Making more and stronger disciples of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. From Our Associate Pastor What s the proper length of a worship service? Ask the Pastor I m working on a longer response for the church website for a collection of questions which have come to me recently that essentially boil down to that single question: How do we decide how long worship should be? The post on the church website will be longer because it s a multi-faceted answer with deeper roots than simply reading a clock. The short answer is, There is no correct length for a worship service. When questions regarding the length of worship come up the deeper question is, Why do you ask? Is the question a general question regarding how we organize a worship service, or is the question coming from a concern of some sort? The length of a worship service varies on the history and theology of the region, denomination, and congregation. One church might have praise and worship that goes all night with sermons that are measured by hours rather than minutes while other churches have time constraints due to multiple services that necessitate things get wrapped up a bit quicker. Divine Service in an LCMS Lutheran congregation, generally speaking, goes for anywhere between an hour and an hour and a half (or longer) depending on the size of the congregation, how many services they have in a day, how much singing there is, whether there s anything extra special going on at the service (Confirmation, baptism, etc), and so on. Everything we do in worship has a theological purpose...even if we don t realize it. We hear God s Word (2 Timothy 3); we sing songs, and hymns, and spiritual songs (Eph. 5, Ps. 96, 98...and others); we receive God s gifts of Word and Sacrament (Heb 10:25, Acts 20:7); and we do so in an orderly way (1 Cor. 14). What we do, how we do it, and what is done for us all reflects and influences what we believe. There s an old Latin phrase that s used to discuss that idea: Lex orandi Lex credendi (the law of praying is the law of believing). We don t have chaotic worship services that claim the Holy Spirit is making people shout and dance. Instead, we trust the promises in Scripture that the Holy Spirit is actively working through God s Word to create faith and renew us (Rom 10, Eph 2). We build a worship service rooted in the traditions of Christians down through the centuries that proclaims the whole counsel of God and from time to time that takes more than 60 minutes. At Immanuel, our services usually last around an hour. That s mainly because we have Bible study after first service on Sunday mornings, so we have to be conscious of time for that reason. Occasionally worship goes a bit over if we have longer readings or need to unpack the sermon text a bit more in a sermon. And then again, sometimes worship ends a bit earlier than usual. The discussion is a lot bigger, and I ll dig deeper into it on the church website. But I ll conclude here by saying, There is no right worship length. We join together to hear God s Word and receive God s gifts of forgiveness, peace, and rest through Christ. If you want to chat, feel free to call, , or stop in. Blessings on your day!

8 Immanuel Monthly Funke News: Tending the Garden An Update from Our Missionary Partners Page 8 Earlier this month our friend Abel invited Michael out to the school s garden, teaching him how to pick okra and hoe the earth. As he worked, I thought about how planting the seeds are not enough. Gardens generally take consistent maintenance and care, and even then, only God can make the plants grow. We are currently in one of those seasons where many seeds are planted projects started and papers submitted and now we continue to tend the garden, trusting that God will bring forth a harvest. We rejoice in the many buds of progress so far! School We spent a large amount of time at school this month. In addition to teaching computer and physics classes, Eric oversaw a complete rewiring of half the computer lab. He was alerted to problems when both he and a student received a shock from a computer that was turned off. We are so thankful that he discovered the problems before anyone was hurt. An electrician was called in to run new wire to ensure the safety of the students and building. Meanwhile, Linda led the yearly 6.5 hour Saturday seminar on Sex and Relationships, with the help of the school nurse and fellow teachers. It covered the basics of sex, abuse, the physical, emotional, and spiritual ramifications of sex, and how to develop healthy relationships and make decisions for their futures. We always separate the boys and girls at the end, so Eric and other male teachers can answer the boys questions and Linda and other female teachers can answer the girls questions. This month, Linda also taught a lesson on bullying what is it, what causes it, how can we respond to it, and how do we keep it out of our school. We ve also hosted a few movie nights to give the students a fun way to continue learning English. Now we are preparing for the June break, when all the students will return home except the Form 4 students preparing for national exams. Eric will be heavily involved in getting all the grades logged and preparing grade report sheets for families. This month we also received our order of 107 books for Form 5 and 6, funded by the money brought in for books last November/December. Thank you to all who helped add more books to the school s library! Adoption Update Last but not least, we ve heard that the social workers at the Ministry of Social Welfare have received and approved our application. Now we are just waiting for the signature of the Commissioner in Dodoma. After the documents go to Dodoma and return to Dar Es Salaam, they will send our approval letter. Then we will be able to identify and meet our daughter! We hope and pray that will be soon :-) Written by Eric & Linda Funke on June 1, Would you like to be added to their list? If so, Eric & Linda at Linda.Funke@GlobalLutheranOutreach.com and let them know. Friday, August 11, :00 pm Multipurpose Room Up to 8 people per team $100 per team Bring your own drinks & snacks. Can You Help? Page 10 A Note from our Music Director Serving Him... I recently read CPH's Erica Goldman's article Recruiting and Retaining Church Musicians. I found it quite appropriate that the article came across my desk at the time of writing for Immanuel's July/August newsletter. Yes, summer is in full swing, and beginning the 2017/18 Music Season is most likely not being thought of for many of those involved in music at church. However, the end of August will come quickly, and the various music groups will begin practices for worship. Goldman explains how much time and energy it does take to serve in music ministry. And, that being involved in church music is a commitment that should not be taken lightly...taking into consideration managing one's personal schedule for rehearsals. This allows for God's praises to be heard musically in worship. We live in a fast-paced world with many activities to become involved in. Yet, taking the time to share God's Word in music (instrumental or vocal) is such a beautiful way to serve Him! Let ev'ry instrument be tuned for praise! Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise! And may God give us faith to sing always: Alleluia! LSB 796:5 Please consider joining Immanuel's Music Ministry in serving Him with your music abilities. If you need more information, or have any questions, feel free to contact me. Mark your calendars for 2017/18 Music Season practices: (more information on the following groups can be found on Immanuel's website under MUSIC) Immanubells: Wed, Sep 6:00 pm Adult Choir: Wed, Aug 7:00 pm Agape Ringers: Wed, Aug 8:05 pm PLEASE NOTE: Immanuel will be hosting our circuit's Reformation Service on Sunday, October 29th at 3:00 pm.
