Someone asked Why should we continue to have Masses said for someone we believe is with God in heaven? Masses and prayers can simply express our thanks and praise to God for the life of a person we have loved and still love. Obviously, these Masses are expressions of their faith and hope, a part of their remembering. Sound Catholic theology speaks of the Communion of Saints: our prayers for those who have gone before us is a concrete expression of that mystery of faith.
3 November 2, 2014 St. Brigid Church, Meadville, PA Page Three THANKSGIVING BASKETS ALTAR ROSARY MEETING is planned for next Tuesday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m. in our social hall. It is open to all women of the parish. Altar Rosary Society's main function is taking care of and providing for the sanctuary. Each month women volunteer to clean the sanctuary and launder the linens that are used during Mass. Fundraising projects are conducted for the purpose of buying needed sanctuary items. "... responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation..." Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship Visit: faithful-citizenship/ By our baptism, Catholics are committed to following Jesus Christ and to be "salt for the earth, light for the nations." As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, "It is necessary that all participate, according to his position and role, in promoting the common good. This is inherent in the dignity of the human person... As far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life" (nos ). Get the facts visit: candidates-for-governor/ THANK YOU...for your donations during October of items in the baby crib for Respect Life month. They are very much appreciated. Janet Stets & Carole Tidball THANK YOU...the Pregnancy Center exists because of the goodness of the Lord. He uses His people to supply the items we need to minister to the clients He sends to our doors. Without His people, we would have little help to offer. But thanks be to God, people like you serve Him by using your resources to provide baby items. Women have turned from abortion because they find that help is available here. We would like to thank you for your recent donation of children s items. Your help was greatly appreciated. You will bless many lives in Jesus name. Pregnancy Center of Meadville Help provide Thanksgiving Dinner for our needy parishioners. Bring your food donations to our church office or to Mass by Sunday Nov. 16th bring items that are nonperishable such as sweet potatoes/yams, boxed or canned potatoes, canned vegetables, rice, noodles, tuna, Bisquick, boxed stuffing, applesauce, fruits, & gravy. Parishioners who would like a basket should call the office now at Pickup is Monday, Nov. 24th. Turkeys and other perishable items will be purchased by us; however, if you do plan to donate a turkey call us in advance to let us know. Remember that the Thanksgiving Day envelope helps buy turkeys and helps replenish the Pastors Fund for the needy. PARENT BAPTISM PROGRAM Session will be held on Tuesday evening, Nov. 4th from 6:30-8:30 PM. Parents preparing for the baptism of their child must attend. Godparents are welcome and encouraged to participate. Expectant parents may wish to come prior to the birth of their child. To register call National Donor Sabbath brings together religious & transplant communities to raise awareness of the urgent need for organ and tissue donors and to dispel their fears. Catholics view organ/tissue donation as an act of charity, love & self-sacrifice. It is morally and ethically acceptable. Pope John Paul II had stated, "The Catholic Church would promote the fact that there is a need for organ donors & that Christians should accept this as a challenge to their generosity & fraternal love' so long as ethical principles are followed." State your donation intent on your Driver s License. Fill out a donor card and carry it in your wallet. Download and print an organ donor card at Tell your family & loved ones that you want to be a donor. Tell your physician & lawyer that you would like to be a donor. Become a regular blood donor.
4 Page Four St. Brigid Church, Meadville, Pennsylvania November 2, 2014 Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed All Souls Day For those of Mexican heritage, November 2 means celebration of el Dia de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. One of the most important days of the year for many, they join All Saints and All Souls together, visiting the graves of babies and children on All Saints, since they are santitos (little saints) or angelitos (little angels). Flowers, their favorite toys, favorite music, and so on, are taken to them. The following day, people spend time some of them all day at the cemetery with their loved ones who have died. From the ancient customs of the Indians the families pray, talk with them, and take them their favorite food. It is a most solemn but joyful day. It is a day to celebrate Christ s victory over death: Death, where is your sting? There is a mocking of death as people make skeletons, candy that represents death, and Pan de los Muertos (bread of the dead) and consume them in a kind of role reversal. One of the customs is to build an altarcito (little altar) where one places mementos and pictures of those who have died. There are also favorite foods, candles, statues or pictures of favorite saints, books, and Bibles. Some parishes have begun to build an altarcito where all parishioners can join in honoring the deceased. A remembrance book can be placed to write names in. The altarcito is traditionally left up for the month of November. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
