ASSOCIATE VICAR 2018 All Saints Ecclesall is a vibrant missional multi-generation church family of around 600 adults and children called to love God, live life and to share our faith with Ecclesall and beyond. We are looking for another senior colleague to work closely with the Vicar and the staff team, who will help All Saints to grow and develop in innovative and imaginative ways in response to the calling of the living God. We are looking for a gifted and experienced male or female, married or single colleague who has the potential to become the leader of a large church in the future. Could that be you?

Church Office All Saints Ecclesall Ringinglow Road Ecclesall S11 7PP Dear Candidate Associate Vicar Telephone By now you will have read the advert, explored our website and visited our Facebook page. We hope that they have inspired you to want to get to know us, to enter into a deeper conversation and to explore the possibility of sharing in the leadership of this wonderful church family. We want to grow in our passion and love for the God we see in the face of Jesus. This is the God who reveals himself in the Bible and whose Spirit is at work amongst us today. As a church family we want to live this brief chapter of eternity in all its fullness, to God s glory and for the extension of his kingdom. This an exciting time for All Saints. We are growing younger and growing in numbers. We have been particularly thrilled to see lots of young families joining us over the last couple of years. While the number of teenagers joining our 2018 five day post Easter House Party was the highest for many years. Looking ahead we are: about to complete the redevelopment of our Spirituality Centre at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Whirlow this summer on the verge of sending a team to resource and revitalise our neighbouring parish of St Gabriel s Greystones at the beginning of exploring building an extension to the church building working in partnership to establish Clifford All Saints a new Voluntary Aided Primary School from this autumn working in partnership with the Diocese to establish a strategic network of resource churches by 2025 excited to have booked Palace Hotel in Buxton for 300 people to attend our Big Church Weekend Away in January 2019 The opportunities at All Saints are myriad. We are a church family that is a challenge to lead and yet hungry for leadership. We have been given much and much needs to be expected of us. We know that you too will have much to offer, that much will be expected of you, and that you too will want to grow in your faith and discipleship. We look forward to getting to know you. With love and prayers on behalf of the church family of All Saints Michael, Sarah, Ruth and Dave The Wardens and Deputy Wardens 2

Our Calling - Loving God. Living Life. Sharing Faith Our calling is to be a vibrant, missional and multi-generation Christian community. We worship God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, living our daily lives as worship and sharing our faith with Ecclesall and beyond. Worship is at the heart of all that we do. We believe that our life together and our shared mission in the world should flow out of our worship of the God we see in the face of Jesus, who reveals himself in the Bible and whose Holy Spirit is at work amongst us today. We are... Multi-generational Rooted in our local community and in the wider south west of Sheffield, we are a church family of all ages. We are very diverse in our needs, callings, and aspirations. Open Evangelical Our commitment to scripture, mission, evangelism and discipleship are foundational to our faith. We welcome Christian disciples from other traditions and want to learn from them, growing together in passion and love for the God we see in the face of Jesus. Exploring Confident in the promises of God in the Bible and secure in 2000 years of Christian discipleship and spirituality we want to explore all that it means to be a follower of Jesus today. We welcome those who are less sure of what they believe and want to make space for those who doubt or disagree. Welcoming of the Holy Spirit We long to be in tune with the re-creative, restorative and reconciling work of the Spirit of God as we participate in God s mission in the world and welcome the prophetic and healing work of the Holy Spirit today. Wholeheartedly Anglican We express our love for the living God through a breadth and depth of spirituality and worshipping styles. We give thanks for the generations who have gone before us and wholeheartedly belong to the Diocese of Sheffield and value Anglican ordering of mission, ministry and worship. Resourcing of others We have been given much, both spiritually and materially. We recognise our responsibility to share our faith, to resource other churches in their mission and to bless others with the resources God has given us. 3

Our Context Ecclesall is a leafy suburb on the very edge of the Peak District. Cycling, running and walking are major leisure activities. The route of the annual Sheffield Half Marathon passes directly in front the church. This year 20 members of the church family participated. We are close to Sheffield s world class universities and hospitals and a significant proportion of our church family work in education or for the NHS. The quality of life here is high and many parishioners are active well into their nineties. The medical centres and schools all enjoy excellent reputations. Our Hallam Parliamentary Constituency is often described as one of the best educated in the country and one of the most affluent outside of the south east of England. As a church family we are diverse in our needs, callings, and aspirations and fully represent our local demographic. We are male and female, married and single. We are very young, young, middle-aged, old and very old. We are pre-school, in education, working and retired. Together we are immensely proud of and hugely blessed by the inheritance of faith passed onto us by the generations who have preceded us. This includes the most remarkable re-ordered contemporary Cathedral style church building set in a beautiful and well-kept open churchyard and estate of some 10 acres. The estate also includes the hall complex, vicarage, clergy houses, the school, and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Whirlow. The hall complex, built around an 18 th century farmhouse hosts the church office and also is heavily used by the local community. The halls are very much in need of refurbishment. In advance of this, the PCC have commissioned a community consultation to inform our understanding of the mission of the halls going forward. Built in 1834 the school has served Ecclesall in various institutional guises. This summer it will close as a voluntary controlled Junior School to re-open in January 2019 as part of the new Clifford All Saints voluntary aided Primary School with an enhanced Christian ethos and a stronger relationship with All Saints. The Chapel of the Holy Spirit is hidden in a quiet corner of Whirlow and set in beautiful grounds, from where you can walk into the countryside. Designed by the church architect George Pace in 1958, the Chapel of the Holy Spirit hosts the Whirlow Spirituality Centre resourced and managed in partnership with Whirlow Grange Ltd. Whirlow exists to offer a breadth and depth of Christian spiritual nurture not normally available in individual local churches. Dan Christian, Associate Vicar All Saints is a wonderful place to minister. It is a privilege to see what God is doing here and to work with such a supportive group of friends. I love working in a team and praying, seeing and encouraging colleagues on a daily basis. The church members are really encouraging and we are at a very exciting point in the life of All Saints. This church really embraces new ideas with energy! So please join us if you want to see God renew his work here in Ecclesall in the name of Jesus Christ. 4

Our History Christian worship began in the hamlet of Ecclesall in the 13 th century in the Premonstratian tradition of Beauchief Abbey. Following the reformation, the Norman chapel was restored for divine worship, some forty years before the Book of Common Prayer was approved by Parliament in In 1788 a new larger church was consecrated to the glory of God. It was extended in 1908 with a particularly fine gothic revival chancel and transept designed by Temple Moore. Prior to Great War Ecclesall was still largely rural with numerous farms and mansion houses. Ninety years later the building was re-ordered including furnishings by Richard Giles to create the inspiring and contemporary Cathedral-style sacred space we enjoy today. Under the leadership of the then vicar Peter Williams, the 1998 re-ordering acted as the springboard for the renewal and growth of the church family into the new millennium. The years were difficult for All Saints leading to a significant reduction in membership and giving. Since 2013 the church has been through a period of recovery. All Saints is now buzzing with renewed life, hope and purpose. For long established members of the church family the memories of the difficult years are beginning to fade, while our increasing numbers of new members only know All Saints as it is today, and are excited by what God is doing in our midst through Alpha, 25+ small groups and our youth and children s ministries. Rachel McLafferty, Operations Manager Since coming into post just over a year ago I have found a supportive and welcoming church that has allowed me to develop my skills, my understanding and my faith. The staff team are a huge part of this, from my first day they have been there to help and listen. We share prayers, meals and sporting activities during the week. Our church family is loving, creative and bold and are always there to help in our work. This is a gre at place to work and an even better place to worship. 5

Worship Worship is at the heart of all that we do. We believe that our life together and our shared mission in the world should flow out of our worship of the God we see in the face of Jesus, who reveals himself in the Bible and whose Holy Spirit is at work amongst us today. Average Sunday the attendance at All Saints is On special occasions and festivals attendance can touch 1,000. 7 Our team Gary Wilton has been the Vicar of All Saints since Previously he was the Archbishop s Representative to the EU and Canon of the Pro-Cathedral of Holy Trinity Brussels. He sees himself as life-long learner who wants to make connections between Sundays and everyday life. Gary is married to Gillian and they are very proud of their two grown up sons Alex and Simeon. He is passionate about the Bible and wants to grow as a Christian disciple following in the footsteps of Jesus and open to the work of the Holy Spirit today. Gary loves All Saints, sunshine, long walks, good wine and stilton. He believes that Church should be safe, deep, fun, challenging and life-giving all at the same time. Ministry Team 6 Operations Team Pastoral Ministry Leader Sue Blaby Finance Officer Janet Daye Children s Chaplain Rosie Blackett IT Support Richard Donkin and Ministry Leader Associate Vicar Dan Christian Administrator Sally Hunter Director of Choral David Onac Operations Manager Rachel McLafferty Music Youth Ministry Joseph Sheldon Estate Caretaker Mike Rowland Leader Curate and Director Alistair Stevenson Accounts Assistant Angela Southward of Worship Associate Vicar Vacant Administrator Lesa Thompson Seniors Ministry Leader Interns Vacant Intern Vacant Vacant The ministry of All Saints is supported by a small army of volunteers as well as a gifted team of associate clergy and lay ministers. Loving, trusting and committed relationships are key to our renewal and our growth as a community of disciples. The staff team pray and eat together regularly. While members of the ministry team go on an annual two night retreat at the beginning of Lent. It is a very significant time of review and reflection as well as an important opportunity to study the Bible and to listen and to pray for each other. Compared to many churches we are blessed with a large team but in relation to the size and needs of the church family we are understaffed. Our life together is characterised by hard work energised by fun and a lot of laughter. Not surprisingly the PCC are eager to appoint someone who fits All Saints and the existing staff team. We are therefore advertising the post with a flexible portfolio of ministries in order to attract the right person. Very generously both Dan Christian and Alistair Stevenson have offered to adjust their ministry portfolios accordingly. 7
