2 This Month BETHEL NEWS Missionaries at Bethel in June Our Missions Sunday is June 1st with Missionary Evangelist Mark Davy who will be here for both 10:30AM and 6:30PM services. Our morning service will include an international food fair in our Lobby. On Sunday June 8th at 6:30PM, PAOC Global worker Darren McCrea will be with us. Darren has a powerful testimony from living homeless on the streets of London Ontario to being saved and now a leader with PAOC in missions in the nation of Columbia. On Sunday June 29th in our 10:30AM service, Missionary Mike Kerychuk will be sharing a report of his ministry in Southeast Asia, particularly in the nations of Cambodia and Burma. Membership Classes Would you like to become an official member of Bethel Church? Membership classes with Pastor Tim will be held on Sundays June 22nd and 29th at 9:30AM in the Boardroom by the main office. Both classes are required for membership. 4 OVERFLOW YOUTH CONFERENCE RECAP AS SEEN BY THE STUDENTS YOUTH TESTIMONIES God did some amazing things in my life! First off I rededicated my life to Jesus and God spoke into my life and prepared me to live for Him and everything He is. Also He took out all the doubts I have about Him and lastly He set me free from the stress and depression I ve been going through the last while. I feel like I ve truly been made a new, more happy person and I have no one but God to thank for that. I stepped into deeper waters with my relationship with God. And I stepped out of going in a cycle and buying into excuses all the time but rising to the next level of standing with Jesus. It was a confirmation that I m going to do something big in my life because I ve been called to do something bigger and greater. I wanna blow ordinary through the roof. This weekend changed me; it made me want to have a greater hunger for God and it showed me I have a God who has more for my life than what people believe and think. All I have to do is trust in Him and follow His plans for my life. This weekend God did a lot of stuff for me. He reminded me that just because I have come so far from the days before Revo doesn t mean I stop trying to improve myself and my relationship with Him! I realized I need to stop compromising with God and to listen to what He has to say whole heartedly. Last but not least I need to stop going all in just on special occasions but all the time! God told me that He has a plan for me and that suicide will not hold me back anymore. LEADER TESTIMONIES This weekend God showed me that the calling he has placed on my life is even greater then I imagined. I don t want to be like Esau and miss it! It s time for me to rise up, embrace that calling and walk in it! This weekend has changed so many lives including my own! I saw how God broke chains of bondage, teens getting saved, people going deeper into His presence and God confirming or calling people to ministry. I was so focused on this event being for our youth I was surprised when I felt God call me to ministry! All I can say is wow! God is so amazing and I m so excited to see where God is leading everyone in Revo!!

5 2014 missions guide missions plan missionaries local missions A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Missions is the heartbeat of God and therefore a high priority at Bethel Church. The whole redemptive message of the Bible is that God sent His best, His only Son, to bring hope and salvation to the world. As followers of Christ, we must do the same by doing our best to advance the good news of God s love and message of reconciliation. The Great Commission that Jesus gave to all of His followers is to GO into all the world and proclaim this good news. We fulfill this commission by praying, sending, supporting and doing missions. It starts from our church reaching into our own community and then to the communities and nations around the world. This brochure is our Missions plan at Bethel for It is where we start - not where we end. May I encourage each one at Bethel, to not only be a financial contributor to the work of God through Missions, but also use this brochure as a daily prayer guide for the missionaries, ministries and outreaches that we support. 6 meet our missionaries ILYA & JANET BANTSEEV RUSSIA The Bantseevs are pastoring a church of approximately 1,200 people in Novokuznetsk, Siberia; a city of 600,000 people. Their congregation ministers in prisons, orphanages, and to people with life controlling problems or addictions. They also organize various ministry and missionary teams to plant churches throughout Siberia and share the gospel with professional groups such as doctors, athletes, government officials and police. MIKE & SHEILA MIDDLEBROOK KENYA Michael and Sheila Middlebrook serve in ministry at the Pentecostal Bible College in Nyang ori, Kenya where there is an enrollment of 300 Kenyan students. Michael and Sheila both teach and Michael serves as Academic Dean of the College. Please pray that the Lord would strategically place these graduates in ministry within Kenya and beyond. Also pray that the young people of Kenya would continue to hear and respond positively to the call of God upon their lives. BOB & MAGda EMBERLEY Bob Emberley grew up as a teen and young adult in Bethel Sarnia. He and his wife, Magda, have been working full-time with YWAM (Youth With A Mission) for many years. They assisted in starting a YWAM base in Recife, Brazil and recently have been working in Afghanistan. Bob is currently working with a YWAM team in Thailand. He and Magda will be in Brazil, for the months of July and August, teaching at the YWAM Recife base. In the Fall, they plan to go to Pakistan for 3 months to teach at a School of Evangelism with Pakistan students. Please pray for the door to open wide and for the needed funds and visas to go into Pakistan. RAY & MARGI BRADBURY ARGENTINA The Bradbury s pastor the Potter s Hands Christian Center, located just blocks from the national parliament buildings in the Congreso District of Downtown Buenos Aires. They are presently meeting in a rented building; however, they need to secure a permanent location. Their facility is rapidly becoming inadequate to meet the many needs of their growing congregation. Congreso needs to know that they are here to stay. They must know that they are a permanent voice and that their commitment to them as well as to Christ will not fail. Their son Jeff, also assists full-time in the work with worship, teaching and youth outreach. DON & MARIE-JOSÉ MANN South africa After 3 years in Zambia, Don and Marie-José are now based in Pretonia South Africa. Their main focus in both South Africa is to come alongside pastors and church leaders with the goal to: Encourage and equip existing churches to work together with emerging leaders toward the simplicity of the Acts 2 church. Another aspect of their ministry is to empower people in developing nations to become selfsustaining. ed & natasha dickson Eastern Europe Bethel Sarnia has been very involved with the missions work of Ed Dickson in Ukraine in the last 3 years. What many do not know is that Ed s ministry extends beyond Ukraine. Ed s ministry, Loads of Love, is also actively involved in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Russia, Afghanistan and China. The ministry is focused on three targets: helping orphans, reaching out to forgotten seniors, and sending messengers of light into dark places.

7 MISSIONARY RESTRICTED NATION This Missionary couple has the privilege of serving in a Restricted Access Region which is 97% Muslim. There is a very small percentage of Christians. They are working with local believers who feel God s call to evangelize and plant churches. They do this by training them in the Gospel. The work is very rewarding but often very difficult and at times dangerous. Pray for God s protection on their lives and those they train. Pray for boldness for the national workers as some will literally lay down their lives for the Gospel. Pray for courage for those who become Christians are often rejected by their family. God often speaks to people hungry for truth through visions, dreams, and supernatural signs and wonders. Pray that He will reveal Himself to millions in this way who may not otherwise learn about Jesus. mati & julie gali brazil YWAM Recife works with different social projects, with a specific focus on the younger generation which are children at risk. Each year they train and mobilize more than 100 students and volunteers and have 70 full time missionaries. Although the economy of Brazil is thriving, extreme poverty is very common in the cities and all across the country. Because of this crime and violence are ramp everywhere, spiritism and witchcraft oppress many people from knowing the Lord in a personal way. Please pray for people to be open to hear the gospel. Mati and Julie will be hosting teams that are coming for massive evangelism during the World Cup (soccer) as the nations are coming to Brazil. mark & tammy griffin germany Mark Griffin and his wife, Tammy, serve as PAOC Global workers in Germany. Although Mark has a background in worship, evangelism, and youth ministry, the ministry has been primarily pastoral and missions since the year The Griffins have been living in Europe as their primary residence since the summer of In the spiring of 2013, they opened a leadership training and church planting facility. In cooperation with churches, denominations and networks, the Griffins are part of a catalytic, proactive movement which desires to see leaders equipped and churches planted - churches that will continue to plant other churches; thus expanding God s Kingdom. MISSIONARY RESTRICTED NATION This missionary has a burden to minister to impoverished families and children in Southeast Asia. There are literally tens of thousands of children displaced from their homes due to much civil unrest and natural disasters. Parents struggle to meet the basic family needs (food, clothing, shelter, medical). Their long term vision is to develop a care center for needy children. The centre would help meet their physical needs but would also provide opportunities for selfimprovement through English teaching programs, technical and vocational skills training, counseling and more. They have begun the work by launching ESL programs in local villages and in a Bible college. MARK & SHARON DAVY NORTH AFRICA Missionary Evangelist Mark Davy has preached the good news of salvation, healing, and restoration through Jesus Christ for over 28 years and in over 75 nations of the world. Often notable miracles have accompanied his ministry including deaf ears and blind eyes opening, the lame walking and even the dead raised. Over the past 13 years, Mark has seen over 2 million decisions for Christ. Mark is a Canadian evangelist with a heart for Canada and the local church, often ministering in Canadian churches across the nation. His primary missions work is in Sudan and Northern Uganda. MIKE KERYCHUK SOUTHEAST ASIA Reaching Kids International is dedicated to meeting the spiritual, physical, and educational needs of at risk children in third world countries. Most of the children where RKI serves are bound in incredible poverty who have no chance of escape unless Christians help. Most of the countries where RKI serves in are Buddhist and so they pray to spirits and hope for good luck to help them in life. Most of the areas are very impoverished and it seems that the government works against them. A true revelation of Christ would break these strongholds!

8 local outreaches Crisis Pregnancy Centre The Pregnancy Centre in Sarnia exists to provide support, care and education in the difficulty that comes with an unplanned pregnancy. The Centre provides services to women, teens, their partners and parents who are feeling these deeply personal issues. The goal of the Pregnancy Centre is to provide a safe place by providing education, post abortion care and relationship counsel. The Centre does not provide nor refer abortions. NEIGHBOURLINK Neighbourlink is a local help line which mobilizes hundreds of volunteers from 20 local churches to work together to respond to needs of their Lambton County neighbours. Whether it is giving a senior a ride to a doctor s appointment, tutoring a child, or helping a disabled person with a home repair, church volunteers can express their love for God and their neighbours in real and practical ways. The Rock on campus The primary goal of The Rock On Campus is to provide Chaplin services to students and staff on community college campuses. Chaplains seek to be there for students and staff, offer friendship in confidence, listen to, pray for, and provide spiritual care as requested. Dan Helps is currently serving as the Rock on Campus Chaplin for Lambton College. Bethel Sarnia At Bethel, we believe that Missions should start at home. We have many people right here in our own community who need to know the love of God through Jesus Christ. As funds are raised in our missions giving, we become involved in a variety of outreach efforts and support various local ministries. Past outreaches of Bethel into our community have included: Neighbourhood picnics, Family Fun Day, Kids Adventure Week, The Solid Way, Divorce Care, Cancer Support Group, Rescue Junior High Program, support for The Landing, etc.

9 The Responsibility & Reward of Fathers By: Kim Gibb This June 15th is a very important day - Father s Day. A day to honour and thank both natural and spiritual fathers for the influence they have in our lives. When my husband dedicates children to the Lord, he always says to the parents God has given you a great responsibility and a great reward. While this applies to both parents, a father s role is of great importance. 1ST - RESPONSIBILITY The Bible teaches that the father is the head of the home under Christ. He should be a presence that is felt in the home through his leadership, gentle love and his worship to the Lord. It is imperative that a father be a spiritual man before his wife and children. No challenge is clearer than the one the Apostle Paul gives in Ephesians 6:4; And you fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. The father is specifically given the challenge to raise his children in the training and admonition of the Lord. He did not give it to the mothers, though the role of a mother is very important! He did not give it to a day care or a babysitter, nanny or grandparent. The call is not even given to the school or even the church. The call is to the fathers! In assisting my husband as a youth pastor quite a few years ago, one of the frustrating things we, and I know many youth pastors have, is when a parent expects the youth pastor to fix their child and to do it in a few hours a week in a youth meeting. However, some parents are not willing to put their time and effort into the situation with their teenager, but puts the responsibility on the youth pastor and the church alone. This is not in order. The church is there to support but it is the responsibility of the father to invest in, not just the physical care of their children, but also in the child s social, emotional and spiritual well being. Children need to be taught from a young age the value of God s Word and a Christian worldview and morality. They need to be taught that God s ways are not to restrict us from life but are loving boundaries that give life meaning, safety and blessing. Children need the loving security of discipline and boundaries from a father. Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but discipline will move it far from him. We have a crisis in our society today of crime, violence and ever expanding prison population. Much of this can be attributed to the societal problem of absentee fathers from the home. The loving discipline of a father is very much lacking and very much needed in our society today. There is a security that comes to a child when loving discipline and boundaries are established early. Fathers not only bear a great responsibility but also will be held accountable for how they have lived their lives and influenced their children. These things need to be taken seriously. Now, no parent is perfect. We will make mistakes in our parenting. But how we handle even our mistakes, with grace and forgiveness, will have a huge influence on our children. 2ND- REWARD On the other hand, there will be great reward for investing into your children in the things of the Lord. Proverbs 22:6 says Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. There is a saying that goes: It is easier to train a child than it is to fix an adult. Psalm 127 tells us that children are God s gift to us. It goes on to say that children are like arrows in the hands of a warrior. Fathers are to be warriors for their families. An arrow is used for a purpose and is aimed in a direction. Fathers are to speak purpose and direction into the lives of their children. Even in this immoral and increasingly anti- Christian society, I believe that spiritual fathers leading spiritual homes will raise up spiritual children. For those whose children are in a place of wandering and rebellion, do not underestimate the power of your prayers and the spiritual influence that has been sown into their lives. Believe God s promises over your children and see the reward of God in their lives. In closing, I would like to declare a blessing over all the wonderful fathers, both natural and spiritual fathers in Bethel. I cannot count the many times I have been blessed, and sometimes had a tear come to my eye when watching the loving interaction of one of the young fathers with one of their children. To make a child feel valued and loved is so important. Dads, never get too busy to make time for play and hugs, and don t forget teenagers need that too! (even if you have to steal a hug or sneak a side h ug!). A father s role is a great responsibility but it also comes with great reward. I know the Lord has a very special reward for all the men who have risen to their responsibility as father s. Please know that you are valued by our Heavenly Father and your church family also. Thank you for allowing me to teach your little ones with you. It is a joy to teach the pre-school kids program at Bethel. Along with covering receptionist duties in the Church Office on Fridays, Kim leads the Pre-school kids program on Sunday mornings.

10 UPDATE ON BETHEL S COMMUNITY CARE & SUPPORT Like most churches, Bethel provides spiritual and practical support for all those connected with our church and their wider families. We provide discipleship and training opportunities with around 150 different people meeting each week in one or more of our small group activities. That is on top of our children s and youth ministries and those that are primarily social events such as Keenagers. In addition we provide the usual ongoing pastoral support which includes hospital, nursing home and house visits, counseling, financial guidance, and support to meet a wide variety of circumstances. However, many of you who have come to Bethel in the last 12 months may be unaware of our involvement in providing practical support to our church family and the wider community. We do this primarily through 2 vehicles: WeCare and Helps. WECARE WeCare is a support fund generated by those attending Bethel through regular or specific monetary gifts, or through special offerings which we promote when the fund needs boosting. Through this fund we help people in our church facing difficulties with unexpected bills, illnesses, financial difficulties and even legal issues. The aim is always restoration and providing folk with the chance to achieve stability in their handling of issues, but sometimes a timely boost changes the impossible to the manageable! In addition to the Bethel family, we support the wider community from our WeCare fund primarily through a Christian organization called NeighbourLink which operates in the basement of the Sarnia Evangelical Missionary Church at the junction of Talfourd and East Street. NeighbourLink, an organization of volunteers from 20 local churches that work together to respond to the needs of our community, is owned and governed by its Sarnia-Lambton member churches through an elected Board of Directors. Bethel is one of those churches which financially support NeighbourLink and assist them in meeting the needs of the local community. As part of our missions budget to the local area, we donate $3,000 to NeighbourLink each year which, together with financial support from other churches, meets the operating budget of this organization, which has a part time director and volunteer staff. NeighbourLink provides a needed community focal point where people with needs can be linked with the support organizations in the City like the Salvation Army, the Inn of the Good Shepherd, St Vincent de Paul whose financial support comes from The United Way and similar organizations. NeighbourLink also provides much needed advice and guidance though its links with local government and relief agencies. When people facing utility disconnections, evictions etc. come to NeighbourLink or such organizations they can be helped to avoid such catastrophes. We are often asked to help is such rescues, and we provide financial help from our WeCare fund probably 5-10 times a month to those in the wider community; we usually have no connection with or knowledge of the individuals or families concerned. With governmental cuts and rising utility bills, the demands on local care organizations is growing every year, and Bethel continues to have a vital role in such support. We gave unconditionally some $23,871 in 2013 and $17,704 in 2012 to meet the various needs outlined above. The total in 2014 up to the end of April was $6,901. roughly half goes to meet the needs within our church family and half to those in the local community. Your continued financial support for WeCare is vital as we try and ameliorate hardships and difficult circumstances in our church family and surrounding community.

11 HELPSMINISTRY We set up the Helps Ministry in the Fall of 2009 to meet the specific needs of those within our church family. Those needs cover a whole range of issues: meals, transport, visitation, minor house repairs, assistance in moving house etc. Help in difficult times is vital: meals after giving birth or surgery, helping in house moves, getting people to appointments when public transport isn t available. The list is endless but we always try to be there for people when we know help is required. In truth, the Lord has been so good to our church family that the needs have been relatively few, but having such volunteer support in the background is vital to a growing community like Bethel s. Admittedly, there is much that goes on outside the Helps Ministry within the body, that dynamic of help and caring which happens naturally in this church, where support and care is given faithfully, sacrificially, and usually quietly behind the scenes! However, the Helps Ministry is a vital component of our care at Bethel; it kicks in when friends and family are not there in a particular situation. We currently have 152 people who have volunteered to help in one of more of the categories above. To date, 63 different people have helped meet the various needs in Bethel over the last 5 years. Each month we have a coordinator who deals with the request coming into the office. Some months there have been no request - others have had several needs. We thank the following ten ladies for their continuing faithful service in undertaking this role of monthly coordinator: Christy Allen, Connie Elliott, Patricia Karr, Liz Kielt, Deborah Lapier, Debra Lawrence, Rozanne Leystra, Grace Ouellette, Lynn Rodenhuis and Sylvia Vanderwel. The Helps ministry is all about the giving of an individual s time to serve others. If you are new to Bethel and you would like to participate in the Helps Ministry, do let the office know so we can add your name to our list. As you can see from the statistics above, the call on your time will be very limited, but when the call comes you will be meeting a definite need. Our special thanks to all those of you who have responded in the last 12 months to support the Helps and WeCare ministries.
