3 Project Linus Northminster Quilters knit and crochet washable blankets for this volunteer, non-profit, national organization. The blankets provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children in the Tucson community who are seriously ill or traumatized. Our blanket makers meet the third Friday of the month from 9:00am-12:00pm in the Grundstrom and Multipurpose Rooms. New participants are always welcome to be part of this wonderful way to share God s love. Contact: Rene Lassise ( ) NPC contact: Pat Anderson ( ) Adult Mission Experiences Multiple mission opportunities are available for adults throughout the year for personal, hands -on participation in vital ministries, including a compassion ministry to those who have been hospitalized; rebuilding homes and communities in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, building and painting homes and ministering to children in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, and serving at the Gospel Rescue Mission in Tucson. 4 Casa Paloma The Primavera Foundation promotes social and economic justice for disadvantaged and marginalized individuals throughout the Tucson metropolitan area. Its Casa Paloma program offers a drop-in center and transitional housing for unaccompanied homeless women, especially older women, those not immediately employable and others who often fall between the cracks of existing programs. Deacons and others at Northminster volunteer at and support this outreach. Contact: Jenny Cowen ( , ext. 102) NPC contact: Carol Schutte ( ) Cragin Elementary School Outreach edweb.tusd.k12.az.us/cragin/ Northminster held its first worship service in the hallways of Cragin School in July 1951 and today we continue in a missional relationship with the school and its staff. Many church members partner with teachers as Reading Seed volunteers, classroom volunteers, and library helpers. Northminster also works alongside Cragin staff in PTA events, science fairs and through site-council representation. Through the power of Jesus Christ, they serve the homeless and needy by providing for their spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental wholeness. Northminster remodeled and refurbished five rooms at the Mission s Women and Children s Center for homeless women and their children. Contact: Rev. 5 Interfaith Community Services (ICS) Northminster is one of 45 faith communities that join with ICS in providing a safety net to help seniors, disabled persons, and those in financial crisis achieve stable and independent living. Volunteers deliver mobile meals, staff the food bank, and provide transportation, health advocacy and emergency financial assistance. Contact: Sandi Brickley ( ) NPC contact: Belva Burig ( ) Refugee and Immigrant Ministry (RIM) When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt; I am the Lord your God. -Leviticus 19:33-34 Objective RIM complements ongoing NPC ministries with the purpose of fully integrating Christian refugees and immigrants from anywhere in the world into the fellowship and mission of Northminster Presbyterian Church. Integration implies, given time, that RIM will work itself out of a job as NPC becomes a cross-cultural, diverse church of Jesus Christ. RIM uses the following structures/ministries to encourage the congregation to get involved in this ministry and to support our refugee and asylum seekers: Worship, Christian Education, Intentional fellowship gatherings, mentoring, Samaritan apartment program and Sojourner Fund, which provide assistance concerning issues such as job training skills, legal advice, visa applications, etc. NPC Contacts: Pastor John Cheek ( , ext. 226) Pastor Pete Seiferth ( , ext. 242) Middle Eastern Presbyterian Fellowship (MEPF) This ministry is a joint effort of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. s Office of Middle Eastern Ministries in the USA, the Synod of the Southwest and the Presbytery de Cristo. The fellowship allows Arab-speaking Christians in the Tucson area Jordanese, Lebanese, Syrians, Palestinians, Iraqis and Egyptians the opportunity to worship in their own language and culture. The ministry also reaches out to those unfamiliar with the church and Christianity. 6 Acción Ministries Founded in 1989, Acción brings Americans to partner with Mexican Presbyterian Churches in the Yucatan and to help provide educational opportunities to children, especially those from rural Mayan communities. High school students at Northminster partner with Roger Aviles in Merida. NPC contacts: Rev. Ken Skodiak ( , ext. 225) Barb Schmidt ( ) Alongside Ministries International This international Christian fellowship creates crosscultural ministry partnerships with churches and leaders in Europe and North America. AMI missionaries serve alongside local Christians to share gifts, reach youth, renew and equip leaders and provide practical help. Matt and Lea Edminster serve in Estonia to support and strengthen existing churches. Matt is an ordained minister in the PC(USA). Alternative Missions does this by recruiting teams for short-term missions and recruiting and training missionaries for long-term missions. Northminster mission teams have gone to Costa Rica and Honduras. Northminster partners with Joe and Averyl Morris, who serve refugee and AIDS-affected communities in South Africa and Zimbabwe. 7 Amor Ministries This ministry began building houses for impoverished Mexican families along the U.S./ Mexican border nearly 30 years ago. Over 16,000 homes have been built by over 300,000 volunteers on mission trips from 7,000 churches. Amor s vision is to transform lives by building the Kingdom one family at a time. A mission team from Northminster has annually gone to Puerto Peñasco for over 13 years to build homes and church classrooms and to serve children and youth. Contact: Andrea Imel ( , ext. 135) NPC contact: John Balentine ( ) Compassion International This Christian child advocacy ministry allows individuals to sponsor a child in one of 25 countries so that children might know release from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty. Many individuals at Northminster sponsor a Compassion child. Northminster s mid high and children s ministries both sponsor youths in Ethiopia. NPC contact: Howard & Helen Lindberg ( ) or lindbergho@aol.com Frontera de Cristo Located in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico and Douglas, Arizona, Frontera de Cristo shares the good news of Jesus Christ in word and deed through six areas of ministry: new church development, health ministry, family ministry, mission education, the New Hope Community, and the Just Trade Center. 8 International Justice Mission This human rights group leads international efforts to seek justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals have a presence in Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, India, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Bolivia, Guatemala, Honduras and Peru and are exploring the possibility of expanding into Ethiopia. NPC contact: Karna Walter ( ) Just Coffee/Café Justo Seeking to faithfully respond to the current Mexico to U.S. labor migration crisis, this farmer-owned cooperative in Salvador Urbina, Chiapas, Mexico sells their organic, shade-grown, Fair Trade Certified coffee directly to customers. This business practice allows farmers to stay on their land and keep families together. Just Coffee may be purchased at in the Church Office at NPC. Contact: Adrian Gonzalez ( and ) NPC contact: Jeff Krongaard ( ) Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship (PFF) Working with Presbyterian congregations throughout the United States, PFF helps churches get involved in establishing indigenous congregations among unreached people groups. Northminster, along with other Presbyterian churches, is partnering with PFF and Light of Hope Ministries in Ethiopia in outreach to the Arssi Oromo people in Muslim villages by building schools and supporting teachers. 9 NPC-CHiAPAS NPC-Chiapas is a new collaborative opportunity with a Presbyterian church in the state of Chiapas in (Southern) Mexico. Iglesia Nacional Presbiteriana Dios con Nosotros located in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico is an established fellowship we have begun a relationship with, with the goal of working collaborative binational mission opportunities on both sides of the border. We are currently building relationships between the two churches and exploring what God has planned for this ministry. Initial thoughts of joint efforts might include the areas of children's ministries, music ministry, cross border internships, building projects, health ministries and binational teaching opportunities. DcN (Dios con Nosotros) will be visiting Northminster and Arizona from September 5 14, A team from NPC visited DcN and Chiapas in June of NPC Contact: Jeff Krongaard ( ) Wycliffe Bible Translators Approximately 200 million people do not have the Bible in their own language. Wycliffe s vision is to see that the Bible is accessible to all people in the language they understand best. John and Shevawn Ramsey recruit Bible translators for the next generation by leading college students and young adults on short term mission trips, connecting them with crosscultural translation, linguistics, literacy work and scripture promotion in Ghana, West Africa. 10 Disaster Relief Small teams of volunteers go to areas in our nation that have experienced a natural disaster to rebuild/repair homes of people who have been affected. We work through PDA (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance) as well as local churches. 11 High School Mission Experiences During the summer, high school youth have had the opportunity to participate in mission trips to places such as the Yucatan Peninsula, Honduras, inner city Los Angeles, Silver City, NM and Tuba City on the Navajo Nation.
