the Church of Reconciliation. We are naming it #MARKing20years! of ministry as a catchy way to capture the theme of celebrating this milestone and to inspire participation. We need your help with this by sharing memories, photos, suggestions, tweets, posts, and other digital or non-digital items using this hashtag. More on this later. We hope to have a timeline, special guests, old photos, poems, songs, art, and even a little humor. Rev. Jimmie Hawkins will be our guest preacher at worship on June 24 th. Then we will have a program followed by our classic potluck with some more entertainment. And, one more thing, this is not a retirement party! However, the items that we collect during this celebration will be used to create a meaningful gift for Mark. The #MARKing20years! Committee is made up of Mike Byerley, Courtney Chávez, Doris Murrell, Howard Carter, and Gene Johnson. Please see any of us for suggestions, questions, or to volunteer.
