Our lives have been incredibly busy since we arrived the beginning of November. We have sat down a number of times to write this newsletter but have never been able to finish it due to time constraints and extremely slow internet. Ever since our arrival it seems that we have been fixing things. The airbase has been without staffing now for a period of time especially the house that we are living in and so many things have fallen into disrepair. Things are improving though and we are becoming more comfortable in our new environment. Our truck has given us a lot of trouble since it has not had much maintenance over the past few years. We have spent over $2000 on repairs and are still 1

2 having issues with the brakes. We were almost left stranded once when the front wheel bearing failed on our first trip to Puerto Cabezas. One thing we were unprepared for was the relentless attack of mosquitoes, flies, and bugs in general. In the evening the constant drone of mosquitoes followed us where ever we went. We would take refuge inside the mosquito nets over our beds but we were always full of bug bites. We were thankful when we would have to make a trip to Puerto Cabezas where we would stay on the compound of the Verbo Mission in their airconditioned housing. After a few visits we became acquainted with Pastor Earl Bowie and his wife Damaris. When they learned that our house was not bug proof they promised to send out a team of workers to see what they could do. We were so amazed when a group of eight men came with a truck and trailer. For just the cost of materials and fuel they were able to bug proof the two homes on our air base. They stayed three days and worked very hard. We have been so blessed and encouraged by these humble workers. 2

3 We enjoyed Christmas dinner with the Lipke's on our new screened in veranda. Workers from the Verbo Mission after they bug-proofed our homes. Melanie helping out with a lunch program for over 600 children Bill Patterson from Wings of Hope working on the airplane with Norman. During the first half of December Bill Patterson, a Wings of Hope mechanic, was here to do the annual inspection on our airplane. We worked together 3

4 checking all the various systems of the airplane. The plane is in good condition but we are just waiting for a few parts that were not available here in Nicaragua. The beginning of January another pilot / mechanic, TJ Stewart, will be here to help install the remaining parts and do some initial flights with Norman. A highlight of the month was distributing a 25 pound bag of flour to each family in the neighboring village of Tronquera. Many of you donated towards this project and we are so grateful. We were able to have a Christ centered program in our church before distributing the flour. The final exciting piece of news that we would like to share is that a new family has come to help us. The Lipke's have joined us from British Columbia, Canada and will be here until the beginning of April. They have already been a big help and have adapted well to their new home. The children have really enjoyed playing together and swimming in the pond. We welcome Courtney, Corson, Denika and Sabrea Lipke to Tronquera. As part of our electric project we built an electric room / storage area. 4

Health and strength during our first two months in Nicaragua. Completing the annual on the airplane. Only a few outstanding items that will be taken care of in January TJ Stewart who will be coming in January to help reinitiate flight operations. Electricity that is now available on our property. Verbo Mission and their help in bug proofing our homes. Those who are faithfully supporting us financially. 6 Please pray for: Our mission truck. We are still having problems with the brakes. A reliable internet connection which we haven t been able to get working yet. This is critical so we will be able to work efficiently. The civil aviation authorities in Nicaragua who grant us permission to fly. We have submitted requests for the upcoming year for our existing airplane and the new Cessna 182 that will be coming in the new year. Financial resources to meet our needs. Funds are needed to cover the electrical installation, materials purchased to bug-proof the two homes and for our day to day expenses.
