6 CLIPPING SERVICE 1115 HILLSBORO RALEIGH, NC TEL.(919) LEADER PRINCETON, N. C. ~~l DEC-J. ~-84 \ From the parsonage ' The meaning of "Holiday" "The real meaning of Christmas is being forgotten" has been a complaint for many years. Although it has been true, we have let mistletoe, tinsel and Santa Claus replace the baby in a manger, not until recently ba ve stores been so bold in solid ting your business while refusing to use tbe name "Christrpas." Although the season is exploited to its fullest with twenty-five percent of the year's sales and about fifty percent of the year's profits coming from the holiday period, many stores never use the word. This bland holiday celebrating "you know who" is a calculated rechristianizing of the holiday. It makes non-christian religions more comfortable as they explcit it They wish to wrap your packages for a fee, sell you their foods and sell you 1 supplies; but they won't use the name. As you leisurely walk through the typical mall, or visit a discount house, look for the word Christmas placed there by the store. The word Christmas is usually merely on the product placed there by the manufacturer rather than the merchant's promotion. Watch for holiday greetirgs and holly leaves without so much as a reference to which holiday it is. Our living in a land that is fastly rechristianizing itself makes it imperative that we tell people, "... God so loved the world, that he gave his Cllly begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." L. Edgar Whitlock Princeton Baptist Church

7 - CLIPPING SERVICE 1115 HILLSBORO RALEIGH, NC TEL.(919) LEADER PRINCETON, N. C. DEC From the parsonage 'Great A wakening' needed? There was a strong religious interest among all the colonist settling America. It was a heinous thing to have_ no religious belief. It was an unpopular thing to belong to the Presbyterian or Baptist Church in Massachusetts and to some degree elsewhere. Not only was skepticism, Atheism and separatism (Baptist etc.) frowned upon, but were condemned as being sinful. Especially was delights and pleasures condemned by the Puritians. This religious concern began to die just prior to the work of the great theologian-mystic Jonathan Edwards. The new generation of American-born were less strict than their fathers. They needed to be called back to the faith. Religion was at one of its lowest ebbs in America. Everyone belonged to the ranks of Christendom, but few claimed conversion. It was an unregenerated membership. Jonathan Edwards was born into a world where religion was popular but heart-felt faith was scarce. There was no freedom to differ on any theological issues. He came as a light to light the fires of revival that transformed America and prepared her for the independence that would make her great. Revivalism came to American but with great pain to the traditional churches. It was called "The Great Awakening." The revival spread from Northampton, Massachusetts to many other communities throughout the colonies with many other pastors engagirg in it. Outstanding among the other revivalists were Tennent and the evangelist George Whitfield who came over from England to cry out against sin. In 1736, he had followed his friends John and Charles Wesley to Georgia. He frequently spoke to audiences of 20,000 or more and averaged preaching three. times a day. There were many lasting results of these revivals, and it has been estimated that the number added to the churches during "The Great Awakening" was from 60,000 to 100,000. Between 1740 and 1760, one hundred and fifty new Congregationalist Churches in New England besides the great number of Baptist and Separatist Churches were established, Many of us believe America again reeds a great awakening. It will not come from- the great and might of the earth. It will come from the almighty as he choses to work through his very ordinary servants on the earth - the ones who give themselves unreservably to him and his service. L. Edgar Whitlock Princeton Baptist Church.
