2 Letters to Home Hi Mom and Dad, We had a great time in Canada with you in early August. Always fun to visit family and see your great grandkids. School has launched this year and the kids are fully back in the swing of things. We are back into the groove as well at church. August was an awesome month with the Chicken BBQ working well and the Missions Auction a great success! The Teen ministry kicked off their school year and we had 57 youth in attendance. That ministry is working so well and we are excited to have Micah Hudson leading an awesome team of adult leaders. Already I can see the influence these youth are having in their schools. This month, the youth will be holding their fish fry that will help fund the mission trip to Fort Wayne, Indiana during fall break. I hope you two can come and join us on September 8 th. There will be lots of good food to eat and even better fellowship. This fall we are working on our values as a church, so we can stay on target in our ministries. I find that this church loves ministry with others and believes, if we are making a difference in peoples lives, they will come along. You can see this everywhere. I just finished teaching on the book of Ephesians. In that book of the Bible, Paul speaks of the body of Christ in the world. How we, as the church, are the body of Christ to carry out his work, and we are uniquely gifted, not only as individuals, but also as a body of believers, to carry out God s work. That will be a theme for this year to understand how the body works in carrying out God s mission. Peace, Todd, Rhonda, Jordan, Elijah and Hannah It s time to SHOW UP for A national, church-owned, school based mentoring program to build a relationship focused on a child s emotional, social, and academic needs. One child, One hour, One church, One school We are hoping to add to our team of mentors for the school year. If you are interested in giving and in receiving gifts of time (just one hour a week) and love, please contact Rita Smith for more information. Call/text , smithrathome@hotmail.com Step out of your story and into someone else s. David Staal, president of Kids Hope USA Let s show Christ s love to our community as we serve together at this year s Fall Carnival Tuesday October 31 st 6:00 8:00 pm Mark your calendars so that you can come and be a part of this exciting night and help us greet the public as we welcome them to our church. You may be the personal, friendly connection that they need to take that first step to make that connection to Christ. Ways you can help: Serve by working 1 or 2 hour shifts at game booths Helping with set up or tear down Working in the kitchen Donating bags of individually wrapped Candy Donating hot dogs and buns More information will be available in the Rotunda in October. Please help us make this a spectacular event for families and children in our community!

3 From the Kids Hope USA book Show Up: The world often changes two people at a time; one person making a difference in another person s life. Would anything have changed if an adult had consistently shown up in your early life, like in elementary school, and encouraged you? The young man paused. If someone had been there for me, I wouldn t have needed a gang to feel like someone cared for me. None of this would ve happened. It s crazy what hope can do. A life can change in a moment. Especially when someone shows up and remains willing to stay around long enough for that moment to happen maybe within a few minutes maybe over a few months maybe even longer. Availability really does trump rules and administration. As does simplicity over complexity. No matter how hard you try, you cannot make a miracle happen for yourself. But you can put yourself in position to help a miracle happen for someone else. What many people need most in this world is one person, just one, willing to spend time, to offer encouragement, to prove that there IS someone who cares. Who listens. Smiles. And along the way stubbornly believes in the goodness that exists in every heart - young or old. Someone whose simple presence paints a hope-filled picture of how life could be. Or should be. YOU COULD BE THAT SOMEONE!!! Monthly Morsel As iron sharpens iron, we need confrontation and truth from others to grow. No one likes to hear negative things about him or herself. But in the long run it may be good for us. - Dr. Henry Cloud Proverbs 27:17 says, As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. It is hard to be on the receiving end of a tough truth about ourselves. However, Christ calls us to be humble enough to allow truth to enter our lives. When we do this we are saying I want to grow, I want to grow in my maturity and in my relationships with others and with God. The truth is, every single one of us has rough edges that need smoothing out. God uses us to help each other grow and to bring us to a deeper brotherly love and respect for one another. When we are open to hearing a truth about ourselves, see it as a gift of growth given because God loves you and wants to develop you. And don t forget, when you share a truth that may be hard for someone to receive, do so with love and grace. After all, that is how we all want to be treated. FINANCES: Thank you for caring so much! For last week of July, August 2017: Giving Online Quick General tithes/offering: $44, Debt Reduction: $ 6, Wow, what an outpouring of love!!!

Rotary Meal Preparation Help Still Needed!! We are excited to have some new volunteers and greatly appreciate the generous commitments to help each Tuesday. However, we are still looking for others to assist, so if you want to have fun in the kitchen, contact Linda 574/ A big Thank you to the members of the Wesley Weds class and to Micah and the Youth group for all the support in making the Chicken BBQ a success again this year. Thank you to everyone who worked Friday night, and those who made cakes, prepared food, sold tickets, helped with clean-up and resetting the worship center and for all who faithfully came for the chicken dinner. Without the help of countless people, it could not be successful. Also, a special thank you to Dean and Marilyn Barbour and Dave Smith for all the hard work in preparations. Couldn t do it without your help. Thank you. Janie Smith I would like to thank my church family for all that you did for me during and after my surgery. I know that many people prayed for me and I am grateful. Thank you to all that visited me in the hospital and at home. Thank you for all the cards and meals. It is so great to have a church family. Debbie Hyman The Missions committee would like to express our heartfelt thanks for making our first Harvest Auction a success. Thank you to Dwaine Ward for his excellent auctioneering and for his advice in so many areas. Thank you to Maudeen for keeping the auction moving along and for adding fun to the experience. Thank you to staff who organized the mission s worship service. Many decorated, recorded sales, collected money and more. There were so many who willingly and joyfully supplied vegetables, meat, baked goods and so, so much more! Thank you to the congregation for buying all the goods for mission projects. Most of all now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen Ephesians 3:20-21

5 Have you noticed all of the bees swarming around the trash cans recently? It seems that any trash receptacle that is open and outside is suddenly attracting every bee in the neighborhood. It happens every summer July-August, and I had never really paid attention to the timing until someone pointed it out to me. Basically, the pollinators have run out of a natural food supply; the bees (and some wasps) you see swarming outdoor trash bins are HUNGRY they are looking for food! In beekeeping terminology, this lack of nectar is called the dearth, and some beekeepers actually feed their bees this time of year to keep the hive from losing numbers. At first I thought, How can this be? There are all kinds of flowers blooming right now. But the more I observed my garden, the woods, and even the roadside ditches from a bee s perspective, I realized that, this time of year, there is a huge gap in nectar-producing plants. Many flowering plants (including weeds) are done blooming. Even the white clover in my lawn, which the bees were all over several weeks ago, is pretty sparse now. The late-summer/fall bloomers, like Goldenrod and Aster, have not started yet. The good news is that, in a normal year, the fall nectar-producing plants will start blooming soon and the bees will be able to recover and store enough food for winter. In the meantime, be extra careful while dealing with trash and recycling containers located outdoors. Please don t spray/kill the bees (it won t help anyway, because more will come, unless you make the trash can inaccessible to them). If you re a gardener, consider planting some nectar producing plants next spring for July and August blooms: Agastache (Hyssop), Joe Pye Weed, Catmint, Caryopteris, and perennial Salvias and Veronicas, to name a few. There are lots of bee-friendly plant lists available online. Bees would MUCH rather get their food from a flower than your trash! FUN FACT: Did you know bees can t see the color red. They will actually avoid red flowers because it looks gray to them, which they dislike. I wonder if they would avoid a red trash can **Creation Care is a ministry at Delphi UMC focusing on caring for our earth for generations to come to enjoy and appreciate. For more information, see members Dr. Dawn Frank, Wanda Duff, Anita Force, Jill Clothier, Keith Kalish, or indicate your interest on your Orange Connect card. Important Dates for 2017 Listed below are some scheduled 2017 Delphi UMC events. Mark your calendars now to see how you can get involved. 6 Congregational Ministry: Caring for mind, body and spirit of all Blood pressure checks When/Time: Sunday, September 3 rd, between services Where: Office Area Why: Being a good steward of God s gift of life and health! Prayer Ministry Love grows more through our time spent in prayer. The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved shared by Victor Hugo. Love is the first requirement for mental health spoken by Sigmund Freud. Jesus spoke in multiple passages in the bible about love and how important it is in every believer s life. One of my favorites is in 1 John 4:7-21. Please read this sometime and meditate on it, allowing God s love to deepen in your life. One of the special ways of showing love for God, ourselves and others is through our time spent in prayer with our loving father who showed the greatest amount of love by sending His son, Jesus, as a sacrifice to take away our sins and provide our place in Heaven with Him. Ministry Fair Opportunities for Congregational Caring: Stop by our table and learn more about these ministries. Prayer Chain Ministry phone call or Card Ministry keep in touch with our church family (homebound, nursing home residents, surgery patients, and others) Meal Ministry assisting with meals for new parents after childbirth, post-op patients, shut-ins and others. Contact Connie Hughes at 765/ or at parishnurse@comcast.net. Why, you might ask, do we ask you to fill out the orange Connect Cards? Do we want to know who s here? Yes! Are we tracking attendance? Yes, we ARE tracking attendance. WHY??? For a couple of reasons: We want to stay connected with our members and visitors. We report our attendance numbers to the Indiana Conference each year. These numbers are important; they show the conference that our church has a growing attendance, that our church is inviting and meeting the needs of those coming through our doors. We are your church. Your needs are our concerns. Connections to ministry opportunities, prayer requests, praises, volunteering - all essential for staying connected! Help us please, to make this reporting more accurate fill out the orange Connect Cards.
