2 November 6, 2016 CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP 32 nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Holy Communion Consecration Sunday Children Sing 11:00 AM PRELUDE Hymn Prelude on Gatescarth Dahl ( Give to Me, Lord, A Thankful Heart ) GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS NOISY OFFERING WE APPROACH GOD CHORAL INTROIT Be Joyful In the Lord Moore Chancel Choir *CALL TO WORSHIP When Saint Paul wrote to the churches he helped establish, he spoke greetings to them in phrases they understood: Caris which means Grace and Shalom which means Peace. And so we say Hello, Welcome, Howdy, Buenas Dias, Aloha, How Are Ya? And not just for ourselves, we are saying this for Christ Jesus, we are greeting one another as precious parts of the body of Christ. This is the gathering of people in order that God s love is made real, in this moment, at this table, in this place. God s love sends us into the world, full of the good news that God is with us, God who is for the world. Let us glorify God in worship, and with our song. *HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 327 From All That Dwell Below the Skies Lasst Uns Erfreuen *PRAYER OF THE DAY O God, you sent your Child among us to carry out a mission of love. You send us among our sisters and brothers to continue that mission always. Yet sometimes, we confess, we neglect the call. Forgive us when we display a lack of interest in the plight of others, when the horrors of their circumstances arouse more curiosity than compassion. Forgive us when we downplay our ability to make a difference for the better, when we act as though the strands of common humanity end at town lines, political affiliation or national borders. Forgive us when we regard our outreach as optional, when we place it somewhere other than at the heart of our faith. Forgive and redirect us, we pray, so our service might be strong and our sense of fulfillment deep. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. *ACT OF PRAISE NO. 577 Sing a New Church Nettleton Draw together at one table all the human family; Shape a circle ever wider and a people forever free. Let us bring the gifts that differ and, in splendid, varied ways, Sing a new church into being, one in faith and love and praise.

And now let the weak say I am strong, let the poor say I am rich, Because of what the Lord has done for us. Give thanks! *PRAYER OF DEDICATION THE CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION THE CONSECRATION OF OUR STEWARDSHIP The Invitation Communion Hymn No. 710 We Lift Our Voices Offering The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving and the Lord s Prayer (debts) Is the Lord with us? Here in this place? In words spoken? At this table to serve us? Yes. The Lord is with us, among us, in love ready to wash our feet like a servant; with open arms offering us himself in bread and wine. The Lord is with us.
4 Saint Paul wrote that we should present ourselves to God as a living offering, Not conformed to this world, but transformed with new hearts and minds to grow into God s good, acceptable and perfect will. This is why we lift up our hearts. We lift up our hearts to the Lord. We lift our voices, our hands, and our lives: we are an offering. This is wonderful. To receive from the Lord and to give to the Lord. It seems like the most right thing, to give thanks to the Lord our God. It is the most right thing to give our thanks and our praise. The Sharing of the Meal Prayer after the Meal and for the Consecration of our Stewardship O Lord of us all, you nourish us at the table of your selfgiving, you remind us of your servant way, and here you invite us to join you as stewards of this world and this life. So, having been fed, now, we hold in these baskets our commitments to you. More than pieces of paper saying what we intend to give; it is our covenant-keeping, and our discipleship; and our prayer that we gather in these baskets. We give you this morning not only our commitments but we give you the promise of our time, our prayers, our hours of concern, our special talents, our creativity, our hard work, and our money. We give it to you now: our commitment alive and wondrous and full of hope. We give in a spirit of cheerfulness and joy, giving to you who have gifted us with the bounty of your amazing grace. We give all in the name of the one who gave his all, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5 WAYSIDE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Sunday, November 6, 2016 WELCOME I will show love to those who were called unloved and, to those who were called not-my-people, I will say you are my people and they will answer, you are our God. (Hosea 2:23) Wayside Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) is a place where the mind is nourished as well as the spirit, and where we affirm the dignity and worth of every person. As we are all created in the image of God, we believe discrimination is incompatible with Christ s Gospel of unconditional love. While we celebrate our Presbyterian identity, we acknowledge that we are not alone on the path to understanding God. We invite conversations that move us to seek a deeper understanding of life in the Spirit. Be who you are and be welcome here. FOR OUR CHILDREN Childcare is available during the entire worship hour for infants and preschool children. Children may remain for the entire service or take advantage of childcare (kindergarten and younger). Children s worship activity bags are available for children remaining in the worship service. Please return them following worship. CHALLENGED CHILDREN AND YOUTH If sound is unsettling to your child or youth, ask the usher for earplugs at the back of the sanctuary. We will soon have teens trained to accompany a young person when worship becomes too long. Our hope is to allow parents a time of worship. If you are interested in finding a companion for your child let Keith know. SERVICE NOTES A hearing enhancement system is available for those who have a need. An usher will be happy to provide you with a receiver this morning. Large print bulletins are also available. NOTES FOR TODAY S SERVICE Today is both Communion Sunday and Stewardship Consecration Sunday. Because this is the Lord s Table, you are invited to join in Holy Communion. Communion is by intinction: a server will offer you bread that you will dip into the cup and then eat. As you come forward to receive communion, those who have Stewardship Pledge Cards to present are invited to bring them forward and, having received communion, place those cares in the basket provided. COMMUNITY OUTREACH FORUM Come join in a creative participatory conversation about Wayside s Mission and Outreach on November 13 during the Sunday School hour Youth and Adults, young and old. This will be in the Fellowship Hall and refreshments will be provided. The forum will be led by Steve Porter and members of the Outreach Committee.
