Dear Friends Mission a matter of intention? Before Jesus returned to his Father, he said to his disciples: «But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.» (Acts 1:8). Obviously the various missionary activities right on the doorstep, in the region, around the globe and also among those people who, in the eyes of many, are considered to be «second- class people» were absolutely equal in his sight. For Jesus there was no «or» but rather a connecting «and» between the various mission fields. Do we share this comprehensive understanding of mission? On the other hand Jesus did not gave an advice to his disciples what they should do. He did not ask them either what they want to do. He just declared: You will be my wit- nesses. Are we aware of the fact that this is also true for our talking and acting? And could it be that, just because of this insight, mission is not really a matter of intention but rather a matter of credibility? It is this credibility, which is characterizing a number of missionary and diaconal projects of Methodist Churches in Europe: Young and pregnant women in Latvia receive help so that they can decide to keep their babies. A local church in Portugal helps unemployed people and families in need. Children with special needs in Macedonia are invited to participate in an annual summer camp where they experience joy and loving care. Members of a local church in Slovakia regularly visit children of an orphanage and share with them their time and their love. I would like to invite you to support these and other projects. So many good things would not be possible without your sharing - whether it is about pastors salaries, theo- logical education, diaconal activities for people in need or new ideas for communicating the timeless gospel (some thoughts about these four priorities of the Fund for Mission in Europe can be found on the following two pages). Yes, your support makes a difference. Your sharing awakens new hope and helps people to get to know Jesus Christ. Therefore I would like to express my heart- felt thanks to you. And who knows: Maybe you will also be encouraged by one of the projects to become engaged in a similar way, but on another mission field for example right on your doorstep. I would be very glad, for then the Fund for Mission in Europe would have achieved its double goal: To help one another to learn from one another. Urs Schweizer Manager of the Fund for Mission in Europe Mission in Europe 3

1. Working towards Sustainability In many European countries, the Methodist churches cannot serve without financial assistance. In planting the seed for further development of these churches, however, it is important that this assistance does not create dependency neither financial and certainly not in terms of content. Hence, it is an important concern of the Fund for Mission in Europe to promote the self- sufficiency of the receiving churches. This means that the churches can increasingly stand on their own feet in terms of personnel, con- tent, as well as financially. Additionally, it means that they bring themselves, as giving communities, complete with their own identities and the wealth of their faith experi- ences, into the worldwide Methodist family. Your donations will help that the pastors can earn at least a minimum living wage; they will support the development of new models of pastoral service, and they will enable the building of a functioning church infrastructure (this implies also providing suitable church space). 2. Theological Education With the political changes of 20 years ago, a «time of grace» (Bedros Altunian, Bulgaria) began in the formerly Communist countries and dozens of churches have come into being. For the «old» churches, as well as for a healthy further development of the new ones, the guidance of leaders well trained in theology is necessary. Therefore a sound theological education (basic and continuing) is an important priority in all European countries. The goal of theo- logical education exists not simply to ensure that all churches can each have their own pastor. This is neither from a financial nor from a personnel perspective feasible. Rather, then, the objective of theological and continuing education for pastors, as well as specialized training for lay people, will have been reached when both the «new» and the «old» United Methodist churches engage in their mission tasks in creative, believable ways and are, in the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, «the Church for others». The Fund for Mission in Europe wishes to offer support in reaching these goals, especially in the form of collaboration across (linguistic and other) boundaries. Mission in Europe 4

3. Being a Learning Church God s message is timeless. The life conditions of people, on the other hand, are subject to large and small variations. Therefore, it is repeatedly a great challenge for all Churches including the United Methodist Church to find suitable words and deeds for communicating this message. But «he who has only a hammer as a tool, sees a nail in each problem» (Paul Watzlawick). In order to respond to this large challenge, the United Methodist Church must therefore be a «learning» Church. Mission in Europe is not called to do today that, which has always been done, while using those instruments, which have always been used. Rather, the point is to forge a reliable connection to new ideas and experiences, including reciprocal ex- change of individual competencies to the profit of the entire Church. To- gether, new missionary activities can be found which will bring the timeless message of God s love to the people of today and tomorrow. This is exactly the purpose the Fund for Mission in Europe is serving. 4. Diaconal Work It is God s will that all people should receive needed help. That s why Methodist churches all over Europe lead both young and older persons into a relationship with the one who says, «I am the way, the truth and the life». And that s why they try to hear the voices of those who cry out because of their needs without ignoring those who already grew silent in their misery. They try to lend a voice to the poor and weak and to awaken a new hope for a better future. A large service is not required to achieve this result. With steadfast persistence, a Church community may grow out of small social service ministries, since they give the message of God s love a believable form. These are reasons why the Fund for Mission in Europe supports diaconal projects. They are especially important for those people who are socially excluded because they are mem- bers of a minority group. Mission in Europe 5

Projects AL- 101 Church Planting in Albania ( ) Today more than 50% of Albania s population are living in rural areas. Many people are now migrating to the larger towns or to foreign countries as they see no long- term future for themselves in the villages. This reality has some implications on the work of the UMC. The Church is still present in the Mokra region in the southeast of the country (i.e. in Bishnica and its surroundings) but also attempts to plant and strengthen new churches in the towns (Tirana, Pogradec). The responsible people aim to «translate Methodism into Albanian» and to combine both: to share the gospel and to address the challenges of today s society appropriately and effectively. BG- 104 Living the Gospel among Turkish- Speaking People ( ) The UMC in Bulgaria has successfully served among the Turkish- speaking minority for many years. This work resulted in the foundation of various local churches. In many cases its members belong to the lower social class, and after their conversion to Christi- anity they often have to establish a new circle of friends. Practical signs of solidarity are therefore an important part of the work of these churches. The leaders of the UMC in Bulgaria plan to train and empower young Turkish- speaking people in order to strengthen and expand the existing work. CZ- 105 Parents Center Duha in Plzen ( ) Since April 2008 the Center of Christian Aid in Plzen is operating from Monday to Friday every week. Among other things, there are regular activities for parents with their children, which are attracting growing interest. In addition to lectures of acknowl- edged experts, which are focusing on medical, peda- gogical, psychological and other issues, particularly the creative workshops, the excursions and the «Family Week» are very well received. The leaders of the center aim to live the gospel and at the same time strengthen the relationship between parent and child. This is a very important investment as many families in the Czech Republic break up at this time. CZ- 106 Mothers Center «Majak» in Prague ( ) The «Majak» (lighthouse) Community Center is located in the basement of Prague- Nove Mesto UMC. Every morning from 9 to 12 the rooms are reserved for mothers and their children aged 0 to 4 years. There are a number of organized activities (lectures, discus- sions, creative workshops, devotions), but there are also a lot of informal moments where the children can play and the mothers have an opportunity for private conversation or individual coun- seling. A library with selected specialist literature, various ex- cursions and an annual camp for mothers and their children are additional offers of the Center. Mission in Europe 6

EA- 101 International Church at Voronezh ( ) For many foreigners who come to Russia to study, Voronezh is the first stop. There they learn to speak Russian. But the first months in the new country often prove to be very difficult, and the students are regularly targets of racially motivated violence. The local United Meth- odist church offers them a safe haven, where they meet and can jointly celebrate the richness of their respective culture (e.g. in regard to music or food). The regular English and Russian worship services also include these celebrations. In the UMC the students find unconditional acceptance and appre- ciation regardless of denominational affiliation. At the same time, they can avail them- selves of necessary transitional help as well as help in contact with universities and authorities. The ministry of the local UMC also includes language training, a summer camp, a Christian library and various sport activities for the international students. EA- 104 Belonging Together Begins with Communication ( ) The UMC in Eurasia stretches over an enormous area. In order to be more than an asso- ciation of autonomous local churches, it is vital that the belonging- togetherness and the development of a common identity is promoted. The website eurasia.ru aims to serve this purpose and is constantly improved and expanded. Additionally, an Area Communicator has been assigned with the responsibility to inform and to establish links within the Church, but also to produce material that will enable congregations to present themselves to the wider society. The UMC in Eurasia needs help to cover the overhead expenses of this position, in particular for the production of printed material (information brochures, devotional guides). EA- 105 Mount Zion Camp Ural ( ) The UMC in the Ural District experienced an increased difficulty to rent centers for children and youth camps, for couples retreats and for pastors seminars. The centers are either too expensive or no longer rented to religious organizations. Therefore the leaders prayerfully decided to make a step of faith and to rent land for 49 years (this can be extended for another 49 years and so on) in order to establish their own camp- ground consisting of five cabins and a conference hall with a kitchen. A partner church in Florida provided financial assistance to cover the costs of the foundations and walls etc. In order to complete the roofing works, the church asks for support from Europe. EA- 106 Methodist Online Bible College ( ) About ten years ago Methodist leaders in Eurasia started to ask for theological distant learning courses based on the Methodist tradition. Eventually, in 2008, a few people started to realize the dream of having an Online Bible College for lay members and lay leaders of the UMC in Eurasia. Because a number of these leaders work full- time or live Mission in Europe 7

so far away from places where seminars are organized and where continuing theologi- cal education is offered, the internet is the only realistic possibility for them to be trained and empowered for their ministry in the churches. The very committed people working on the Online Bible College hope that the international support will enable them to offer this important mission tool to as many people as possible. EE- 102 Continuing Pastoral Education for Pastors and Lay Leaders ( ) United Methodist pastors and lay leaders in Estonia are offered two one- day seminars and a two- day summer- retreat annually. In a rapidly changing society continuous pastoral education is a necessity, and given the fact that there is hardly any country in Europe with a higher percentage of people without any religious affiliation than Estonia, this continuous training is even more important. Exchange of experience, presentation of new and creative ways to share the gospel and strengthening the faith of the individuals as well as the fellowship among the pastors by mutual encouragement are also important parts of this program. EE- 105 Youth Transformation Project ( ) Vöru UMC is a small church in Estonia with 33 members. In addition there are up to 20 young people who are participating in the youth events. The church leaders aim to strengthen these young people in their spiritual development and to encourage them to serve others in environments yet unknown to them accompanied by experienced leaders who are regularly involved in such servant ministries. The project includes an outreach to a hospital, a prison and an orphanage in Estonia as well as a trip to the «Hope Center» in the neighboring Latvia (see project LV- 104). It combines mission and diaconal work and will give the young people a fuller understanding of the Church as a loving community and this will leave positive marks in the lives of all people involved. EUR- 101 Methodist e- Academy ( ) The Methodist e- Academy was established with the aim of equipping future Methodist leaders for their service in the congregations. This new program mainly puts emphasis on modern computer technol- ogy, i.e. it is an internet- based E- learning program in two common languages (German/English). However, the interactive distant learning program is also sup- plemented by regular personal contact with other students and teachers/tutors in Reutlingen (Deutschland). The first course with partici- pants from ten European countries was launched in September The program is coordinated by Dr. David Field (Switzerland). EUR- 102 Tent Mission/emk- mobil ( ) For many local churches who are active in mission work throughout Europe, the «emk- mobil» and the tents of the «Tent Mission» are a helpful tool, since they are both use- Mission in Europe 8

able where no church space is available and attractive, as well. The «Evangelisations- werk» of the UMC in Germany does not only provide the infrastructure (i.e. tents or the bus) but also runs seminars for pastors and lay people in which they can learn the basic knowledge of evangelism, church planting and church growth. However, the local churches in Eastern Europe and the Balkans are not able to fully cover the costs related to this mission work. HR- 101 Church Development on the Adriatic ( ) Despite a variety of intense efforts of its leaders the UMC in Croatia can hardly celebrate any positive growth neither in Split nor at any other place on the Adriatic. However, particu- larly the ministry with youth/young adults and the pastoral care for people in difficult life situations offer many possibili- ties to provide individual spiritual assistance and to share encouragement and hope. Beyond the members and friends of the congregation, people both in Croatia and other coun- tries, benefit from the extensive activities, in particular from the production of Christian literature. The congregation in Split is far from being able to cover the salary and program costs on its own. HU- 102 Theological Continuing Education ( ) The UMC in Hungary makes it possible for their pastors and lay leaders to receive a good theological education and continuing pastoral education. This contributes to their ability to meet the challenges of a changing society. The most important areas are graduate courses of study in theology and additional studies in Methodism, as well as language classes. While the graduate courses are offered at the Reformed or Lutheran Universities, the Methodist study courses are organized by the UMC. The training of lay leaders is carried out in cooperation with other churches who share the Wesleyan tradi- tion (the so- called «Wesley Alliance»). HU- 105 National Summer Family Camp ( ) In 1997 the UMC in Hungary established a large Na- tional Summer Family Camp. Since then the camp did not only develop into an indispensable part of the life of the churches for many people it is also the only possibility to spend some holidays. The program of the camp includes age specific and intergenerational Bible studies, worship services, games, creative work- shops, discussion groups and lots of music. An aver- age of more than 300 people from all local churches, generations and social classes take part, grow in their faith and share their personal gifts and the wealth of their lives with others. Mission in Europe 9

HU- 106 Regional Camps for Children and Youth ( ) In 2009 the UMC in Hungary organized 12 regional camps for about 500 children and youth. This is the result of a threefold development: The work with children and youth is a priority for all churches; however, often there are neither enough children nor leaders to organize local camps; and regional events prove to be more suc- cessful and attractive, particularly for youth, than local activities. Therefore a great number of regional camps will be organized in 2010, as well. Thanks to the financial assistance from abroad, children from big families with low income, from Roma families and from orphanages will also be invited to participate in these camps. LV- 102 After School Program ( ) Some time ago the leaders of Liepa UMC decided to open the church doors for children and young people from their area. They can now spend their free time after school in a secure and cared for place. They receive assistance with their homework and a hot meal. Devotions and discussions about the Christian faith are an integral part of the program, as well. Volunteers from the church are providing the care, and the accom- modation costs are carried by the UMC in Latvia. The church, however, needs support to cover the costs of food and materials. LV- 103 Christian Theatre Outreach Program ( ) A young Latvian woman who has studied dramatics in the USA tries to inspire youth and young adults in Riga through the art of theatre. The rehearsals of the own written plays are combined with Bible studies. The latter help to deal with issues of the play from a scriptural point of view and to address the core values of life. This ministry is an attractive opportunity for the young people to grow in their faith and then to reach out and to share the gos- pel through the play. They need financial assistance to cover the expenses for costumes, technical equipment, advertisement and travel. LV- 104 Hope Center in Riga ( ) In Latvia there is an increasing number of young women getting into personal and fi- nancial difficulties in consequence of their pregnancy. Quite often they do not see any other way than to have an abortion. However, the UMC would like to help them to make a decision to keep their babies. Therefore the «Hope Center» in Riga has been established. Seven young mothers and their babies can be accommodated and taken care of at the same time and they can stay there for at least six months. The «Hope Center» offers shelter, counseling and assistance in regard to the women s future life on their own. In addition, the center also distributes baby items and clothing to young mothers in difficult living conditions. Mission in Europe 10

MK- 103 The «Miss Stone» Diaconal Center in Strumica ( ) The «Miss Stone» center in Strumica was opened in 2001 and has developed into an important bridgehead for love to ones neighbor. More than 100 elderly and poor people receive a hot meal (soup, main course and dessert) delivered to their houses five times a week. However, this «Meals on Wheels» program, which is meanwhile well- known throughout the region, is not merely a food delivery service. It also offers an opportunity to have a conversation with someone or to re- ceive practical help (clothes, medicines, firewood etc.). Through this program individual needs have been met, living circumstances improved and hope has been awoken. MK- 104 Production of Christian Literature ( ) With regard to the present and future of the UMC in Macedonia it is important to strengthen the Methodist identity of its members and local churches. The production of Christian literature magazines, calendars, devotional books and booklets on particular Methodist themes and issues aims to serve this purpose. The printed material initiates the discussion on living causes, strengthens the connexion and is a vital instrument to share the gospel with people beyond the local churches. In 2010, among other publica- tions, a brochure on Ellen Stone, the American missionary after which the diaconal center of the UMC in Strumica is named, will be published. MK- 106 Equipping Young Leaders for Transnational Cooperation ( ) The UMC in Macedonia has successfully organized International Youth Camps for more than ten years. In a region where the peaceful coexistence of people of different ethnic background is increasingly faced with difficult challenges, these camps are an important witness of God s reconciling love. Doing a further step the UMC is planning to gather 30 to 50 young leaders from Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania and other countries in summer 2010 in order to teach them how to organize this transnational cooperation autono- mously. Additionally this seminar of one week aims to help the young people to grow in their faith and to strengthen the relations to same- aged people from other churches. MK- 107 Summer Camp for Children with Special Needs ( ) Many years ago young adults of the UMC in Mace- donia have started to organize and lead a summer camp for 60 to 90 children with special needs. Most of these children live in homes and come from lower social classes. The summer camps have proved to be the highlight of the year for them; regardless of their origin and their life story they can experience an island of warmth and love. But the camps are also a meaning- ful opportunity for the young leaders to practice their skills in various regards and to learn what it means to be loving, caring and serving disciples of Christ. Mission in Europe 11

MSE- 101 Pastors Salaries in Central and Southern Europe ( ) About 150 pastors are currently leading the United Methodist churches in the (south- )eastern part of Central and Southern Europe. In times of serious economic and social problems (poverty, unemployment, migration) they are accepting the challenge to speak of God s love and to live it. Their committed and creative service includes much more than worship and pastoral care, and has, in many cases, positive effects far beyond the local churches. But though the salaries of these pastors are partially very low, the local churches are not able to finance them from own resources. NO- 101 International Methodist Church in Oslo ( ) The International Methodist Church in Oslo was started in Septem- ber 2008 in order to reach out to students, immigrants and refugees from all over the world living in the Oslo region. This ministry has a diaconal aspect: People of more than 50 different nationalities can find fellowship and support while trying to adjust to a new cultural situation. On the other hand it is an evangelistic ministry, as well, as the responsible leaders aim to reach out to people and to make committed disciples of Jesus Christ. PT- 101 Salary Support for Pastors ( ) The Evangelical Methodist Church in Portugal is in addition to the activities in the local churches very actively involved in social service ministries. Work with immigrants, care for the elderly and centers for children and families are three examples for this commitment. Moreover, it increasingly engages itself in ecumenical work. In spite of making great efforts to pay the salary and pension subsidy costs for the pastors, the Church is not yet able to do it without any financial assistance from abroad. PT- 103 Mourisco do Vouga ( ) The Methodist church in Mourisco do Vouga owns a property with two buildings. The land needs to be cleaned and the buildings need to be renewed (i.e. some rooms and the toilets need to be repaired/renewed and painted and there is a need to buy some furniture such as chairs, tables, kitchen furniture and beds). After this renewal the buildings will be used for a solidarity project to support unemployed people as well as children, young people and families in need. By doing this, the church members would like to practice what is preached from the pulpit and to let people of their neighbor- hood experience the gospel in a very practical way. Mission in Europe 12

RS- 102 Continuing Theological Education for Pastors ( ) The people of Serbia are faced with a great social and economic challenge. It is indis- pensable that the pastors receive regular continuing theological education to be equipped for their congregational ministry. But it is equally important for the future of the UMC in Serbia that a common Methodist identity and sense of connexion is devel- oped. In order to meet these aims, two continuing education retreats are organized annually. They usually deal with Methodist theology and a Methodist understanding of the Church. In 2010 they will focus on the book «Five Practices of Fruitful Congrega- tions» written by Bishop Robert Schnase. RS- 103 Work with Children and Youth ( ) The UMC in Serbia organizes several camps for children and youth annually. They are attended by dozens of young people, and the international support makes it possible to invite those who would not have the necessary means to partici- pate. The program of these camps includes games and crafts, music and songs, a lot of fun and of course food, as well. But the most important thing: The camps have proved to be opportunities for the young people to experience a great fellowship and to renew their personal relationship with God and to revive their faith. SK- 109 Continuing Theological Education for Pastors ( ) The UMC in Slovakia aims to provide its pastors with educational opportunities for life- long learning. Three areas are taken into account: the individual studies of theological literature, the participation in ecumenical events and the organization of seminars on various church- related issues (in 2009 the seminars focused on leadership, pastoral care of the middle age adults and the meaning of the vision for a pastor). These opportuni- ties are an important instrument in equipping the pastors for their service in a changing society. SK- 111 Ministry in the Orphanage in Sered ( 500. ) Every Friday, members of Sered UMC visit the local orphanage. They sing and play with the children, they tell them stories, and with an open heart and with open ears they are just there for the kids. At Easter time and Christmas there are usually special activities. Because of these regular visits mutual trust has grown, and there have been numerous pastoral care activities with the children in the past. Additionally, this ministry con- tributes to a change of the general understanding of the public about the UMC. It is no longer a «sect» but a Church whose service lends credibility to its proclamation. Mission in Europe 13

SK- 112 Street Evangelism ( ) Members of Trnava UMC regularly go town squares, streets and parks of their city to proclaim the gospel. Mu- sic, songs, personal testimonies and other creative elements are part of the program, which usually takes two hours. The teams preparing and pre- senting the program consist of 10 to 15 people each. Their leaders would like to expand this ministry to other cities and villages of Slovakia and to offer an opportunity to people with no affiliation to any Church to hear the good news. SK- 113 Musical «The Second Chance» ( ) During 18 months a group of 25 young men and women invested a lot of time and energy in order to make the dream of an evangelistic musical come true. Step by step the Slovak version of the musical «The Second Chance» (based on the story of the Prodigal Son) came into being. The first per- formances with more than 500 atten- dants took place in In 2010 addi- tional performances are planned (in Slovakia and in Serbia). In order to diminish the technical difficulties and to improve the audibility wireless head worn microphones need to be purchased. They will also serve the various ministries of the UMC in Slovakia beyond the performances of this musical. SK- 114 Enhancement of Children s Ministry ( ) There are already various activities for and with children in the local churches of the UMC in Slovakia. In order to strengthen this work a District platform of children s minis- try workers will be established. This platform will support a nationwide exchange of ideas and experiences, and it will also provide quality educational materials. Furthermore the platform will serve as an instrument of mutual encour- agement, and it will help to initiate and support missionary events (e.g. the national summer camp for children). As a result of this cooperation and coordination the quality of the programs in the local churches will be improved. Mission in Europe 14

Albania Capital: Tirana Population: 3,64 millions Religion: Muslim (70%) Orthodox (20%) UMC Churches: 3 Constituency: 100 Ordained Elders: 1 Origin: 1889/1998 About 120 years ago active Methodist work began in Albania. Besides preaching the gospel and practical everyday help, the focal point and primary work was that of provid- ing basic education for the population. Then, Methodist work was inactive for several decades until 1992, when Christians from Germany began to be involved by bringing spiritual and material help to Albania. Most of the activities focused on Bishnica, a re- mote mountain village in the southeast of the country, which had 800 residents at that time, and on its surroundings. In the following years the work was extended. On the one hand educational, medical, agricultural and forestry projects were established. On the other hand several doors opened up for the gospel so that in July 1998, with the baptism of the first Christians, the United Methodist Church in Bishnica could be estab- lished. Since that time, the UMC in Albania has continuously developed. As a result of the internal migration in Albania, the work is no longer focused on Bishnica and the surrounding villages, but has also spread into other parts of the country. In Tirana and Pogradec two hopeful new churches have been established in The responsible leaders of the UMC in Albania aim to combine sharing the gospel and address- ing the challenges of today s society both ap- propriately and effectively. And there is hope indeed: New people are joining the Church, and the commitment of lay people is increasing. Approved Projects in 2010 AL- 101 Church Planting in Albania 11'000. Mission in Europe 15

Bulgaria Capital: Sofia Population: 7,21 millions Religion: Orthodox (83%) Muslim (12%) UMC Churches: 34 Constituency: 2700 Ordained Elders: 6 (+ 2 retired) Origin: 1857 Website: The UMC in Bulgaria has more than 150 years of history behind it. As a minority de- nomination, it often struggled to survive especially in the 40 years after the Second World War when almost all church activities were forbidden. By 1989, only three of the original 16 local churches had survived. But as a result of a huge commitment, the Church was again structurally organized and filled with life. At the center of this, yet to be finished, growth process, the founding of new churches exists side by side with the consolidation and stabilization of the existing ones. Many local churches and individuals have recognized that in a society going through a radical transition they are only credi- ble when the proclamation of the gospel goes hand in hand with practical help. Their current activities therefore combine both words and deeds in many different ways (e.g. soup kitchens, social centers etc.). Members who come from minority groups (Roma, Armenians, Turks), children and youth as well as people from the margins of society are given special attention. One of the results of this service is the fact that the UMC in Bulgaria has succeeded in becoming a model of peaceful coexistence and collaboration of people belonging to various ethnic groups and this is a very important Christian witness in a region still challenged by ethnic and religious tensions. 17 Croatia Capital: Zagreb Population: 4,49 millions Religion: Roman- Catholic (88%) Orthodox (4,4%) UMC Churches: 1 Constituency: 40 Ordained Elders: 1 Origin: 1923 Website: Starting in 1923, missionary work created a Methodist presence in Croatia (in Zagreb and later in Maribor). However, these local churches were not successful and therefore were called off. Besides of this missionary work, the Methodist Church in Italy main- tained several churches in Istria (for instance in the town of Pula). But when Istria be- came part of the former Yugoslavia in 1947, this work was discontinued, as well. Then, in 1995, Peter and Heidi Zunic were drawn by a vision of church planting work in Split. Through evangelism and social services (movies, concerts, outreaches in the pedestrian zone, games, sport activities, language courses, youth camps with other Churches, counseling for immigrants, pastoral care), a relationship network was created. From these beginnings a comparably small church work grew. Beyond the members and friends of the congregation, people both in Croatia and other countries benefit from the extensive activities, in particular from the production of Christian literature. The latest efforts to establish a presence in other loca- tions in the Adriatic coastal region for example in Sibenik have not yet met with noteworthy success. Since September 2008 the church planting work falls under the supervision of the Superintendent for the UMC in Albania, Macedonia and Croatia. 18 Czech Republic Capital: Prague Population: 10,21 millions Religion: unaffiliated (59%) Roman- Catholic (27%) UMC Churches: 24 Professing Members: 686 Ordained Elders: 13 (+ 2 retired) Origin: 1920 Website: In 1920, US Methodist missionaries began their work in the then combined state of Czechoslovakia. They organized revival meetings, distributed Bibles and helped people still suffering from the consequences of the First World War. In the following years many local churches were established first in what is now the Czech Republic, later in what is now Slovakia. The church grew rapidly but also experienced politically and financially difficult times. Today the UMC is very mission- oriented; this is clearly seen in its evangelistic programs and the varied activities for children and youth. The social services for mothers and their children, for disabled people, for drug or alcohol dependent persons, for prisoners and those on the parole are another priority of the Church work. This work lends credibility to the gospel message, and through it, people find a new outlook on their lives, and get ready to share the love, which they themselves have received. This work bore fruit and four years later the first Methodist Church in Estonia was built. Over the next 14 years Methodism spread throughout Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Before long, 46 churches, 29 pastors, and about 1600 mem- bers were counted. Then the Baltic States were occupied by Soviet troops. A long pe- riod of suffering began for Methodism in Estonia. Some pastors and lay preachers were even killed. Yet, Methodism in Estonia, in contrast to Latvia and Lithuania, survived. Priorities of the current activities of the local churches include work with children and youth, as well as social projects. Singing, theater, and cultural activities are equally typical activities for the UMC in Estonia. Bible Groups) Professing Members: 2188 Ordained Elders: 64 (+ 5 retired) Origin: 1889 Website: eurasia.ru Over 120 years ago the first Methodists came to Russia. St. Petersburg was the center of Methodist work in the Baltic States and in Finland. In eastern Russia, Korean Method- ists gathered in Vladivostok and other cities. Everywhere they took care of the Russian people, as well. After the communist revolution, the Church was banned by the regime and all of its property was nationalized. Methodism survived the Soviet regime only in Estonia, and in an underground congregation in western Ukraine. Spontaneous beginnings led to a reopening of the work in Moscow in The Church was registered and officially recognized by the Russian Ministry of Justice in Today the UMC has more than 100 congregations and other working branches in Russia, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Bela- rus. The mission situation is characterized by a high level of secularization of the population, in conjunc- tion with a superficial restoration of the traditional Orthodox Faith. The difficult economic situation and the collapse of the social system after the fall of the Soviet Union challenges the UMC to be active in social service, along with evangelistic missions. 21 Hungary Capital: Budapest UMC Churches: 29 Population: 9,91 millions Professing Members: 409 Religion: Roman- Catholic (52%) Ordained Elders: 11 (+ 2 retired) Reformed (16%) Origin: 1898 unaffiliated (15%) Website: Over 110 years ago, Methodist missionaries established the first Methodist churches in Hungary, firstly among German- speaking and later amongst Hungarian- speaking people. These churches grew fast but suffered heavy setbacks for political reasons until the end of the Second World War. Yet God always created something new. Today, focal points of church activities include family, children and youth work (summer camp, work in schools, radio and television minis- tries), as well as various social services, e.g. for the elderly, the Roma people, drug addicts and prisoners. The Church is also strongly engaged in ecumenical work. The local churches are growing slowly but continuously, and they are trying with great commitment to raise the level of their financial independence. However, there are many obstacles to achieving this aim. Popular camps and educational activities can only be carried out with help from outside of the country, and for building projects at various locations, the needed means are lacking. Then, however, the church buildings were nationalized and church work systemati- cally destroyed. By 1947, the Methodist Church no longer existed in Latvia. The break- up of the Soviet Union gave way to a new beginning for Methodism in Latvia. It was re- established in Shortly thereafter, it recovered some of its buildings from the state. Today there are 13 congregations. In all churches there are Sunday Schools and well- functioning youth groups. This work bore fruit and four years later the first Methodist Church in Estonia was built. During the next 14 years Methodism spread its light over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. In 1940, the Baltic States were occupied by Soviet troops. Methodism in Lithuania did not survive this period. It was only in August of 1995 that the first Methodist church re- opened in Kaunas. Several months later another church was opened in Siauliai. And so, the UMC grew continuously, through its credible witness in word and deed. To- day, there are eleven local churches and two additional preaching places with 540 members led by seven pastors. The UMC in Lithuania is still small, and finds itself in the middle of further development. Sup- port from the international connexion is therefore needed and very much appre- ciated. 24 Macedonia Capital: Skopje Population: 2,07 millions Religion: Orthodox (65%) Muslim (33%) UMC Churches: 12 Constituency: 5000 Ordained Elders: 2 (+ 2 retired) Origin: 1873 Website: umc.org.mk More than 135 years ago, missionaries from the USA and former Macedonian inde- pendence leaders, who became Christians in the prison of Thessaloniki, established the first Methodist congregations in Macedonia. Of enormous significance for the further growth and development of the work and its large social effects was the committed service of the «Biblewomen» who in the face of great difficulties visited remote villages and shared the gospel in word and deed. However, the United Methodist work in Ma- cedonia also went through times of war, repression, and isolation. Today, extensive outreach ministries among people facing difficult situations (e.g. the elderly and physically disabled or people belonging to the Roma- minority) are important parts of the Church s work. A project of particular significance for the peaceful future of Macedonia is the endeavor of the UMC to promote interfaith contacts and understanding. The production and distribution of Christian literature, programs for children and youth as well as activities for women are other priorities. Despite political separation of their countries, the local churches in Macedonia and Serbia still belong to the same Annual Conference. 25 Norway Capital: Oslo Population: 4,66 millions Religion: Lutheran (85,7%) unaffiliated (8,1%) UMC Churches: 47 Professing Members: 4400 Ordained Elders: 52 (+26 retired) Origin: 1856 Website: The roots of the Methodist work in Norway go back to a Norwegian sailor who had met Methodists in Boston and had surrendered his life to Christ. After his return to Norway in 1849 he was given many opportunities to preach the gospel. This work had some positive effects. In 1856 a second missionary came to Norway, and in the same year the first Methodist congregation in Norway was established. In 1857 the first Methodist church was built in Sarpsborg. The work grew rapidly, and when Norway became an Annual Conference in 1876, there were 19 churches and 2798 members. Just 20 years later the Church had grown to 4700 members. While the Methodists always constituted a small minority in Norway they nevertheless contributed to and strengthened move- ments for religious tolerance, temperance and children s religious education. Despite the war and its aftermath, Norwegian Methodism grew until the early 1950 s. Together with other Scandinavian Methodists the UMC in Norway became involved in foreign mission again. In the mid- 20 th century nearly 100 women and men of the UMC in Scandinavia were serving as foreign missionaries, and to this day there is a close co- operation with Methodists all over the world. However, the Church does not only work in other countries but has a significant impact on the Norwegian society, as well through a variety of diaconal and missionary activities. Moreover, in 1971 the Norwegian Methodists decided to establish a Theological Seminary on their own. Approved Projects in 2010 NO- 101 International Methodist Church in Oslo Mission in Europe 25

Poland Capital: Warsaw Population: 38,48 millions Religion: Roman- Catholic (90%) UMC Churches: 37 Professing Members: 2163 Ordained Elders: 18 (+ 5 retired) Origin: 1920 Website: The UMC in Poland was established 90 years ago, as a result of a series of missionary and humanitarian activities of Methodist churches in the USA. During the years «behind the iron curtain», the attitude of the regime towards the UMC was comparatively toler- ant, which allowed its continued existence. Even so, the UMC was hit hard with the nationalization of church buildings. Today, great importance is placed upon work with children, youth, and women. Several English language schools, a theological seminary, as well as a remarkable and far- reaching radio and televi- sion ministry are additional important areas of operation for the UMC. Recently, in the UMC of Poland, there is a new interest in social services, such as «A Glass of Water» ministry for alcohol dependent persons and their families. And the UMC in Poland is working hard to build bridges and to develop a common Christian witness with other Polish Churches. Thanks to this credible service in the society and in interde- nominational relations the UMC is a recognized and appreciated Church. 27 Portugal Capital: Lisbon Population: 10,71 millions Religion: Roman- Catholic (84,5%) unaffiliated (13%) Methodist Churches: 14 Constituency: 2000 Pastors: 8 Origin: 1854 Website: metodista.pt The origin of the Evangelical Methodist Church in Portugal arose from the work of two English laymen. While the growth of Methodism in Portugal was evident, the appeals to the Methodist Missionary Society in London to send a missionary were answered in 1871 only. In the following years the Church launched a great educational crusade against a high rate of illiteracy by opening primary schools. Between 1920 and 1940 the Church experienced its most fruitful period of expansion. However, this time was fol- lowed by years of painful isolation and a serious shortage of preachers. After 1954 the work grew again, and new areas of work thrived. The Church became involved in the ecumenical movement and, in view of the fact that it was forced to close down its primary schools, redi- rected its social programs to concentrate on other types of community services including projects in sup- port of children and the aged. In 1996 the Church, which was an Overseas District of the Methodist Church in Britain until then, became fully autonomous. But its main aim remained to share the love of Jesus in words and actions within the local churches, but also with needy people beyond: immigrants, children, fami- lies and people preparing for eternity. 28 Serbia Capital: Belgrade Population: 7,38 millions (excl. Kosovo) Religion: Orthodox (85%) Roman- Catholic (6%) UMC Churches: 14 Professing Members: 470 Ordained Elders: 4 (+ 2 retired) Origin: 1898 Website: The Methodist work in the Vojvodina (the northern part of what is now Serbia) was started more than 110 years ago. German missionaries established local churches among German emigrants and this was the reason why the work was exclusively German- speaking until In the following years the work grew, and thriving new churches were born among other population groups, as well. But there were not only joy and growth, the Church experienced persecution, suffering, isolation and setbacks, as well often because of political reasons. Today a varied children s and youth minis- try, Christian outreach programs, local and regional activities for women and men as well as practical help for people in need are some of the priorities of the local churches, which combine both the proclamation of the gospel and love in action. In a country looking for a future after difficult years, they aim to help people to discover God s love beyond any border of ethnicity. The fact that a new generation has ac- cepted the calling into the ministry of the Church and is taking the lead regarding this aim is an important sign and a source of hope. Despite political separation of their countries, the local churches in Macedonia and Serbia still belong to the same Annual Conference. 29 Slovakia Capital: Bratislava UMC Churches: 13 Population: 5,46 millions Professing Members: 193 Religion: Roman- Catholic (69%) Ordained Elders: 6 Lutheran (7%) Origin: 1925 Website: In 1920, US Methodist missionaries began their work in the then combined state of Czechoslovakia. They organized revival meetings, distributed Bibles and helped people still suffering under the consequences of the First World War. In the following years many local churches were established first in what is now the Czech Republic, later in what is now Slovakia. The church grew rapidly but also experienced politically and financially difficult times. Today the UMC is very mission- oriented. This is clearly seen in its evangelistic programs, in its youth ministry and its work in the communications media. The social services for people on the margins of society (particularly people belonging to the Roma- minority in eastern Slovakia) are another priority of the Church work. The UMC is also very engaged in ecu- menical activities (not least in regard to theological educa- tion) and stands for a common Christian witness.
