Dear Brothers and Sisters of Immanuel, One of the greatest gifts one person can give to another is commitment. If marriage is to work as God intends and be a blessing to each spouse, Jesus says that a man must leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife. (Mark 10:7) In other words, husband and wife must be committed to loving and caring for each other their whole lives long. Of course, God s commitment to us is the greatest gift of all. God the Father loves us so much and is so committed to us that he gave his only Son for our salvation. Jesus, too, because of his commitment to us, let go of his life and willingly suffered and died on the cross. Greater love has no one than this, Jesus said, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends. (John 15:13-14) And such love and commitment on God s part have their effect on us. Their life-changing power engenders commitment to God and to others in us. We answer God s call to follow Christ and share his good news with all the world. Immanuel is going to celebrate God s commitment to us and our commitment to be good managers of all the gifts God gives to us during a stewardship emphasis in May. Immanuel is going to celebrate God s commitment to us and our commitment to be good managers of all the gifts God gives to us during a stewardship emphasis in May. Called Consecrated Stewards, this program is produced and operated by the Lutheran Church Extension Fund. For three weeks in May, Immanuel will participate in Bible studies and enjoy sermons that teach us about God s generosity and what it means to be a consecrated steward, that is to say, a committed manager of God s gifts. The emphasis will culminate on May 20 when members are asked to respond to God s grace by taking a step forward in personal stewardship. We re calling this Sunday Consecration Sunday because we ll be inviting people to consecrate themselves and their gifts to the Lord. Consecration Sunday will really be a celebration of our call to be a witness and worker in God s kingdom. There will be a special luncheon after the 10:15 a.m. service on May 20 so that we can enjoy the fellowship of fellow believers and revel in what God has done for us. Pastor Mark Frith, a representative from Lutheran Church Extension Fund, will be our guest preacher on May 20 and our leader through the whole process. Pray that our Lord will use him and this emphasis to renew our faith and strengthen our commitment to our Savior. Watch for more details in the weeks to come! Jesus bless your abundantly! Love in Christ, One of the greatest gifts one person can give to another is commitment. Join us for our Holy Week & Easter Services... Maundy Thursday, March 29 7:30 pm Good Friday, March 30 12:00 noon & 7:30 pm Easter Sunday, April 1 6:00 am (at Camp Wartburg) and 7:45 am & 10:15 am (at Immanuel)

2 Page 2 From Our Associate Pastor Greetings everyone! With Easter approaching I thought it might be a good thing to share some thoughts on the question, What is the best apologetic way to talk about the Resurrection? That is to say, what is the best way to defend the truth that Christ rose from the dead when in a discussion? Step 1: The very first and last step is to love and pray. Pray for others, pray God s Word would be rightly shared through you and that the Holy Spirit would be at work in all who hear the Word. And love the people you talk to! Step 2: Read the Scriptures. Consume the Gospel accounts and the words of the apostles in Acts and through the Epistles. Well, study all of Scripture. Study Church history as you grow in your understanding of the Christian faith. Read apologetics texts as well as secular history so you can better articulate your points during the conversation. We want to do that as a whole so that we re not blown around by every wind of doctrine (Eph. 4). People are taught how to spot a forgery by knowing the real thing down to the smallest detail. We want to know our faith to the smallest detail as well so we can rightly articulate it when in discussions and not be deceived by false teachings. Step 3: LISTEN! Be quiet and listen. It s tough. Really tough. I fail in this step myself far too often. Listen to what the person is saying. Care for the person you re talking to. You re not engaging in this discussion to win a debate. You re having this discussion to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the forgiveness he has won for all people. If you don t know whether the person is atheist, agnostic, apatheist, Mormon, Muslim, Buddhist, has a Christian past, or has no church background whatsoever, you won t know how best to share God s Word with them. Yes, Scripture is the power of God for salvation (Rom 1), but we want to know who we re talking to so we can rightly share God s Word with them. Step 4: Keep loving. Be patient. Share God s Word and be calm. You re not here to win them to Christ. You re in the conversation to share God s Word and to do so lovingly (Eph. 4) because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God (Rom 10). All of the other stuff you study about history and stuff aren t going to win the argument, they ll only help you answer other common questions that will arise. Don t fret, though. Be ready to say, I don t know, I ll get back to you...because you won t know it all. We prep like this so that when people say, Oh, you re all about faith, I m about fact! You can reply accordingly. You can point to 1 Cor. 15 where Paul tells the people that if Jesus didn t rise from the dead, then our faith is for nothing. Not only that but Jesus appeared to a ton of people Immanuel Monthly including 500 at one time and all of them who are still alive as of Paul s writing of the letter could attest to it. You can point to all of the manuscript evidence that shows us that the Scriptures didn t get all contorted down to us like a game of Telephone. You can point to secular history that describes a man named Jesus who did amazing things and caused a stir in his time even apart from the eye witness accounts related to us in Scripture. Our faith is given to us by the Holy Spirit and is faith in historical fact. Be patient as you share the good news. Your life has been claimed by Christ and nothing can pull you from his nailpierced hands. That is the good news that we have the command and privilege to share. If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know. Ask the Pastor A Note from our Music Director The start of a new Church Season... How wonderful to begin April with the celebration of Easter on the very first day of the month! Every time I turn the calendar page over to the "next month" I take a moment to think about what that new month has going on. From the very first of April to the very end of April we will be in the Easter Season. The beautiful Easter hymns that include beautiful phrases of our Savior's love for us will bring back the "alleluias" which have been buried during the Lenten Season. Once again, when doxological verses are being sung, the organ's cymbelstern stop will be heard in praise of the "Three in One." Yes,the somber tones of Lent give way to the joyous sounds of Easter! As you worship during the weeks of the Easter Season, the "sweet joy" of Christ's resurrection will be heard in the hymns and the choral & bell selections shared throughout the services. With high delight, let us unite In songs of great jubilation. Ye pure in heart, all bear your part, Sing Jesus Christ, our salvation. To set us free forever, He is ris'n and sends To all earth's ends Good news to save ev'ry nation. LSB The month of April will conclude with Confirmation and Immanubells playing for the last time of their 2017/18 Music Season. So, from the beginning of the month to the end celebrate our Risen Lord and Savior! To Him be the glory!

8 An Update from Our Missionary Partners Funke News: Gifts of Love This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:10-11 Valentine s Day this year was unique because it was also Ash Wednesday. While the two holidays generally have two completely contrasting moods, it did provide an opportunity for us to reflect on Jesus, God s greatest gift to us, as well as the many other gifts of love that we have received and have had the opportunity to give. Pizza 4 Paraguay Day! Monday, April 9, 2018 Waterloo Pizza Hut Page 8 Dine in or carry out ALL DAY and use the flyer below to help out our Paraguay Mission Team! You can order online, too! Mwadui Lutheran Secondary School Eric continues to enjoy his new position as Assistant Academic Master. His time at school is filled with teaching, registering students, adjusting schedules, making peer education lists, and putting together math and science worksheets and activities. He also was able to download Wikipedia and Khan Academy so students can use the computers to research even without internet. Multiple teachers have likewise approached him to help them include media in their classrooms, such as watching examples of debates or a movie for a history class. This month Linda s guidance and counseling class covered how to ask good questions, how to stay awake when studying, and the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. She also helped to organize the first Career Day of the year. Last Saturday we were joined by the Honorable Neema Gasabile and Grace Mutabuzi. Neema Gasabile is a magistrate and a lawyer for our diocese. Grace studied journalism and now works as a communications officer for our diocese (among other things). We were so grateful that they took the time to come and answer students' questions about these fields of study. Life at Home On February 14th, Linda and the kids had a wonderful time making Valentine s cards for friends, and the following weekend Amber and Austin graciously gifted us with free babysitting so we could enjoy a belated Valentine s lunch in Shinyanga. On February 23rd, we joyfully celebrated Julia s birthday. While this was her 3rd birthday, it was our first time to celebrate with her which made the day extra special. Thankfully, all the packages from our families in the U.S. arrived on time. She had a wonderful time eating cake and ice cream and batting around balloons with her friends. Otherwise Linda continues to arrange home school activities for Michael and Julia around the letter of the week, and the weeks seem to be flying by. If you would like to see more pictures from Julia s birthday or all of the kids home school activities, you can find them at This is part of their March 2018 newsletter written by Eric & Linda Funke on March 1, Would you like to be added to their list? If so, Eric & Linda at Linda.Funke@GlobalLutheranOutreach.com and let them know.

I certainly do! I think we all have a hard time waiting for something or someone, or relying on someone else to do something or be somewhere. The women will begin a study on the CPH Bible study book, Waiting: A Bible Study on Patience, Hope, and Trust on April 12th. (Yes, we ll have to WAIT a couple weeks for it to begin!) All ladies are welcome to join us every Thursday at 7:00 pm in the overflow room. Books are available in the church office. I wonder if our word of the year intentional can help us with patience? Hmm. Intentionally in Christ, Lisa Clamors How good and pleasant it is when sisters live together in unity! Psalm 133:1 Would you like to make a breakfast casserole or bring fresh fruit, danishes, pastries, yogurt, or juice for our Mini- Retreat?
