3 Dear Galloway Family, August 2010 Remember what I wrote you in the June Newsletter: LET S GET TOGETHER THIS SUMMER I m not talking about worship on Sunday, of course, I hope to see you at worship! I m talking about hiking in the woods, paddling down the river, riding the bike trail, boating on Lake Erie, going on the over-50 s Duckytour in Pittsburgh, immersing oneself in Christian music at Creation, attending the Aldersgate Conference on the Holy Spirit. Of course, there s also a nice long motorcycle ride, sitting around a campfire, and a round of golf. I am desperate and hungry for some relational time with you outside of the church building. Come up with an idea, and we ll see if Susan and I can join you. Well that didn t happen. I wrote that before Susan s dad died and six of our family members moved in to spend the summer with us. I am still desperate and hungry for some relational time, but as life goes family first! This has been a great family summer. It s been great having Jessica, Paul and their boys, Paul (4) and James (10 weeks), along with Erika and her son, Liam (4) living with us. They are here now and will soon all be gone, so we are enjoying them while we have them with us. WHERE ARE YOU GOING WITH THIS SERIES? That s the question someone asked me after I preached the introductory sermon for the series I m calling Contradictory Christians. I wish I would have asked, Why do you ask? But I didn t. I directed them to II Timothy 3:1-5: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God having a form of godliness but denying its power. Verse six goes on and says, They are the kind who You can fill in the blank yourself, but this is how I see it. They are the kind who go to church and say one thing, but live very different lives. They are the kind who go to church and are struggling with how they can change because they are tired of living empty lives. Contradictory Christians will speak to both as it will call into question behaviors that do not honor God and lift-up a relationship that will lead to life. For each of us, my hope and prayer is that what we believe will match how we live and how we live will bring honor and glory to God. Here are the topics we ll look at in August that imply some real contradictions that may exist in our lives: You Say You Believe in God - But are Ashamed of Your Past (8/1) You Say You Believe in God - But Won t Forgive (8/8) You Say You Believe in God - But Don t Think You Can Change (8/15) You Say You Believe in God - But Trust More in Money (8/22) You Say You Believe in God - But Not in His Church (29) Looking forward to living a more consistent Christian life with you. John Seth, Pastor P.S. Initiative for the sermon series came from a book by Craig Groeschel, entitled Christian Atheist. Check him out on 3

6 DreamBIG! Fulfilling God s Plan Together I Have a Dream for Children s Ministries It s God s Plan! WHAT IF WE CHANGED THE WAY WE LOOK AT CHILDREN S MINISTRY? Galloway Church loves kids! Mrs. Amy and I love seeing their faces when they get It, when they finally understand that they are part of the bigger God story, when they can truly hear His voice among the busyness of life, when their parents are actually engaged in their spiritual lives, when they are a part of families compelled by God s Spirit and who live in His presence, allowing Him to move in their hearts. Together, with the folks at David C. Cook and ministry workers like us across the country, God s plan for families is alive. We are excited to be a part of this new approach to spiritual formation. What if 1. having a relationship with God was more than simply making Him a friend on Facebook? SPIRITUAL FORMATION What if kids could build a real relationship with God that would thrive and grow into adulthood? Spiritual formation moves beyond Bible stories and scripture memory to growing kids who know God in a personal way. It s about a lifelong relationship with Him so that even at an early age, kids can open themselves up to God and come to Him with their concerns and burdens. Too many of our children are turning away from their faith once they reach adulthood. What if you had a resource that develops their spiritual formation at an early age and sets a solid path for future spiritual growth? 2. we could truly equip parents to be the spiritual leaders for their kids? FAMILY IS PRIMARY - In most cases parents are simply unsure of themselves and how to spiritually guide their kids. But what if you had a resource that encouraged and taught parents how to help their child in his or her spiritual journey? Wouldn t it be amazing to watch a parent become the spiritual hero to their child? And a church with the right resources can help them. 3. understanding the Bible was more about living Scripture than simply learning it? FORMATIONAL VS. INFORMATIONAL- We all realize how important it is to absorb God s Word in our daily lives. We can do this in two different ways: informationally and formationally. The first is of the mind - reading scripture and understanding it factually. The second is of the heart - allowing God to transform us by His power and will. Both are vital for our spiritual journey. What if we taught kids the Bible and how to hear God s voice? 4. kids grasp that God can guide their lives? ACKNOWLEDGING THE HOLY SPIRIT - Even at an early age, God can speak to our hearts and lead us through the Holy Spirit. What if we provided an atmosphere to help them look to God for wisdom and guidance? 5. kids truly understood their role in God s epic narrative? GOD S BIG PICTURE - kids love movies. While there may be many sub-plots along the way, they learn to understand that there is a bigger picture to the story. And, what kid doesn t imagine being an actor in a movie? It is the same with the Bible. God has a master plan, and He has a part for each of us to play if we so desire. Once kids learn to understand God s big picture, they will realize the meaningful life they can live with God. WHAT IF TOMORROW IS TODAY? PARENTS OF CHILDREN AGES NB- 6TH GRADE JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6:30 FOR A PARENT ORIENTATION! In His Love, Kim Simons, Director of Children s Ministries Amy Smith, Director of Early Childhood Ministries 6 For the latest updates on the Children s Ministries at Galloway, please pick up a Children s Ministry Newsletter outside of Camp J.C.

7 OUTFLOW everyday outreach for everyday people People enriched by a relationship with God to the point of overflowing into family and friends, the community and world. No formulas to master or points to memorize, simply becoming immersed in God s love and overflowing May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 Life that s not half empty Life that s not half full Life overflowing. If what the Bible says is true (and we believe it), then your life isn t meant to be anything like half a glass of water. God created you to be so perpetually full of rich experiences, rewarding relationships, and abundant blessings that you can afford to pour out huge amounts of hope, comfort, and refreshment on others and still have more than you ll ever need! The water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4:14 Imagine your life as a fountain the old-fashioned, four-tiered kind of fountain. God is the source, and your heart is the first level of that fountain. God is pouring his blessings into your life filling you to the brim with his love, joy, and hope. Then the moment comes when you are so full that you can t possibly contain it anymore. Maybe it s a drip a first a small bit of hope trickling from your life into someone else s but it isn t long before the water is flowing freely and spilling into the next level of the fountain, and then the next, and the next. God s love unabated overflowing from you into the lives of your family, friends, neighbors, community, and the world. Outflow is outreach like you ve never experienced it before: natural, everyday, overflowing. Outflow is about a richer relationship with God. A relationship like it was intended. Powerful. Intimate. Constant. It s about a conversation that never ceases a conversation with a God who is constantly filling you up with his love, his power, and his blessings. Outflow is about overflowing with God s love into your friends and family the people who are closest to you and the people you desperately need to see and experience the joy of Jesus love. Outflow is about a living legacy a legacy that will last long after you re gone. It s about reaching your world the world God has placed you in. It s about being known for loving God and loving God s people. Outflow is about overflowing into our community. It s about reaching out with God s love to everyone around us. It s about natural and relational ways of engaging with the people of our communities. It s about serving them with no strings attached. It s about loving them with God s love. From September 12 October 17, Outflow will help us explore >> How God s love can overflow through us >> How we can have a richer, more meaningful relationship with God >> How we can share God s love with our family and friends >> How we can overflow with God s love into our community >> How we can change our world through the power of God s love RIGHT NOW WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE OUTFLOW HAPPEN. PLEASE VOLUNTEER Creative Team Help the theme come alive: create banners, living altar with river and water falls, drama, dance, etc help us experience God s love. Worship Team Come and find out the weekly themes so all our music compliments the messages. We ll be looking for weekly special music and need musicians and singers. Life Group Hosts We ll double the number of Galloway Life Groups for six weeks so we need folks to host new groups. Want to explore the possibility, materials and training will be available Wednesday, August 4th at 7:00 PM and on Sunday, August 8th at 9:45 AM. Publicity Help us get the word out. Help us create flyers, posters, invite cards, etc. WANT TO HELP VOLUNTEER PLANNING MEETINGS first week of August. Contact me at seth@gallowaychurch.org or call

8 REACH CONNECT GROW SERVE HONOR SUMMER IN REVIEW Creation 2010 From June 29th to July 4th, seventeen youth and adult leaders attended Creation festival in Mt. Union, PA. We had an amazing time getting to know one another on a deeper level, all while enjoying God s creation as we camped for the festival. We were challenged on a daily basis by amazing speakers like Bob Lenz and Louie Giglio, as well as having the opportunity to interact with God through praise along with somewhere around 60,000 of our brothers and sisters in Christ. On top of all of this, we were able to enjoy some amazing music from major Christian artists, and worship through loosing our voices for God. The festival was dusty and dirty, and there was not an inch of your body that we could keep completely untouched by the dirt. Yet even in the midst of all the mess, God is able to make us refreshed and feeling cleaner than before we went. We had a blast and look forward to attending the event next year, and hope to see more of the church attending with us. Director of Youth Ministries, Dan Culbertson Tackling the basement floor to replace a leaking sewage line. Pittsburgh Project Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. Ephesians 6:7-8 Six youth along with myself and another leader had the chance to serve at the Pittsburgh Project. Everyday we were given some time for prayer and devotions, as well as some time for worship and a short message, but the majority of our day was spent serving needy homeowners in the Pittsburgh area. The girls (Stephanie Carr, Hannah McCarthy, and Erin Botts) helped to replace windows, paint, and do a handful of other odds and ends jobs for an elderly women who was desperately in need. The guys (Mike Smith, Hunter Butler, and Tyler Frankenberger) had the unique responsibility of replacing a sewer line in the basement of a couple who had been living in the house with sewage leaking into their basement for over 11 years. We also painted the foundation of their house to make it look more presentable. Every student got to work hard and be the hands and feet of Christ. They all got to see God work in the midst of toil and service. Overall the trip was a wonderful chance for us all to be obedient to Christ by serving people in need. Our youth at Creation 2010 Director of Youth Ministries, Dan Culbertson 8

The only way we can experience positive change is by dependence on the Holy Spirit. Not only is the believer regenerated by the Holy Spirit in new birth, but is also exhorted to be filled with the Spirit, directed and empowered. A life that yields to the Spirit will reveal the fruit of the Spirit. But unyielded hearts will become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Which will we choose today? The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, and self-control. Prayer: Heavenly Father, You have said, many are the plans in a man s heart, but it is the Lord s purpose that prevails. We ask you to fulfill Your Word and make Your purpose reign in our lives. We all have plans and goals that are pursuing, we ask You to establish whatever is from You. Whatever is in line with Your purpose, and cause to fade away whatever is not from You. We honor You as our Creator and as our loving heavenly Father. We affirm that it is You who work in us to will and to act according to Your good purpose. Renew Your plans more fully. Lord, we realize that You are a God who knows the secrets of the heart. Reveal those to each one of us if we are not seeing the plans. Show each one any place in our lives where we could be harboring sin in thoughts, words, or actions that we have not recognized. Enable us to be willing to give up meaningless and unfruitful habits that are not Your best for our lives. We pray this in the name of Jesus, who is our way, truth, and life. 10 So you want to be a missionary? You re invited to join your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to experience missionary work right here in Franklin! ProAmerican Educational And Cultural Exchange, Inc. is looking for host homes for foreign exchange students. There is an immediate need for host families for this upcoming school year. Students provide their own spending money, insurance, and airfare. Families provide room, board, and love. This complex is a home away from home for those who may not have one. Residents are free to come and go as they wish and are encouraged to go out into the community. Many have needs that require some type of monitoring, such as medication. Sugar Valley Lodge is like a small community. There is the Java Hut with some of the residents in charge. Folks stop in for a cup of coffee or snack. Those in charge make the coffee and clean up. A caring staff help residents feel at home. What a meaningful ministry provided for residents of Sugar Valley Lodge. Clothing swap update: A special THANK YOU for the Clothing Swap. A very dear friend has been in a local nursing home since April. She was to start physical therapy to help her get walking again but has been unable to find shoes that would fit. Her feet swell and she wears a size 11W. I stopped by the Clothing Swap last week to check out the shoes and found a pair of 12W they had rubber soles and no inside seams that would cause her discomfort. We brought them to her, and she checked with the therapist, and they will work. She took her first short walk on Monday and is very excited about upcoming progress. If all goes well we hope to get her home in October. The clothing swap has blessed and ministered to many in the community! We need your help to keep this ministry alive! Volunteer Needs: Planning Team Sorters Builders for clothing racks + Greeters and Minglers on Wednesday evenings, 6:00-8:00 PM Plans are to get rid of summer clothing and close for the month of August to gear up for Fall. We will meet to reorganize after the week of Mega Sports Camp! Questions? - call Karin or Michelle

11 Testimonies from Aldersgate Looking Ahead to Aldersgate 2011 Twenty-three of the Galloway family attended the 2010 Aldersgate Renewal Ministries National Conference on Spirit-filled Living. The conference was in Charleston, West Virginia. The theme verse for the conference set the tone for all that took place, For I will pour water on a thirsty land and streams on dry ground. I will pour my Spirit upon your descendants and my blessing upon your offspring. -Isaiah 44:3 Many of us who went did not realize how spiritually thirsty and dry we were. We were given the opportunity to drink from the fountain of life, enter into the river that gives life, and become immersed in the amazing love of God. These comments express the blessing Aldersgate was: I felt that Aldersgate was a meaningful experience personally to me. I went because I needed some time away. Having just lost my Dad, I was feeling sad. Having just lost my job, I was feeling discouraged. I was overwhelmed with caring for my mother, children and grandchildren this summer. Once I got there, I realized that I need time to be with my God. The power of the Holy Spirit was great, and He proved to be all I needed and so much more! One of the speakers spoke about those who are thirsty need only to ask to be filled again, and they will be filled to overflowing. Well, that was certainly true for me. Susan Seth During the conference there were excellent speakers and preachers that had great messages of which did apply to my life. During worship time, it s as if I could feel God s presence right there with us. I actually had goose bumps most of the time. I also for the first time witnessed healing in front of my own eyes, which was pretty amazing. I had prayer for healing of my body which did not at that moment work for me. I have to admit that I was a little jealous of the ones who did. I am still waiting in expectation of what the Lord has for me. However having said all that, I had no major life changing experience or word for my life while I was there, or so I thought. When I came home I was happy I went, but at the same time a little disappointed that nothing major happened to ME personally. I sat down and looked at the Bible and just started reading a scripture that jumped out at me. It happened to be 1 Corinthians 3:1-3. This whole experience really opened my eyes to the kind of life that I wish to live and I believe having a personal relationship with Christ has a lot to do with how much you give to him. I would recommend this conference for any Christian at any level. I would also like to write on behalf of the children s ministries at Aldersgate. My daughter Sydni attended all the sessions and very much enjoyed them. The security of the children was top notch. She learned a lot while she was there, and I could already see the seed that was sewn in her from this. She said she would love to go back next year! - Traci Aldersgate has been one of those mind altering, life changing events for me. What can I say except WOW! Absolutely amazing worship, incredible life equipping sessions, mind altering teachings and life changing prayer ministry!... I highly recommend that you would begin considering attending one of these conferences. You will not regret it. -Barb the acts of God are what still has my mind reeling. The number of people I saw healed right there in front of my eyes. Person after person being slain in the Holy Spirit. Just to be a part of that would have been enough, but our God had more in store for me. After one of the equipping sessions a couple, Justin and Melissa Lowe, asked if they could pray with me. They anointed me with oil and prayed for me. As they prayed for me, they spoke of things that many of my closest friends are not aware of. During this time of prayer I started to feel tingling sensations, then a feeling of being filled with something, a total fulfillment. I believe it was the Lord filling me with the Spirit. God pouring into me, saying I m with you. In conclusion, the things that I saw at Aldersgate 2010 were life changing, but the things that I felt were life sustaining. 1 Corinthians 2:9 No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived What God has prepared for those who love him. -Chad It s only been recently that I came to understand what serving God really means. Serving God is not about finding what you think he wants you to do in the church. Serving God, I found, is allowing God to work through me in order to further his Kingdom here on earth. You see, I have been trying to do what I thought not what God thought. The theme for Aldersgate 2010 was UNLEASHED - Isaiah 44:3. I shared at a small group pray session that I found myself as a sponge. I get filled with God and the Holy Spirit, but hold back passing it on through me. I need to be rung out occasionally. If not, I will just sit around and dry out. I came to realize that it s not about what I do; it s about what God does through me (truly serving God). I now realize that it is pretty simple. All I need to do is be willing to tell my story. God will do the rest. Aldersgate 2010 has shown me that I cannot out think God. -Jim We ll have one more testimony next month about the Gate (youth ministry), but start looking ahead to Aldersgate It will be held in Dayton, Ohio, July Galloway will once again be doing a group registration. Stay tuned for more information. 11

The program is intended to make a nutritious midday meal available to students when school is not in session, to help families whose children are eligible during the school year for free and reduced-price lunches, and to extend nutrition to children who aren t yet old enough to attend school. The summer program has no income guidelines, so any family that has children up to age 18 is welcome to participate, including those who have infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Families do not have to register to obtain meals. Children may just report to one of churches on any day they wish to eat lunch. Funding from CDC and the federal Child and Adult Care Food Program covers the costs of the lunches.
