1 March 2018 Fairview United Methodist Church Maryville, Tennessee March 25, 2018 March 31, 2018 From the Pastor s Desk It s hard to believe we are almost to Palm Sunday. It seems like such a short time ago we were experiencing Ash Wednesday, beginning the sermon series: Helping People Follow Jesus...By Following Jesus, but here we are. We ve covered a lot of ground as we have sought to live consistently, perhaps for the first time ever, with a set of spiritual practices provided in our Experiential Calendar. How have you done with these practices? How have you done keeping a Holy Lent? In recent weeks we ve taught, as well as engaged in, the practices of: Confession, Prayer, Fasting, Generosity, Rest, Encouragement, and Silence. So, this Sunday, on Palm Sunday, we re going to be talking about Silence. Can you feel the tension already? Palm Sunday is upbeat, it is celebratory, and yet the remaining spiritual practice invites us to engage in silence. I want to invite you to hold the tension lightly, as though it were something valuable, if not fragile. For this Sunday is not only about the great celebration as Jesus enters Jerusalem, the mood of the day soon moves to His Passion, for Jesus knows what lies ahead even if those around Him do not. It s a hard leap for some; so hard, that we embrace the joy of Palm Sunday and Easter, but never allow ourselves to experience what is in between, His Passion; especially, as we observe it on Maundy Thursday evening and Good Friday at noon. The tension is there. One writer puts it this way: Jesus suffered. Jesus died. He really did. It was a ferocious death with all the powers of hell amassed against the one good and loving person who ever lived. I believe the spiritual practice of Silence fits well with the tension of Palm/Passion Sunday, for when we see Jesus in the gospels dealing with the hard stuff of His life, He often grows silent. He often withdraws to some quiet place. Jesus doesn t stay in Jerusalem during Holy Week/Passover, he withdraws daily from the chaos to a quieter village outside of Jerusalem. Jesus doesn t stay in the Upper Room following the Passover meal, but he withdraws to a quiet garden to pray passionately to His Father. Jesus models for his disciples, and for us periods of silence and solitude that enable Him to stay connected to God s plan for His life, so that we might recognize and value such practices for our own lives. Jesus allows for time and space when He can listen in order to stay focused on His mission! When we are navigating the chaos of our own lives, we have to engage in these same practices that enable us to stay connected to God s plan and purpose for our lives. We say it like this: I have my quiet time, which highlights silence before the Lord. We say, I have time alone with God, which emphasizes our need for solitude. Holy Week is just ahead. May you likewise allow for time and space, and silence and solitude in which you too can listen to God. With my love and prayers, Pastor Mickey

3 - It s a Fairview tradition: On Palm Sunday the children and the choir will lead us in waving the palms and on Easter Sunday we will ring in the Good News of the resurrection! Bring a bell on Easter cow bells, dinner bells, anything in between! Let s ring in the Good News of Easter "The sign-up sheets for the Easter lilies and for the 2018 altar flowers will be at the welcome desk in the Great Hall. The Easter lilies this year are $6.00. Tuesday Morning - Tina Spannbauer Jeremiah Melissa Spoelstra Begins Apr 3 at 9:30am Jeremiah offers women hope for living in an uncertain world by learning to navigate the challenges and circumstances of their lives. This six-week study examines God's words of instruction to His wayward people through the prophet Jeremiah, and provides women six guidelines for intentional living to overcome fear, worry, and doubt as they surrender their wills to God's and put their hope in Him alone. Combining rich study of the Book of Jeremiah with practical life application that resonates with the realities and experiences of today's women, this study inspires all women to dare to hope, remembering that God is rich in mercy and love and has good plans for us.
