8 2014 NMI Convention We were honored and blessed to have Dr. Lindell and Dr. Kay Browning with us at the 72nd Annual NMI Convention. The Brownings spoke on the work on the Eurasia Region and requested prayer specifically for the Christians in Iraq. Dr. Kay read Psalm 121, which has been the scripture they have claimed as their promise while they have served in the Middle East. They shared reflections on their service over the years: (1) Incredible opportunities for evangelism, training, and outreach are now possible in the Middle East due to globalization, the advancement of technology, and the Internet. (2) When faced with difficult and important decisions in our lives, God will give one heart and one mind. (3) Make every effort to keep a balanced outlook on the world you live in. (4) Plans and strategies for ministry are important, but always leave room for the mysteries of God. (5) The church is in good hands. God is calling young people to do new things, in new places, in new ways. The South Carolina District gave $544,987 to the World Evangelism Fund. We are 113.3% for World Evangelism Fund. You are making a difference because of your support of World Evangelism Fund and by overpaying the World Evangelism Fund. Congratulations to the following churches that paid/overpaid the World Evangelism Fund: Ashwood, Bamberg, Batesburg, Beaufort, Bennettsville First, Bishopville, Camden First, Cayce, Charleston Calvary, Charleston Sea Islands International Community, Chester, Clemson-The Bridge, Clover, Columbia Abundant Life Fellowship, Columbia First, Columbia Grace, Duncan LifeSpring Community, Florence Family Life, Fort Mill, Greenville First Greenwood Community, Hartsville Calvary, Hartsville First, Honea Path Genesis, Lancaster SonLight Community, Lexington Shepherd, Lugoff Faith, Manning New Start Community, Midland Valley Community, Moncks Corner, Myrtle Beach-The Connection, New Ellenton New Life, Orangeburg First, Orangeburg Memorial, Pelion, Rock Hill Emmanuel, Rock Hill First, Rock Hill Grace, Rock Hill Trinity, Simpsonville LifeSpring Community, Summerville, Sumter Calvary, Sumter First, Sumter Wise Drive, Wallace, Walterboro First, West Columbia Central, West Columbia First, Winnsboro, and York. 9 Making Christlike Disciples. It s the heart of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19. It s the essence of our denominational Mission Statement. It s what every follower of Jesus has been commanded to do until He comes again. I am convinced that most everyone who has been in the church for any length of time knows what we ve been commissioned to do. Pastors preach on it and teachers teach it regularly. What I am not as convinced about is that we are actively engaged in seeking to fulfill it. Disciple making is not something we can do in our spare time. As one would plant a garden and then meticulously care for it until the harvest, discipling also requires that attention and care be given in leading someone to faith and fruitfulness in Christ. Here are a few observations about disciple making that I think we should keep in mind as we seek to fulfill the call of the Great Commission: We must serve and live under the authority of Jesus. Jesus knew His disciples would need a source of power beyond their own to accomplish the mission He was giving them, and we do, too That source was to be himself Jesus told them that all authority in heaven and on earth had been given Him by the Father. They were to go in the authority brought by His living in them. Accepting His commission would lead them to an Upper Room, prolonged prayer, and a fiery baptism that would alter their lives forever. There they learned a simple yet profound spiritual reality. You cannot experience the authority of Jesus to serve Him until you come under His authority to lead you. We must act on His command to Go It is a literal impossibility to fulfill the Great Commission unless we are willing to Go. The where, when, and what to do when we get there are up to Jesus, but go we must if we are to disciple the nations. Scripture is clear that His vision was for the world, but it began for the disciples and will for us in our Jerusalem. We must all seek to be disciple makers. Everyone can be involved in making disciples for Jesus To be an effective disciple maker does not require multiple soul-winning courses but having a heart that cares for the souls of men. It will require that we involve ourselves in building relationships with others in such a way that they will see the sincerity of our love and concern for them. It will likely be out of this genuine Christian concern for them that opportunity will come for us to share our faith in Christ with them. Finally, we must do this until He comes again Our mission is not finished Jesus is coming again one day for His church, and my prayer is that when He does, He will find us going and making disciples of all nations.. In His Service, Dr. Jim Thrower August 16, 2014 Prime Time Area Leaders' Meeting, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at Florence Family Life
