Dorchester Presbyterian Church The Good News Palm Sunday. March 20.10:15 am Holy Week HIGHLIGHTS The children will assist in worship with a palm processional; children who would like to participate in the processional should meet in the sanctuary courtyard at 10:00 am to get instructions. Maundy Thursday Seder Meal March 24 6:00 pm We will gather for a Seder Meal and worship service in the fellowship hall on Maundy Thursday. This meal will include a somewhat traditional Passover/Seder meal with foods and traditions like Jesus may have shared with his disciples at the Last Supper. Communion will be served (with the meal), and worship will be throughout with the reading of scripture, reflection and discussion, and the singing of hymns. We will be eating family-style, so all ages are welcome. The tone will be reverent, moving from fun and relaxed, to a more somber tone, much like it was on that original night. Sunday Worship 10:15 A.M. Sunday School 9:00 A.M. Good Friday Worship Service March 25 7:00 pm Our Good Friday worship service will include a Tenebrae service. Tenebrae (Latin for shadows or darkness ) is distinct in the gradual extinguishing of candles while scripture is read until only the Christ candle remains. We will leave in silence and darkness as we contemplate Christ s sacrifice and await his return. DPC Youth Good Shepherd School Easter Sunday Breakfast and Egg Hunt.March 27.9:00 am We will hold our annual Easter Morning Breakfast in the fellowship hall. Please bring a covered dish (or two) to share with your church family. The fellowship committee will provide the drinks. Children: bring your Easter baskets to collect all of the eggs you find! Silent Retreat on Saturday March 26.2:00-5:00 pm The Saturday of Holy Week is the Jewish Sabbath. Take time to reflect on the events of Holy Week as we look toward Easter and a new life of resurrection. The church campus and sanctuary will be open and available for those wishing to do some silent reflection. Come and go as you please. A variety of self-guided devotions will be available. Congratulations to Linda Jenkins Session Highlights March Birthdays Easter Sunday Worship.March :15 am As you enter worship on Easter Sunday, you are invited to bring fresh flowers from your yards and gardens to decorate the Easter Cross. The cross will be transformed from rough wood into a beautiful cross of flowers, helping us remember the miracle and hope of Jesus resurrection and the promise of new life in Christ.
The Good News March 2016 Page 2 DPC YOUTH SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY UPDATE! On Souper Bowl Sunday, our youth collected $ for Katie s Krops in Summerville. Way to go DPC for making such a generous donation to a very deserving cause. Katie s Krops, which started with one GIANT cabbage in 2008 that served 245 people, provides healthy fruit and vegetables to food banks and families in need. PYC FEBRUARY NEWS! We ended January with an evening of ice skating, high-lighted by Jeff on skates! By the end of the evening, all 33 participants were off the wall and skating well, but were tired. We then ventured to 2 nd Presbyterian Church for a Service of Hope & Healing to commemorate six months sense the Mother Emmanuel Tragedy. The music was spectacular and the speakers were quite energetic! Our high school youth spent Valentine s weekend at Bethelwoods in York, SC, learning how to disconnect and grow closer to God and to one another. We are grateful for Jon Osterritter and Jocelyn Pryor, who served as our advisors for this event. We ended the weekend by watching God s Not Dead, an inspirational film about a college student who must prove the existence of God to his philosophy professor or fail the class. In the end, we all agreed GOD S NOT DEAD! Each month we divide into groups and discuss topics requested by our youth. In January we tackled bullying and social media, and in February we dove into world religions, conflict and tolerance. Our small group discussions are eye opening, and the insightfulness of our youth regularly astounds the advisors. February concludes with the much anticipated Presbyterian Women s Game Night, where the youth and PW share an evening of food, fellowship and fun. Many thanks to the PW for their hospitality and enthusiasm for our youth. RENT-A-YOUTH IS BACK! DPC Youth have the opportunity to attend the 2016 PCUSA Youth Triennium in Purdue, IN, July This event, held once every three years, is a massive youth event where 7000 Presbyterian youth from around the US gather to worship, sing, laugh, learn and explore their faith. The cost of this event is significant at $750 per youth. In an effort to help our youth get to Purdue, we are bringing back the rent-a-youth program! Let our youth help you get your spring cleaning finished! If you have a yard or house project, simply give Andi a call ( ) and she will coordinate the rest. Together, we can get your work done and send our youth on an inspirational journey.
Page 3 The Good News March 2016 Good Shepherd School Last month, we continued with one of our traditions: Celebrating God s Love. Families took a paper heart home (provided by Good Shepherd School) to decorate together. Then, they returned it so that we were able to display them on Good Shepherd School s Valentine s Day Tree. The children also made valentines for a local nursing home. This is part of our Operation: Spreading God s Love One Heart at a Time! This month (March) we are celebrating two holidays: St. Patrick s Day and Easter. We have planned a few activities that we think may be fun and exciting. In the midst of all of that, we will teach the children the importance of Easter and share how much God loves them so much! GSS Valentine s Day Tree Congratulations to Linda Jenkins! Each year Trident Hospital selects one doctor, one employee and one volunteer for the Frist Humanitarian Award, for each hospital. On Friday February 26, 2016 Linda Jenkins was awarded this prestigious honor for 2015, for Summerville Medical Center where she volunteers as a Stephen Minister every Tuesday morning. The framed certificate reads: The Frist Humanitarian Award was created in 1971 and named in honor of Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr., ( ). This award recognizes individuals whose daily dedication and care giving epitomize the highest standards of quality and personal commitment. Congratulations Linda!
Page 4 Under the Pastor s Report, Jeff announced the names of the members of the church s new sign committee: Rick Sutton, chair Brandon Page Doug Richardson Kirk Stewart Bob Veline Jude Beery This is an exciting project for Dorchester as we look forward to replacing our worn out & barely noticeable, but all-important church sign! He also sought from session a decision on where to place the responsibility of the New Members Classes. After some discussion, the Christian Education Committee was approved by common consent. Under Committee Repots: The Deacons have been working hard to keep up with the needs of our members and met on the last Sunday of the month. The Youth enjoyed a super bowl party and also collected $672 with the Souper Bowl offering that goes to Katie s Krops. They have been ice skating, attended comfort and healing services at 2 nd Pres., watched the movie God s Not Dead, attended the Bethelwoods High School Retreat, and are deciding where on the campus to place a donated basketball goal from Andi Stem. Their annual game & supper night with the Presbyterian Women & friends was on February 28 and coming up soon is a lock-in for the girls on March 4 and a camping trip to Edisto for the boys on March 4 & 5. All this made possible by Andi, the wonderful Youth Advisers and of course our incredible youth. The Finance Committee report was positive and all bills have been paid. The promise of a stock donation worth about $2,500 is expected and will be invested. The Good News March 2016 Highlights from February's Meeting of Session Christian Education has been very busy updating the Safe Place Policy and making sure all paperwork is current & in place for any drivers for youth events. Pam Brice is going to continue to serve as the Children s Church coordinator and April Wardlow has volunteered to take over the children s worship bags. Kevin is beginning to work on a song with the children for the Palm Sunday service practice is every Sunday at 9:40 until then. Tina Kuhlmann is researching curriculum for next year and is also working on communion Training that will be held this fall. Summer events for 3K-5 th grade are being organized and will begin on June 25 with a day of VBS at DPC from 9:00 2:00. Stay tuned for more good things to come. The Technology Committee has been very busy working on the new church website. Committees are to submit ideas for their page by the March meeting of Session so it can go live soon after. They also have been working on important updates and replacements to the computer systems at GSS & the church office. The Fellowship Committee s next big event is the March 27 Easter Brunch & Egg Hunt at 9:00 a.m. The Mission Committee has begun plans for Dorchester Serves Day on April 23. You will have an opportunity to sign up to work on projects at Low Country Home of Hope, where exterior painting will be done, My Sister s House, who is currently working on a list of their needs, Habitat for Humanity, where DPC is scheduled to help build, Days for Girls with the Presbyterian Women, who will work on this project in the fellowship hall. More information will be shared beginning April 3. The Personnel Committee received approval to add Brenda Sutton as their fourth member. They are continuing the search for a new organist and are reviewing the Policies & Procedures Manual. They are likewise reviewing the merit pay policy and evaluation forms for The Good Shepherd
Page 5 School. With reference to the search for a Christian Educator, the 7-member committee sought and received the authority from Session to utilize the Church Leadership Connection system. The Property Committee completed many tasks at the last work day but still has an unresolved issue with some of the outside lights. The next work day is March 19. The Worship Committee is preparing for Easter with ordering lilies for the sanctuary and preparing for the Seder meal on Maundy Thursday. They also agreed unanimously to sever the ties with The Blossom Shop who had a key to deliver flower orders to the sanctuary on the Saturday before worship. They will seek a similar relationship with OK Florist and Jan Goin-Beebe will let us know what the new policy will be when confirmed. And the committee is responsible for the new red fellowship pads we are using! The Good Shepherd School is doing well financially and enrollment is high. The director briefed the board on the results of the Dorchester County First Steps evaluation. One teacher is out on maternity leave and the Personnel Committee is interviewing two new employee candidates. In addition, the director The Good News March 2016 Session Highlights Continued... I reported for the Presbyterian Women and was pleased to announce that the proceeds from the church cookbook will go towards the purchase of the new church sign. And the proceeds from the February 28 Soup Sunday sale will likewise go towards the new sign. The ladies enjoyed a fun night of games and good food with the Youth on February 28 th and also completed more surgical caps and therapy dolls from MUSC. The new project, Days for Girls, is gaining momentum and will be the PW s focus project for Dorchester Serves Day on April 23. Under Unfinished Business, Pam Brice was elected to serve as the replacement commissioner for the February 27 Presbytery Meeting in place of Peter Jones and Martha Sue Hope was chosen as an alternate. Under New Business, it is the Clerk s responsibility to present the mandated Year-End Statistical Report for 2015 to session for approval. After review it was approved and submitted online to the General Assembly on time. All for now ~ Kathy Worthington, Clerk of Session sought and received authorization to approve some merit pay raises for staff. March Birthdays Happy Birthday From your church family!
