2 President s Message Summer is over. I always welcome fall as a time to start over. Even though I am no longer in the classroom fall still awakens in me a time to start over as the students begin a new year with renewed enthusiasm and new goals. General Assembly I want to extend my personal invitation to you and your friends to be renewed and get ideas for new goals by attending the 2011 General Assembly hosted by the New Hampton Deanery in Charles City. I want to thank president Annette Simonson and president elect Anita Adams for their invitation. The Lord has sent many women to help put together an exciting General Assembly. The theme taken from the National Council of Catholic Women is Love In Action and the speakers, commission displays and layettes will highlight ways that women have made a difference or can make a difference in the future when they have put love in action. Menu Breakfast will have coffee cake, coffee and apple cider. Lunch will be chicken puff pastries, cheesy potatoes, apple salad, roll and carrot cake. Mass Msgr.Dean Walz will be the principle celebrant for our liturgy. Msgr. Stan Hayek will concelebrate. Please be prepared for the offertory collection. The collection will be for the American Martyrs Retreat House in honor of Sister Jeanine Kuhn and Sister Michelle Gallagher Service Commission In the dictionary the meaning of service is help given to others a service to something or someone. As members of a Council of Catholic Women we perform service everyday. i.e. we help in our churches with funerals, parish get togethers, layettes and aiding in recovery after national and international disasters. My pet projects are domestic violence and pornography. According to national news we are making some strides in capturing Porn rings. Sadly domestic violence seems to be a loosing battle. So many families are torn apart. Help is out there. Again thank you. Prayer is a powerful tool. Layette Landslide The Layette landslide will be highlighted as in the past. There is still time to sew one or two items or visit one of the fall garage sales for some gently used baby items. The traditional layette was in the last issue of The Link. Incomplete layettes are also welcome. Please have everything well marked. The Lord keeps count of items provided for those in need but it is also fun and a great motivation for us to record the items at the General Assembly. As in the past you are encouraged to find local sources for your layettes. Please let Elaine know if you are bringing a large number to Charles City so that transportation can be arranged. Input 2011 has been a year of change for Dubuque ACCW. In November it will be time to evaluate how we have implemented these changes and evaluate the goals set for If you have some new ideas or some positive criticism, please let your deanery president know. She can bring your ideas to the attention of the officers and committee chairs. Please check the registration form, flier and publicity concerning the exciting speakers we have for the day. Local Charles City talent will be highlighted. I am looking forward to seeing you in Charles City. Our General assembly is October 27. Besides featuring our three commissions, we have Rose Ann Jero 1909 Edgebrook Drive Marshalltown, IA lljero@marshallnet.com Lois Ruff 703 Franklin Street Decorah, IA (563) the Layette Landslide. We are happy and proud to help Mother s and babies in need. Among the places we send to are Indian establishments, Mexico, and our own hospitals and locals in need. We are always happy to place them if you know new areas and places. Thanks for a job well done. Archdiocesan Mission Statement: We, the Church of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, are God s people, gathering together as a Eucharistic community to worship, sharing the Word of God, affirming traditional and emerging leadership roles and supporting families to model Catholic faith and morality for the next generation. We commit ourselves to a lifelong faith formation and to the service of humanity because we believe in the Risen Christ, in the wisdom and kindness of God, the Author of life, and in the love the Holy Spirit bestows. 2

3 Historian The 39th Convention of the Dubuque Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women was held at St. Joseph parish in Preston, Iowa on September hosted by the Bellevue Deanery. An awards ceremony was held at the Cathedral with Archbishop Kucera presiding on June 6, The 1st challenge of the year for president Cecilia Podhajsky was reorganization of deanery boundaries which took effect November 1. For simplicity sake and to be uniform in the archdiocese the ACCW Council accepted the same boundaries lines as the Priest s deaneries. The Spirituality Commission Mary Tritz new deaneries 457 Burch Street were Ames, Dubuque, Iowa Bellevue, Cedar Rapids, Charles City, Decorah, Dubuque, Dyersville, Elkader, Independence, Marshalltown, Mason City, New Hampton and Waterloo The Archdiocese legislative information committee goals were respect life, rural life conference, legislation against pornography (morality in media) and promote the prayer for legislator week the 3rd week of February On October 1, 1986 Executive Director Betty Berrie retired but remained on the board. Growing in Relationship with Jesus What helps you become closer to God in everyday life? Each of us has a unique way of interacting with God, but the most important thing is to be intentional about growing your relationship with Jesus - the way, the truth and the life. One of the best ways to grow in love and knowledge of Christ is by reading His word in the Bible and spending time in daily praise and prayer. Prayer energizes your life; simply talking to God all day long as you do with your loved ones. Each morning praise God first for the new day, the sunshine, nature, all the blessings we have, and all the people you will encounter that day. Offer everything you think, do and say for the honor and glory of God. Remember that Jesus loves you so much and He died for all of us! Jesus is living in you and me. When reflecting on God, take time to listen to Him. The voice of Jesus has compassion, mercy, kindness, patience, love, peace, joy, and forgiveness. Also in your daily reflection, vocalize the goodness of God through the instrument of your tongue. John 14:13-14 says..whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it. The most important way to praise God is the most perfect sacrifice of the Mass. When celebrating the Sunday and daily liturgy, you are in Christ s real presence in the Eucharist. Keep Holy the Sabbath Day! Phyllis Einwalter th Avenue Fort Atkinson, IA phylliseinwalter@yahoo.com 3

7 Be Not Afraid And when he had come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast it out? And he said to them, This kind can be cast out in no way except by prayer and fasting. Mark 9:27-28 As I sat down to begin this article on the 40 Days for Life Campaign, the first thing that came to mind was the scripture quoted above. We (pro-life activists) know that our battle is a spiritual one and we must always put our trust in God. It is easy to get battle weary and wonder what good does it do and why we go on. I knew that the 40 day campaign was based on prayer and fasting, so that was where I planned to begin. After looking up the scripture I visited the 40 days website and chuckled to myself when I read their first entry Christ told us some demons can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. The two go hand in hand. Prayer keeps us rooted in the fact that it is our desire to carry out God s will. Fasting is a sacrifice that helps us reach beyond our own limitations with God s help. The campaign is based on 3 principles, the first, prayer & fasting. The second principle is a constant vigil. The plan is to keep pray-ers out front of an abortuary 24/7 for 40 days. Participants are present as prayerful witnesses to the employees, clients and the entire community that there is evil in (our) midst and we want to see an end to it. The 40 day time period is based on biblical history where God uses that time frame to transform individuals, communities, even the whole world. The final principle is community outreach. Participants also conduct an educational drive to spread the pro-life message to churches, schools, neighborhoods and the media. In their own words 40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion in America. The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America. 7 The first 40 Days for Life Campaign was held in Bryan/ College Station, Texas in News of their successes led other communities to Ellen Markham Pro Life Chair 1724 Geraldine Dr. Dubuque, IA elmarkham@mchsi.com conduct their own campaigns in 2005 & The first national campaign was held in the fall of That was followed by another in the spring of 2008, coinciding with the season of Lent. There have been eight coordinated 40 Days for Life campaigns since These efforts have mobilized people in all 50 states, 7 Canadian provinces, 4 Australian states, plus England, Northern Ireland, and Denmark. Among the countless blessings that have resulted from these efforts are 4,313 babies saved from abortion (documented, there may have been more that we didn t hear about). There have been 53 abortion workers who have quit their jobs and walked away from the abortion industry and 14 abortion facilities that have shut down. (For more success stories go to com) The next coordinated 40 Days for Life campaigns from September 28 November 6, Although it will have begun prior to your receiving this newsletter, you may still participate. If there is a pro-life group near you conducting a campaign, contact them and sign up to join them in front of the local abortion facility. They will welcome any hour you can give. (Go to click on locations and scroll down to Iowa and click on the city closest to you. There you will find a map, the hours they are out front and contact information.) In addition, join in praying and fasting for the intentions of the campaign: for an end to abortion, for conversion of those involved in the abortion industry and for healing for the many who are hurting after abortion. I have heard (but cannot verify) that the phrase Be not afraid is in the bible 366 times once for each day of the year and one bonus reminder. Fear keeps people away but those who have confronted their fears and joined us anyway are the first to admit their fears were ungrounded. In over 3 years of full time (every hour the facility is open) protesting/picketing/praying in front of Planned Parenthood in Dubuque, there have been no incidents; only blessings! This is God s work. He is our protector, our comforter, our shield. I trust that God will bless you in your efforts, too.
