This four-week class is for anyone who might have more questions about Christianity, our beliefs, and the ministry of our church. If you know someone who hasn t gone through Discover FBC, this would be a great opportunity to invite them to attend with you. Discover registration is online at fbc.org. 3 Looking Steve Bateman Ahead with Steve I write this month in defense of Southern Baptists and to ask you to pray for them. First Bible Church is not a Southern Baptist Church. We are a non-denominational church. But we are not anti-denominational and we pray for and work with any church that is committed to historic, apostolic Christianity as happy heirs of the Protestant Reformation. We may not agree on every single point of doctrine, but we are agreed on the essentials; the core doctrines. So you might wonder why I am writing about the Southern Baptists now. Here s why: In keeping with their tradition, Southern Baptists hold their annual meeting in June. This year it is June in Dallas. One item on their agenda is to elect a new president who will lead them for the next two years. In years past, these annual meetings have been notorious for controversy, but this year is shaping up to be one of the more divisive. We need to pray for them. In March, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention admitted he had been involved in an adulterous affair. In the last few days, the president of one of their flagship seminaries resigned his position when it became public that he counseled women who were being abused by their husbands to submit to it and pray. This unwise and unbiblical counsel incited an uprising of Southern Baptist women who signed a petition demanding his resignation. The leading candidate to be their next president is a man of godly character and integrity, J.D. Greear. But because he believes in God s sovereignty in all things, including salvation, his opponents have organized against him, mimicking the worldly political strategies of slander and character assassination. Never mind that great Baptists throughout history, from John Bunyan to William Carey to Charles Spurgeon, held the same convictions as J.D. Greear. This annual meeting is shaping up to be raucous and, frankly, sad. Al Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville says of this upcoming meeting, The Southern Baptist Convention is on trial and our public credibility is at stake. May God have mercy on us all. At 16 million, Southern Baptists represent the largest protestant denomination in the United States. As you travel on your vacation this summer, take note of this: wherever you go, Baptists have probably already been there, preaching the gospel and planting churches. In the urban centers of our nations, you can find a Baptist church. Travel the back roads into the smallest towns and farming communities, and you ll find a Baptist church where every Sunday morning, they open up a Bible and take it seriously. I thank God for Southern Baptists, and so should you. We need the Southern Baptists. Let us pray that on June 12-13, they all submit to the Bible they say they love. And while we are at it, let s pray that for us. FBC Newsletter 3 June 2018

4 W3 Grow & Go Opportunities Decatur Join us for a Painting Party at First Bible Church on Saturday, June 23rd, from 5-7pm with Catherine Grunschel. We ll be painting an 8x10 canvas focused on Psalm 23:1a, The Lord is my shepherd. Supplies are included and class is $20. To register, please send Diane Hubbard an at diane@fbc.org Bible Journaling Summer Workshop: The Bible Journaling class meets on Wednesday, June 13th from 10am until 2pm to learn art techniques for illustrating. We each bring a lunch dish to share. This is an open-house format, so drop in anytime between ten and two. Madison Madison Summer Suppers - Join us Wednesday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m. for supper at Zoe s Kitchen in the Target Shopping Center on University Drive in Huntsville. Come enjoy a time of fellowship and connect with the ladies of FBC! Sav-A-Life Pregnancy Center is a Christian, pro-life ministry proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and providing practical, emotional and spiritual assistance to women, men, and children who face pregnancy related issues, who are threatened by abortion or who suffer harm from abortion. Please help support the Baby Bottle Boomerang which began on Mother s Day and ends on Father s Day, June 17. Baby bottles are in the foyer and in the ABFs. Fill these bottles with coins, bills, or checks and place in the designated box in the foyer. You can also elect to give through the Baby Blessings program. Just put your check or cash in an envelope with your information on it and you ll receive a statement for tax purposes. 5 Summer Worship Schedule at the Family Worship will begin July 1 - August 5 During Family Worship, Sunday s Adult Bible Fellowships, Elementary Ministry and Student Ministry will not meet. The Field House Service will also not meet after June 10th. Please join us in the sanctuary at 9:15 or 10:45 for Sunday s Worship Service. Childcare for nursery both hours, not preschool. Summer Co-ed Bible Study at the Madison Campus Sunday mornings, July 1 - August 5, 9:30-10:30 Must preregister for Child care available for infants and toddlers only. Dave Cummins will lead a study of Being a Disciple: Counting the Real Cost, by Kay Arthur. The book includes six 40-minute lessons that we will work through during class using inductive Bible study methods. There is no homework, and if you miss a class, it will take just 40 minutes to catch up! Each person should buy his own book, which is available on Amazon. New Ministry Changes on Monday Nights Starting in June we are transitioning our Celebrate Recovery program into a different focus and approach to helping and healing people. We are excited about the ways God is leading our discipleship counseling ministries into a new era. After a thorough evaluation with our Celebrate Recovery leaders and our Elder Commission over CR, we decided to replace our Celebrate Recovery program with a new biblically based ministry that focuses on change at the heart level. This ministry will go beyond hurts, habits, and hang-ups and will be a discipleship counseling and equipping ministry. Monday nights beginning in September will become a practical opportunity to learn how to put into every day life, the great teaching and theology we learn on Sundays. More details will be coming soon about this new expanded ministry. These equipping groups will train many more members of First Bible about what is going on in their own hearts and how to help others to learn that as well! For the month of June we will take a much-needed break on Monday nights. In July we will begin training former CR leaders for the upcoming Monday night groups. This training time is also open to anyone who has a heart for discipling others in difficult places. Stay tuned on how you can be involved in this new and exciting equipping ministry.
