1 Back to Sunday School 006 \ A Journal. November, 2018 ADVENT FESTIVITIES Sunday December 2 nd, first Sunday in Advent, brings two very special events to open the season. This year's chancel play, "The Radical Yes" will be presented during 11:00 am worship, with Stella Bowers singing the role of Mary and Evan Carlson portraying Archangel Gabriel. Our Butterfly Quillers will enact the Heavenly Host. Immediately following Worship, linger for AdventFest in Fellowship Hall. Our theme is "Narnia" and we'll have crafts, treats, and Charron Andrews' fabulous 'decorate a cookie' table... The following Sunday, December 9 th, brings us our annual Congregational Potluck right after church in Fellowship Hall. Immediately following lunch, we'll re-convene in the Sanctuary for our Christmas play, "Prayers from the Stable" enacted by the Disciples Class, with Symone Burt narrating, and Pastor Mark on the piano. The Disciples are already working on the set... See you there! Questions? Allison Davidson, storytreecastle@gmail.com. 2 2 ADULT EDUCATION SUNDAY SCHOOL This series of classes will explore the concept of Feminine Wisdom and Her place in Christian theology. While we are all familiar with the masculine and the Hero s Journey, we are less familiar with the feminine and what Her journey is about. Whether we say it is archetypal or a Call from the Holy Spirit, all we have to do is to look at our culture to know that She is trying to speak to us. What is She trying to say? Come join us as at 9:45 on Sunday mornings as we learn together and try to discern Her message for our times. November 4: For this class, we will focus on our female ancestors and their impact on our faith journeys. Did our female ancestors leave any unfinished business for us to take up in our lifetime? What can we learn about feminine wisdom from them? The Beatitude Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God serves as an anchor for this conversation. (Ann Loomis) November 11: In this class, we will take a look at how feminine wisdom is linked to the Earth. Drawing upon Thomas Berry s article The Spirituality of the Earth, we will explore the roots of feminine creativity and what this means for our well being. How has the Earth been left out of Christian theology, and how have our souls been affected by this? The Beatitude Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth is our anchoring guide for this discussion. (Ann Loomis and Sue Regier) November 18: This class will discuss ways to balance the masculine and feminine energies in our lives and in our spiritual practices. What would a partnership between the Divine Masculine and the Divine Feminine look like? Can we bring more of feminine wisdom into our worship service? For this discussion, we will draw on the Book of Proverbs as well as the image of the woman clothed with the sun from the Book of Revelation. (Ann Loomis and Shirley Brazda) The next Adult Ed Committee meeting will be November 8 at 6:30 in the Library. You are invited to join our meetings any time. Contact Bron Skinner ( ) for more information, or if you have ideas you want the Committee to consider for Adult Sunday School. MANY WAYS TO PRAY You are cordially invited to join us for Wednesday Evening Prayer Reimagined, as we explore Many Ways to Pray. Join us the first Wednesday of each month, from 7:00 to 7:45 (November 7 th ). Each gathering will be unique, with time for silence, for intercession and for learning a new prayer practice. We meet in the new Chapel in the Sanctuary. Everyone is welcome: Come as you are, whenever you can. Facilitators: Carol Eckerman, Nancy Corson Carter, Mark Davidson, and Allison Davidson Disciples Sunday School for kindergartners through fifth graders begins on Sunday, September 9, 9:45-10:45 am. Join us in the Education Building. This fall we'll study the beginning of Jesus' ministry, get ready for Christmas and His birthday, and ring chimes with Courtney Chavez. Questions? Theo Jass theo.l.jass@gmail.com or Patricia Sawin pesawin@gmail.com LET S DO THE NUMBERS Each month, Session will report key financial data about our church s budget. July revenue = $32,762 July expenses = $29,245 January - July revenue = $229,257 January-July expenses = $205,688 The church s regular monthly income comes from pledges, unpledged contributions, rental income, and an offset from the Hillsborough Presbyterian Church for their share in JoAnn s pension and medical benefits. If you have questions, please be in touch with John Rupp, Session Liaison to Finance Committee, or Finance Committee Chair Jim Spaeth.

3 YOUTH GROUP MEETINGS Middle school youth 5 th 7 t /8 th grade High school youth 8 t /9 th 12 th grade Both groups will meet in the Education Building and then split into their groups for activities/ devotion/fellowship. Karen NOVEMBER 4 -- YOUTH GROUP 12:15 PM - 2 PM Lunch will be served. NOVEMBER YOUTH GROUP 12:15 PM - 2 PM Lunch will be served. NOVEMBER YOUTH GROUP OFF-SITE ACTIVITY TBD Be sure to check your ! NOVEMBER YOUTH GROUP NO MEETING REC ARTISTS, AUTHORS, & PIE BAKERS!! A special fundraiser will be held in our Fellowship Hall on Saturday, November 17 from 10 am until 2 pm. It is to provide some financial aid for Rosa and her children. Everyone in our church who is a "Creative", whether, painter, photographer, author, woodworker, theologian, poet, origami-ist, shrinemaker, potter, knitter, or pie maker, to name a few, is invited to contribute a few items for sale during this special one-time event to create funds for the private use of our wonderful sanctuary guest, Rosa. Set up will happen between 7 and 9 pm on the Friday evening of November 16. There will be tables set up in the Fellowship Hall covered with white tablecloths and a few volunteers ready to assist in the set up. Each participant is responsible for pricing and signage and should limit their display to six to eight items. Pies should be brought on Saturday morning and there is no limit on the number; they sold out quickly in our previous Art Day. If you would like to be a participant contact the following people: Sandy Milroy Jens ( ) sandy.milroy@gmail.com Liz Evans ( ) emevans500@aol.com 3 Ways of Seeing, Ways of Being: The Art and Activism of Sister Corita Kent From the near-anonymity of teaching print-making classes at a small Catholic college to the cover of Time magazine and international fame as a political graphic artist, Sister Mary Corita Kent's transformation emerged as the result of a simple conviction: war can be eradicated. On what would have been Corita's 100 th birthday, come learn about this extraordinary individual, her philosophy that art, activism, and prayer are all simply ways of seeing and being, and create a hands-on project to keep or give. (And have some birthday cake, too!) Tuesday, November 20 th at 7:00 pm, Fellowship Hall. Sponsored by Friends of Christ School, Allison Davidson, presenter. Questions? storytreecastle@gmail.com FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY Rosa is one of the best pupusa makers in the Chapel Hill area. We have tentatively scheduled future fundraisers for first and third Sundays after worship. This is an opportunity for us to taste and enjoy Rosa's good cooking. Supporting donations of $2.50 per pupusa is welcomed but any donation is appreciated. Please feel free to sign up to help or you can also pre-order pupusas to pick up by ing me, Stacy Miller (StacyEon@gmail.com). If preordering, please specify the number of pupusas that you would like, and what type (spinach/cheese, pork/cheese and plain cheese.) Volunteers are needed for prepping, cooking, serving, and helping Rosa prepare pupusas. You are encouraged to sign up as a volunteer for these tasks by using the link or contacting Stacy Miller at stacyeon@gmail.com or
