1 May 2018 Newsletter As you get older, birthdays start to become less and less a thing. When you are young, a birthday is a special thing, you have a party, people get together to celebrate you, they bring presents; it s a big deal. Then there are those family birthday parties where your aunts and uncles and grandparents come over, you all have a special dinner and you look for ways to escape from your relatives. But as we age, there are times we want to be reminded less and less about getting older and marking another year passing without much new to look forward to. But taking some time to pay attention to how you and your life are changing and giving other people a chance to celebrate the gifts that they have received by having you in their life. Coming up in a few weeks, May 20th, we are going to have one of those later types of birthday parties around here. At Pentecost, we mark the birth of the church, when the Spirit was given to the first disciples so that they could go out and tell the world about what God had done in Jesus Christ. That day, instead of having some big hoopla, we will take time to reflect on how the church has changed over the millennia and look at what it means to us both individually and as a congregation. I hope that you will join us that Sunday for a family birthday party.
2 It is hard to believe that we only have two more Sunday School sessions left in the program year!! It has been a fun year filled with mission activities, games, crafts and learning ways to live our faith. Our classes would not have been possible without the help of John Riedmaier, Karen Stephan, Ann Tennyson and Amanda Lavoe. Thank you to those who provided snacks throughout the year! The students will sponsor a Cents-a-bility fundraiser on Sunday, May 6. The donations collected will be earmarked for a local summer lunch program and for providing school supplies for children in a Lebanese refugee camp through Presbyterian Mission. Please plan to support this important mission of our Sunday School students. Coins, bills, large and small, & checks will be accepted! Checks should be made out to Living Hope Presbyterian Church. If you have any questions, please see Marcia Sinner or ask one of the students. We have a tentative date for our summer Sunday School gathering: our regular Sunday School time on July 15. The purpose is to keep the students connected during the summer and we will have special activities planned. If you would like to be a part of this day, please speak to Marcia. The Christian Education Committee voted and Session approved the curriculum for the program year. We will continue with "Growing in Grace and Gratitude". It is a Presbyterian based curriculum and is well suited to a multi-age classroom. It focuses on bible stories and how we can turn these into lessons for living in our world today and living how Jesus would want us to. Please consider helping during the program year. You will get as much out of the experience as our students will!!! Marcia Sinner Christian Education Committee Chair Pentecost Offering May 20 Each year on Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the church. The Holy Spirit remains with us still, connecting us with the church of the past, continuing to inspire the church of today and pointing us to the church of the future. Each year, this celebration is marked by receiving the Pentecost Offering which nurtures the faith of those who are the church to come children, youth, and young adults. 40% of offering is LHPC s to donate to support young people in our community 25% goes to Young Adult Volunteers program 25% to ministries with youth (12-18) 10% to Educate a Child, Transform the World 2
3 Divine Intervention Ministries at Tippecanoe Presbyterian Church Our Larry Under the Bridge (LUTB) lunch making ministry for the homeless is part of the Divine Intervention Ministry at Tippecanoe Presbyterian Church in Bayview. Many area Presbyterian churches take a Sunday or Monday and deliver packed lunches to Bayview. Larry actually exists he was one of the original campers that received lunches, was instrumental in starting the program, and continues to help run and manage it. Below is more information from the Tippecanoe website: Larry Under The Bridge is a food and encouragement ministry to the homeless in the Bay View area. Bagged dinners are delivered to strategic locations near campsites on Sunday evenings every week. LUTB helps people each Sunday and Monday night of each week. Each dinner consists of: 2 sandwiches, Granola/breakfast bar, 2 pieces of fruit, Cookies or other desert item, Occasionally chips, Bottled water In the summer months juice boxes, Gatorade, and extra waters are given out. Bug spray, camouflaged tarps, and sleeping bags are some of the other items handed out when available. In the winter months gloves, hats, and long underwear were also supplied to the campers who do not participate in Divine Intervention Prayer Vigil/Warming Room. Donated toiletries, socks, underwear, toilet paper are handed out year-round. AND...Larry was just honored by Molina Healthcare as one of 6 statewide Champions for his work with the homeless! Congratulations Larry and to all our champions who make DI happen each year! We are changing the world, one person at a time! YOU are changing! The homeless who we are coming to know as friends are changing! Your Church and our Churches members and ministry are changing! 3
4 Reverse Offering for Food Pantries For a twist on our ongoing food collection for the Waukesha Food Pantry and the Falls Area Food Pantry, Living Hope conducted a Reverse Offering on Sunday, April 22. The offering plates were circulated and the congregation was asked to remove a colorful food icon card. These food cards can be used as a reminder tape to a refrigerator, put on bulletin board, keep in a pocket to bring non-perishable food items or diapers back to church. More cards are available at church pick one up! You can buy the item on the card, or anything else from the lists on the next page The items will be collected over the weeks and months to come and donated to the Waukesha Food Pantry and The Falls Area Food Pantry. Cash donations are also welcome! A large table will be located at the back of the sanctuary each Sunday to place your gifts to the food pantries. We leave you with a quote from Pastor David Shelstad with Holy Cross Lutheran Church: When I volunteer at the Falls Food Pantry, I am reminded of Matthew 25:35, which says. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink! We all have a role to play in ending hunger in our community Please consider joining Living Hope Presbyterian in giving to the Waukesha Food Pantry and the Falls Food Pantry. Your heartfelt gifts do make a difference! - Thank you on behalf of the Mission Committee 4
