3 Letter from your Minister I can remember a couple of Christmas s ago writing an article for the magazines about Mary and Joseph entering the city of David just in time for the birth of Jesus and looking for an inn or guest room and being told there was no room. I can remember saying that the word for inn came from the Greek word kataluma. A kataluma, comprised of a shared family space, where the people lived together upstairs and the animals were stabled downstairs and that this, could have been the space where Jesus was born. The city of David on that occasion referred to Bethlehem, King David s ancestral home. Now as the end of his life approaches, Jesus enters the other city of David, Jerusalem. He sends his disciples off to look for a room to celebrate Passover, which he knows will mark the end of his life. It is interesting to note that the upper room is from the same word in Greek that is translated as inn in Luke 2: 7 - kataluma The Passover meal then eaten with friends was filled with Exodus symbolism, retelling the story of God leading the people of Israel out of Egypt from slavery to promise. Lamb was eaten with bitter herbs recalling the bitterness of slavery and bread made without yeast remembering the threat and the need to leave in a hurry. Maggie Dawn, in her book, Giving it Up, also expounds that the bread Jesus broke and shared was not just any old piece of unleavened bread but rather a piece broken from that set aside, along with a special cup containing wine. This bread and wine was for Elijah, symbolising the promise of his return, the hope of the coming Messiah. When Jesus broke this bread, he wasn t only taking the ordinary things of life to help his friends remember him by, he was taking traditional symbols of the hope of salvation and imbibing them with new and fresh meaning. It seems that Jesus began and ended his life in borrowed rooms, at first downstairs and then upstairs but all the time turning ideas of what it was to be a King and a Messiah on their head. Not a king in a palace or a priest in a temple but a person with friends in a borrowed space. Come and similarly be with friends on Maundy Belfairs Methodist Church at 8pm, as we once again celebrate and make Jesus presence real at the feast. Rev. Julia March
4 Highlander New Road Methodist Church Launched As The Fishermen s Chapel This year New Road Methodist Church is celebrating its launch as The Fishermen s Chapel, emerging as a music, arts and community-based initiative connecting with the flourishing arts scene in the Leigh and Southend area. Project manager Juliet Kilpin says, The chapel is one of those buildings that often goes unnoticed, yet it houses a beautiful resource for the community and harbours a rich history of faith which is precious to the identity of Old Leigh. Alongside the worshipping congregation that continues to meet on the first and third Sundays of the month, several groups now use the chapel regularly. These include resident cartoonist, Dave Walker, and Tuesday night regulars The Show Choir. There are many who have already discovered the captivating beauty of the chapel, says Juliet, but we hope that people who have not yet discovered us will come along and check us out and maybe even join in the adventure of re-imagining how this sacred space can continue to serve the local community. For further information see Rev Julia March 2014 (We wish our friends at New Road/The Fishermen s Chapel every success in their rebranding. Ed. Annual Church Meeting Please sign up for the Buffet Lunch to be held after the Morning Service on 20th April, Palm Sunday. The Annual Church Meeting will then follow at about 1.00pm.
