In fact, I m almost in panic mode. On November 5, I m having my rotator cuff in my left shoulder repaired. The surgery itself isn t such a big deal. This will be my 14th if I remember them all. I ve even had the same shoulder operated on before. But, that was 17 years ago when my body healed more quickly. So now I am frantically trying to get everything done that requires the use of my dominant arm (I m left handed). I m trying to finish projects around the house and yard and get things organized for worship and Charge Conference in the coming weeks. Regardless of how prepared I am, come November 5, I will have surgery and the projection of not being able to do a lot of things I like (and need) to do will become reality. As I have prepared for this surgery, I have thought a lot about time, priorities, and health issues. I d really like to put the operation off until March as it is going to severely restrict my winter and spring activities. However, I ve decided that getting my shoulder fixed before I damage it even more is more important than any other consideration. Again thinking about more important things, I ve thought a great deal about my spiritual health. One s spirituality is one of those priorities that often gets more lip service than actual attention. When the time is right When I get through with When I have some free time You can finish the statements. Early in Jesus public ministry a teacher of the law came to him and said, Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go. 20 Jesus replied, Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head. 21 Another disciple said to him, Lord, first let me go and bury my father. 22 But Jesus told him, Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead (Matthew 8:19-22, NIV). Obviously, we are not the first generation to make excuses for delaying our response to follow Jesus. We have no corner on the market of putting off making our relationship with God through Jesus Christ the number one priority it deserves. Thus, we go on living as if we have an infinite amount of time to prepare for the inevitability of facing our Maker on the day of our judgment. And when that day comes, there will be no opportunity to ask for more time. I have a date certain for my shoulder surgery. I have no idea whether my last day here on earth is today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, next decade, or next century (okay, that s a bit of a stretch). Therefore, the only practical thing for me to do is to be right with God today and everyday. I heard someone say many years ago, Live each day prepared as if it is your last and live each day as if you will have thousands more. I think that is some pretty decent advice. If we are prepared today to enter eternity and if we are also preparing for our future here on earth, either way we are ready for what may come. With an eternity in Heaven as our goal, we get a blessed life here on earth thrown in as well. I hope you will think about your own relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I pray that a right relationship with God is your highest priority. God bless you in your journey of faith! In His Love,

2 DISCIPLESHIP PASTOR ALWAYS OPEN TO LEARNING! As many of you know, Pastor Scott and I attempt to attend the Bishops School of Ministry each year at Springmaid Beach. Bishop's School of Ministry is a Continuing Education opportunity extended to all clergy of the South Carolina Conference. I would describe it as kind of a...mini Annual Conference (but much more fun)! Throughout the 3-day event, various speakers offer presentations and workshops on a variety of insights related to the main theme of the Conference. This year's theme was: Invitation to a Changed Life: Moving Towards Clergy Excellence. The event begins on Monday night with a banquet, at which the Bishop delivers the keynote address. The following day, the first full day of the Conference, includes keynote presentations followed by smaller workshops. Our keynote speaker on Monday morning was an individual named Mark Tidsworth, who coaches, consults and trains corporate leaders. Monday afternoon's speaker was Dr. Larry Ousley, a United Methodist Life Coach. The workshops I chose to attend on Monday included a presentation on witnessing effectively to a Post-Modern world, along with an afternoon workshop addressing issues of effective leadership in the midst of conflict. The second day of the Conference brought a keynote address by Dr. Anne Burkholder, who has served as Pastor and District Superintendent in the Florida Conference, and is currently doing research on pastoral ethics and United Methodist Polity in conjunction with Emory, the institution from which she earned her PhD. Dr. Burkholder also led the Tuesday afternoon workshop, and then we concluded the Conference with a Service of Communion. 1 1/2 CEU's are granted to each participant who attends. But more importantly than the continuing education credit, in my opinion, is the insight and NEW information which is gleaned from these Conference opportunities. In order to keep the church alive and active and relevant to what is happening in today's world, clergy need to be informed, educated and inspired! And that's what Bishop's School has to offer! It's also nice to re-connect and "catchup" with clergy colleagues around the Conference in the midst of this beautiful oceanfront setting. Thanks to all of you for making these continuing education opportunities possible by your financial gifts as well as your forgiveness of the time involved away from the parish setting in order to attend. Keep on Learning! Pastor Kim PAGE 2 We had 8 ladies attend the Annual District Conference and they brought back the certificates and awards that YOUR unit earned; including the 5 Star Award. Next year in October 2013, we will be hosting that Annual Conference. Mark it on your calendar. I want to thank you UMW members AND other church members for the baked goods and time donated to the Bake Sale. We could not have done it without all the help that we received. We can support so many local missions because of you. We have our General Meeting on November 10. During this meeting we will be discussing some end of the year issues. One of these is electing new officers. Sara Beck and I have decided to resign from our positions: President and Vice President. We are not going any where, but have other obligations to perform in the church and will continue to support our circles and the general unit. The UMW General budget for 2013 is also another topic that will need your discussion. Please pray about the business dealings and attend to participate in the discussion. 4 A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR OF CARE AND VISITATION PAGE 4 Fall has arrived and the air is fresh and beautiful. Everyone is hustling around getting busier and busier for whatever... SURFSIDE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH NOVEMBER SPIRIT NIGHT MENU NOV. 7 COUNTRY FRIED STEAK/ WHITE PEPPER GRAVY MASHED POTATOES/GRAVY SUCCATASH APPLESAUCE ROLLS AND BUTTER DESSERT DRINK NOV. 14 NOV. 21 NOV. 28 BAKED HAM SCALLOPED POTATOES GREEN BEANS SLICED PEACHES ROLLS AND BUTTER DESSERT DRINK HAPPY THANKSGIVING STUFFED SHELLS/MEAT SAUCE SALAD BAR ROLLS AND BUTTER FRUIT COCKTAIL DESSERT DRINK NEW ADVENT STUDY FOR SPIRIT NIGHT! Beginning Wednesday, November 7th, a new Advent Study entitled...christmas is Not Your Birthday...will be offered during our Spirit Night gatherings. Every year, we say we're going to cut back, simplify and have a family Christmas that focuses on the real reason for the season - Jesus Christ. But then, the advertisements start, the children's lists grow, the parties get scheduled, and it becomes easier and easier to indulge our wants and whims. Overspending, overeating, materialism and busyness chronically rob us of our peace and joy...and they rob Jesus of his rightful role as the center of our celebration. You are invited to join us for this 7 week Advent study which will call each one of us to approach Christmas differently this year...and be transformed in the process! If you have the desire, this Christmas, to experience the peace of knowing that God is truly with us...to realize the joy of giving sacrificially...and to feel the love of a Savior who gave everything he had for us, then you will not want to miss this class! A Bible, a writing utensil and a notepad are the only things required to attend! We will meet in Room 8/10. Talk to Pastor Kim for more information. Here at Surfside United Methodist Church we are busy as well. I sometimes wonder how much we take notice and appreciate all that happens in OUR church. Just look at the back of the bulletin and see all the activities offered for people of all ages. But I think we need to look deeper into the life of our church. How many lives are being enriched by the "activities" we have. I was so thrilled to see that we took in 12 new members one week and another couple the next week. What a blessing for those 14 people, but more important what a blessing for the church. A church that adds people adds life to all that happens. This is the time of year we start looking for leaders and followers for next year. Be a giver for 2013, not just in pledges but with your gifts and graces God has blessed each of us with. Get to know people by attending worship, Wednesday night "Spirit Night" dinners, and small group classes throughout the week. There is so much more that could be said about Surfside United Methodist Church but I think you all get the message...i am the Church...You are the Church...We are the Church together, enriching the lives of all who participate. We are blessed...let's be a blessing to others. Lovingly and prayerfully, Pastor Pat

5 Jubilation Ringers Jubilation Ringers are busy preparing new music for our congregation. On November 11, we will ring Grace and Thanksgiving, as well as Now Thank We All Our God during both worship services. Spirit Singers Rehearsals are now extended on Wednesday evenings 6:45-9:00 pm, in order to provide enough rehearsal time for both Sunday anthems and our cantata. Our Christmas cantata will be presented with chamber orchestra during both worship services on Sunday, December 16. The work is Joseph Martin s Celebration of Carols, and tells the story of Christ's birth with beautiful arrangements and meaningful Scriptures. Come join us as we prepare this music filled with the spirit of joy and peace. Rehearsal of cantata music occurs at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. PREPARING THE WAY FOR ADVENT During the month of November, our Wednesday Morning Prayer and Bible Study group will conclude our Discipleship Study and move into a new course entitled...preparing the Way. Beginning Wednesday, November 14th at 10AM in the Fellowship Hall, we will examine how preparing for the coming of Christ should open our hearts and minds to hope, as well as to a deeper level of commitment to God and to our neighbor. Do you like to wait? Doctor's offices, traffic, grocery stores - waiting is seen as such wasted time! Yet, waiting doesn't have to be passive! Depending upon your perspective, waiting can be productive, IF we utilize our waiting time to allow God to prepare us for what is to come as we heed the call to...prepare the way...for the coming of Christ. Please join us each Wednesday morning as we begin to look forward, expectantly, to Christ's coming again...and as we prepare ourselves to be ready and available for Him. Talk to Pastor Kim for more information. FELLOWSHIP COFFEE TIME FOR NOVEMBER The Discovery Class will host coffee this month. 10 CONFIRMATION CONTINUES TO BE BUSY! Our class of 20 Confirmation students are already moving into our third month together! So far, we have studied the faith topics of creation and sin. We have examined these concepts from a Biblical, historical, contemporary and personal angle through class discussions, drawing activities, research exercises and the review of various handouts. We have also participated in one retreat where we experienced two small group worship celebrations, participated in some detailed Bible study activities, expressed some of our learnings through personal works of art, and, of course, ate snacks! In addition to our weekly Sunday morning classes, each Confirmand has chosen a Mentor with whom he or she is working on a personal basis. Also, our Confirmands have been participating in faith community service projects such as ushering, acolyting and working at the Pumpkin Patch. And, of course, the students have also been worshiping with us on a regular basis on Sunday mornings and/or Wednesday nights. We ask that you continue to pray for this great group of young Christians as they journey toward a new and personal understanding of their role as Christian believers. And please plan to join us on Sunday, January 13th, 2013 as we welcome our Confirmands into the fellowship of the Surfside UM Church! GRIEF SEMINAR FOR THE HOLIDAYS As you know, the Holidays are a time when the difficult emotions of grief hit even harder, and people need guidance and encouragement to make it through. Individuals traveling on a grief journey face new struggles as a result of the Holiday time. If you fall into this category, please plan to attend a special Holiday Grief Seminar at SUMC on Thursday, November 15th from 4PM-6PM in the Church Parlor. Those who attend this Surviving the Holidays Seminar will be exposed to wise and encouraging counsel. A 40 minute video will be shared which features reflections from people who've made it through the Holidays while dealing with heartache and loss. The video also presents insights from prominent Christian counselors and teachers. Discussion of the video and other grief issues will be included as part of the Seminar as well. And each participant will receive a Holiday Survival Guide to take home for further reference and guidance. There is no need to pre-register for this Seminar, simply join us on November 15th in the Church Parlor. This Seminar is presented by the Grief-Share Organization. Contact Pastor Kim for further information. PAGE 10 PRAYER SHAWLS CONTINUE TO BE A BLESSING! Spiritual struggles, hospital stays, grief journeys, organ transplants, cancer battles, kidney dialysis, alzheimers struggles, suffering children in Haiti, financial hurdles...these are just a few of the reasons people have chosen to give, and receive, prayer shawls. Our SUMC Prayer Shawls are available to any and all persons in need, from any church, neighborhood or country! The prayer shawls have been moved into the Volunteer Office, for easier access. Shawls can be found in the large, wheeled rubbermaid bins. Please help yourself to a shawl AND an accompanying prayer card. Also, please be sure to write down the name and address of the recipient (city and state only), the reason/cause for the prayer shawl gift, and the givers name...and slip this information under Pastor Kim's office door so it can be recorded in the Prayer Shawl file. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask Pastor Kim. And...keep on giving...please! THE CURE OFFERED THROUGH NOVEMBER Our current Grow Group entitled...the Cure for the Chronic Life...will continue to be offered through the month of November. Meeting every Tuesday at 2PM in the Church Parlor, The Cure is a small group discussion experience which has been dealing with the seven basic worries of living in crises, which include - meaningless relationships, the accumulation of mental, relational and emotional garbage, misguided priorities, the creation of idols/human gods, the trap between loneliness and self-sufficiency, participating in uncontrollable addictions, and taking on broken approaches to community. Please join us as we consider how to tackle these worries and begin to live a life in Christ, rather than crisis! The Cure for the Chronic Life provides a faith-filled journey AWAY from hopelessness. Please join us each week as we search to discover the power of redeeming love and focus on God's purpose in our lives. You are invited to bring a Bible, a writing utensil and a notepad to each class. Contact Pastor Kim for more information.

As we roll through October, the CDC has been preparing for the hot dog sale at the SUMC Fall Festival. Our parent volunteers did pumpkin decorating with our classes using pumpkins that we purchased at the Pumpkin Patch. We also took our classes out to the patch for story, snack, and a math and science lesson. We had a visit from the Surfside Fire Department. They spoke to the children about fire safety and prevention. Following their presentation, the children were able to get on the fire truck and sit in the back seat. Norm Hill was here to take fall pictures of our students and their siblings as well. As always, we will have our costume parade followed by the fall carnival sponsored by our parent volunteers on Halloween.
