1 Johnson City District of the United Methodist Church J une L I V I N G S A N C T U A R I E S Lord Prepare Me...To Be a Living Sanctuary For You. BOLDLY, PASSIONATELY, JOYFULLY P A RT IC I PAT IN G I N A N N UA L C O N F ER EN C E This June, 66 Laity and 70 active and retired Clergy from the Johnson City District attended the Holston Annual Conference at Lake Junaluska, NC. While complete news on the business, celebrations, and fellowship of Annual Conference is available in the June 29 issue of The Call, we would like to highlight the involvement of Clergy and Laity from the Johnson City District in this article. The theme of this year s Annual Conference was Boldly, Passionately and Joyfully Making Disciples of Jesus Christ! Folks from the Johnson City District played an active role in living out that theme, participating in worship, celebrating outreach, being part of the election process, discussing and voting on resolutions, sharing lighthearted moments, and celebrating retirement, ordination and commissioning for ministry. And a child shall lead them. The 2007 Holston Annual Conference officially began at 6:30 pm on Sunday, June 10, with the lighting of the Christ Candle by Ernestine Siebo of Gray UMC. Ernestine is the 11 year old daughter of Gray s associate pastor, Samuel Siebo. During the 7:30 pm Service of Remembrance, 12 year old Ming Wilson of Jonesborough UMC wowed the congregation with a selection of piano solos as communion was served. More Gray matters Gray UMC was also represented during the 7:15 pm musical break by the Gray UMC Men s Quintet who belted out several favorites such as I Saw the Light. On Monday morning, Samuel Siebo himself was at the forefront, leading the 7:45 am Worship Service in the Memorial Chapel. Celebrating Outreach and Missions A ministry located in the Johnson City District, Neighborhood Reconciliation Services, was featured in the Outreach/Advocacy Team s Celebration of Ministry Monday afternoon. This program helps juvenile offenders make amends for their actions through a process of restorative justice, and was recently featured in articles published in the Johnson City Press and The Call. Another outreach program in the Johnson City District, the Community Help Center, was highlighted in a video shown on Wednesday of Lay Ministries across the Conference. On Monday morning, the conference celebrated a record 6,300 mission kits that were gathered in this year s hands-on mission project. The churches of the Johnson City District collected 467 Teacher Kits to be sent to Liberia. Milestones in ministry On Monday evening, several clergy from the district were part of the Ordination Service. Rance Edwards, newly appointed pastor of Mt. Carmel and Seviers, and Clyde Hester, pastor of Bethesda and Eden, were ordained as Deacons in (Continued on page 4) I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : In Mission Together news 2 News & Views from Randy Frye 3 Living Marketplace 3 District Day of Discipleship 5-6 HCSA Fall Conference 7 Local Missions - IHN 7 E E B C I V CO M IN G IN N OV E M BE R The Johnson City District will play host to United Methodists from across the United States and Europe November 1-3, The fourth annual Eastern Europe and Balkan Consultation will be co-sponsored by the Global Board of Ministries and World Evangelism and will celebrate partnerships between US and European churches. She wrote about the Holston Conference Youth in Mission Team that traveled to the Czech Republic earlier this month. This is just to share my joy. I have come from Mikulov where I met Dan Gray and his team and the local church. We had a very good time during a barbecue at the place where they had worked. Rev. Michal Kostka told me the team members were excellent, hard working, pleasant manners. They did a good job cleaning the building in Mikulov. You may remember - the Czech UMC bought an old, small factory for the Mikulov UMC in October It is an ambitious project. The local church alone would not be able to cover the costs, and our banks do not give a loan to churches, because we are not a reliable partner they say. We do not create profit. Anyway, the whole Czech church, as a sign of solidarity, gathered the needed money and bought a building. The project was agreed as a priority of the Czech church, and we look forward to the reconstructed church facilities. We laugh a little bit - the situation reminds us of the foundry John Wesley bought the other day... Your youth team participated at the very beginning of the reconstruction, and we all are grateful for it. They represented Holston Conference very well. Editors Note: The congregation mentioned in Jana s letter, Mikulov UMC, will be participating in Vacation Bible School led by one of the Volunteer in Mission teams mentioned in the article below. T H RE E VBS TE AM S T RAV EL I NG TO C Z EC H R EP BU LI C In the month of July, three Volunteer in Mission teams from the Johnson City District will travel to the Czech Republic to lead Vacation Bible School. Leaving July 1, two teams led by Jane Taylor and Betty Barton will travel to Blansko and Poust. Other members of these teams are Mary K. Briggs, Charlene Cutshall, Rebecca Edwards, Linda Key, Dennis Loy, Andrew and Julia Tolley, and Deban Yeomans. These two teams will spend one week traveling together in Holland, Belgium and the Czech Republic, then will go to their separate locations for VBS. They will return to the US on July 16 after a brief stay in Vienna, where they will worship at the English Speaking UMC, pastored by Holston clergy member Laura Trent. Phyllis Hankins will lead a third team traveling to Tachov July She is joined by Jan Goodsell, Dan Wolfe, and Anna Russell. The Tachov and Poust teams will use the 2006 Cokesbury VBS program, Adventure of the Treasure Seekers. The Blansko team will use this year s program, Lift Off. To follow the journey of the Poust and Blansko teams and to download a prayer calendar for their trip, visit the online Trip Journal on the District web page at: Please be in prayer for all of these teams as they spread God s word in a foreign land.

3 Living Sanctuaries Page 3 There is an old story about a lighthouse keeper who received his supply of oil once a month to keep the light burning. Not being far from shore, he had frequent guests. One night a woman begged for some oil to keep her family warm. Another time a father asked for some oil to use in his lamp. Another man needed some oil to lubricate a wheel. Since all of the requests seemed legitimate, the N E WS AN D V I EW S B Y lighthouse keeper tried to please them all. It wasn t long, however, before the oil was gone and the beacon went out. That night a ship wrecked along the rocky coastline and lives were lost. During the investigation, the lighthouse keeper was very repentant. To his excuses and pleading, however, the reply was simple: You were given oil for one purpose to keep that light burning! As we enter a new conference year, I am reminded again how critical it is for the church to keep its focus in mind and let nothing deter our commitment to it. Boldly, Passionately, Joyfully making disciples of Jesus Christ is the vision that Holston Conference has embraced. While there are many activities in which we can be involved R A N D Y F R Y E and many good programs our churches could offer, do we have that single vision in mind? In our partnership with the Czech UMC, in our Camp Meeting, Vacation Bible Schools, Sunday morning worship, ministries among the poor and ministries with youth, and Volunteer in Mission opportunities, is that the goal for which we are striving? Are we willing to put all of our energies and resources into the task of bringing people to a new, saving relationship with Christ? We are called together as the church for one purpose to keep the light of God s redemptive love shining. May it shine brightly in all 66 churches of the Johnson City District this year. L I V IN G MA RK ET PL A C E - J O B S, E V E N T S, B U Y A N D S E L L, D O N A T E The new Holston Conference Center in Alcoa will have an Open House Sunday, September 30, 2:00 to 5:00 pm. 4 Page 4 June 2007 (Continued from page 1) Annual Conference Associate Membership. Ordained as Elders in Full Connection that evening were: Todd Adams, the new pastor at Bluff City UMC; Kevin Holmes, who is appointed to attend school in the Chaplaincy program at Mountain Home VA Center; Paul Seay, associate pastor of Wesley Memorial UMC; and Lon Tobin, pastor of East Pine Grove Park UMC. Doug Grove- DeJarnett of Munsey Memorial was the Director of Liturgy and Assisting Deacon for the Bishop during this moving service. Later in the week, Nancy Eastridge, the new associate pastor at Munsey Memorial was commissioned as a Probationary Elder, and Local Pastor Licenses were presented to Linda Krauss, newly appointed to Liberty Hill UMC, and Rex Hill, pastor of Limestone Cove UMC. Garland James, the new pastor of Grace UMC, was recognized as one of sixteen clergy moving into a retired relationship with the conference. Endless elections Every four years, much of the time at Annual Conference is spent electing delegates for General and Jurisdictional Conferences, and this year was no exception. Throughout conference, business sessions and reports were interrupted by ballot readings and voting. Prolonging the process were countless invalid ballots each reading, caused by members who continued to voting for persons already elected, circling the nominee s numbers instead of shading them in, or voting for too many people. Despite the difficulties encountered in voting, District Superintendent Randy Frye was elected to serve as a Clergy Delegate and Paul Brown, Jr. of Munsey Memorial UMC was elected to serve as a Lay Delegate for the 2008 General and Jurisdictional Conferences. Patty Muse, from Munsey Memorial UMC was elected as an Alternate Lay Delegate for Jurisdictional Conference. Hard working folks Also highly visible throughout conference was Linda Bird Wright, pastor of Unicoi UMC, who served as part of the secretarial staff. During business sessions, she was seated on stage with Bishop Swanson and Conference Secretary Grady Winegar, keeping a record of the proceedings. The following persons from the Johnson City District served as ushers and tellers, distributing materials and dashing to and fro during the balloting process to hand out and collect ballots: Doug Grove- DeJarnett, Munsey Memorial UMC; Dennis Milligan, who has just moved from Limestone and Greenwood; Lynice Broyles, Sulphur Springs UMC; Art Eckerson, First UMC, Johnson City; and Andrew Tolley, Boones Creek UMC. Laity and Clergy from the Johnson City District who registered on Sunday were greeted by a familiar face, Johnson City Administrative Assistant Betty Barton. Recognition for District churches The following Johnson City District churches were honored as Churches of Excellence in Evangelism: Gold Cherokee, Limestone Cove, Taylor Memorial, Telford; Silver Fairview, First Elizabethton, Grace, St. Paul; Bronze Austin Springs, Bluff City, Chuckey, Ebenezer, Edgefield, Jearoldstown, Limestone, Sulphur Springs, Mt. Wesley, Union Temple, Wesley Memorial; Honorable Mention Clear Springs, Jonesborough, Gray, Marvin s Chapel, Milburnton, New Victory, Otterbein, Piney Flats, Watauga Point. Recognized as 2006 Five Star Churches were: Asbury, Bethesda, Bluff City, Cedar Grove, Chuckey, Clear Springs, Edgefield, Embreeville, Enterprise, Fairview, First Elizabethton, Hunter, Jonesborough, Marvin s Chapel, Milburnton, Munsey Memorial, Piney Flats, Seviers, Slagles, Taylor Memorial, Telford, Unicoi, Union Temple, Valley Forge, and Valley View. A time to laugh As another Annual Conference wound down on Wednesday, Charles Maynard of Wesley Memorial UMC shared A Humorous Look at Ourselves poking fun at the voting process and other amusing incidents throughout conference. During the traditional Sending Forth Service on Wednesday afternoon, Johnson City District Lay Leader Leanna Robertson, Cherokee UMC, served as a liturgist. Before we knew it, another Annual Conference had come and gone, but all who attended will long remember the bold, passionate and joy-filled days spent together at Lake Junaluska. 6 Church Revitalization: Natural Church Development Learn about the NCD process and how it can help you scientifically define your church s strengths and weaknesses and make 3-5 intentional plans over one year to improve your weakest area. Churches that have participated in this program have seen phenomenal growth. Led by Rev. Richard Edwards, Conference Director of Congregational Development and Revitalization. Church Finance: More Than Passing the Plate Taking up the offering...is it merely the act of "passing the plate?" Or is the offering in a worship service a part of the spiritual discipline of Christian practice? Far from being a necessary evil, the offering is an integral part of worship, a spiritual act, and an expression of joy. We will look at church finance as an essential act of ministry, and a means of grace and growth in our Christian journey. Led by Rev. Bill Kilday, Conference Director of Stewardship. Missions: Money Helps But Action is Better! Local, National and Global Missions are an important part of the ministry of our Church, and it is more than providing financial support. Learn how to develop and implement your church s vision for missions and then leap into action! Led by Dr. Jerry Russell, Pastor, Fairview UMC, Maryville. Visioning: What is God s Vision for Your Church? The Vision Tool for Local Churches is available to help your local church answer that question. This is a biblically based process to help a local church study and discern what God is calling that church to be and to do in its community. Understanding that making disciples of Jesus Christ is our United Methodist mission statement, this tool builds on that mission and provides churches a means to discern a future vision. Led by Anne Travis, Conference Director of Connectional Ministries. Worship: Put Worship Back in Your Service In this workshop we will examine ways to move beyond the routine of weekly worship in order to experience an hour of divine encounter. Led by Wesley Rouse, Minister of Music at Fairview UMC, Maryville. District Day of Discipleship 8:30 am to 2:15 pm Saturday, August 11, 2007 Cherokee UMC Registration Fees: Early Bird Registration (thru July 16) is $10. After July 16, registration is $15. Fees cover the cost of workshops, lunch and refreshments. Workshop Descriptions Each workshop will be offered twice (9:45 and 11:00) Communications: Vital Ministry in a High Tech World How do churches connect with their members and with the outside world? How can churches incorporate technology to produce effective media experiences? This workshop will look at various types of media and resources that are available and how you can jump-start your church by making an impact on a multimedia-driven culture. Led by Donna Hankins, Conference Multimedia Coordinator. Children s Ministry: Beyond the Walls In a familiar church tune we sing out, I am the church! You are the church! We are the church together! But how are you really the Church outside the walls of your church building? How are you teaching the children of your church to demonstrate Christian love in your neighborhood? Greater community? And beyond your District? Come discuss and think about the possibilities for helping children be in mission service and sharing God s great love with others. Led by Anita Henderlight, Conference Coordinator of Children s Ministries. Young Adult Ministry: The Forgotten Generation This workshop considers how and to what degree the church must continue to retool young adult ministries. We will jump into the emerging conversation about embracing what is becoming the most misunderstood and disenfranchised demographic group in our communities. Led by Rev. Larry Trotter, Associate Pastor, Concord UMC, Knoxville. Youth Ministry: No Gym? No Problem! Is it possible to attract youth to your church if you don t have elaborate facilities like a gym or computer lab? How do you hold their interest and keep them coming back week after week? Hear tips from a youth leader who has experience building a youth program in the small church setting. Led by Bryan Orchard, Youth Director, Gray UMC (formerly of Fairview UMC, Jonesborough). See page 5 for additional info.

7 Living Sanctuaries Page 7 HCSA - I T I SN T JUST F OR S E C RETA RI E S Did you know that there is an organization that specifically meets the needs of church office staff in the Holston Conference? The Holston Conference Secretaries Association (HCSA) is designed to deepen spiritual understanding, improve performance, increase personal effectiveness, and update knowledge of modern technology to better equip United Methodist Church secretaries, administrative assistants, and office managers for ministry. HCSA offers a conference for office staff in September of each year. The dates for this year s conference are September The conference will be held at the Five Oaks Convention Center in Pigeon Forge. There will be six workshops offered along with some personal time for rest and relaxation. The workshop leaders come from all areas of conference ministry and include Ron Matthews, Gary Mauldin, Jay Garrison, and others. Pastors and PPR committees are encouraged to consider providing their office personnel, whether full or part time, paid or volunteer, the opportunity to attend this exciting conference. Registration fees are only $72 - $90 (based on single or double room occupancy) and cover lodging, meals, snacks, and conference materials. Membership dues for HCSA (required for those attending the conference) are an additional $15 per year. Additional information and registration forms are available at the District Office. Deadline for registration is August 20. HCSA is a chapter of the national organization Professional Association of United Church Secretaries (PAUMCS). WH AT S HA PPE NI NG I N L OCAL M I SSI ONS I N T E R F A I T H H O S P I T A L I T Y N E T W O R K O F G R E A T E R J C May 4, 2007 Dear Friends of the Johnson City District of the UMC, It was wonderful to receive your gift of $750 in April and we want you to know how very much we appreciate your support of this ministry. All gifts contribute to the empowerment of homeless families working hard to return to independent living. On Monday of this week, two families did just that. A mother and her two young daughters moved into their own apartment. While they were here, the mother trained and studied for her CAN certificate and passed the state test. She is now employed fulltime. She is also registered to begin classes at Northeast State this summer with the goal of going into physical therapy. Another mother with four children also moved into housing. She too is employed full-time in the food service at the Millennium Centre. For the past nine months we have had two interns from the Social Work Master s program at ETSU and one intern from Emmanuel School of Religion. This is their last week and we will really miss Luke, Erin and Kristin. They are like staff to us at this point. We wish them well as they move forward in their education. We are extremely excited to have a new part-time case manager come on staff. Leyla Haverlock is a welcome addition to our staff. She will be responsible for working with families on their goals and objectives, assisting them with accomplishing their plans and providing them opportunities of great value. Patsy will now be able to focus a greater portion of her time on congregations and volunteers. Now that Leyla is here, we have launched our newly revised Family Mentoring Program. This program assigns trained, volunteer mentors to families moving out of the program and into their own housing. We feel this mentoring relationship will enhance the stability of families during the first year after leaving IHN. If you know of volunteers who would like to be mentors, send them our way! One of our IHN congregations is providing 10 scholarships for IHN children, ages 8-11, to attend summer camp. That will be a wonderful experience for these children. Many other great things are happening at IHN and we are grateful for your support and prayers. Shalom, Brian J Rosecrance Executive Director IHN is one of the non-profit agencies that receives funding from the Johnson City District budget each year. 47% of the Fair Share Apportionment that each church pays goes to fund programs like IHN UM ME N GAT HE RI NG Men of all ages are welcome to Fuel the Fire at Wheeler UMC in Blountville, Tennessee on August 17 & 18. Sponsored by the Holston Conference United Methodist Men, this will include worship, music, Bible Study, and Holy Communion. A registration fee of $25 may be paid with registration by mail or at the gathering. The fee includes cost of lunch and refreshments. Attendees are encouraged to bring an unchurched friend and be doubly blessed. For more information contact Nathaniel Watson at
