2 I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord. Psalm 122:1 I am excited to tell you that my installation as Pastor is scheduled for Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. Bishop Wells will be preaching and presiding. I hope that many of you will be able to be here for the celebration. So many wonderful things are happening here at Central Lutheran Church. We are worshiping God together every Sunday morning, hearing the Word and sharing the Meal. Our children are learning about God s creation in Sunday School. Our confirmands are studying scripture and catechism. Adults are learning about Luther and the Reformation and participating in regular Bible studies. Our neighbor s children are learning that, After School Matters, through our On The Corner ministry. Preschool children are learning the stories and songs of our faith in weekly chapel. Musicians are proclaiming God s grace and love. Quilters are sewing and tying quilts for our neighbors who live far away. Shut-ins receive regular visits and communion. Prayers ascend for those in need. Our committees have been hard at work looking at spending plans for next year and determining the best possible stewardship of the gifts God has given to use to show our love for God and neighbor. There are so many opportunities to worship and serve God and our neighbors here at Central. I hope you will participate as often as possible and invite your friends. Blessings, Pastor Carolyn 2

4 THANK YOU Dear CLC, Thank you so much for Awarding me such a generous scholarship. It was truly An honor unlike few I have received in my life. For aiding me in pursuit of higher education, you forever have my thanks. We purchased 12 copies of each. The Bibles, Catechisms, Honoring Our Neighbor's Faith and curriculum leaders guides will be used for years to come! Felicity Pittman, Christian Ed Director your help. The decorations committee is looking for some items to borrow for a harvest theme in November. We're hoping for a dozen corn stalks, 9 wooden apple boxes, a largish (2-3 ft) upright houseplant with dark red leaves. If anyone has any of these they would loan us please contact the church office at Jane and I will do the transport. 5 Women Gathering will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Pat Ubelaker. All women are welcome to join the group. It s always a time for laughter and lively conversation. Reformation Sunday Fair Trade Coffee Tasting Party Sunday, October 30, 2016 after worship in the Fellowship Hall Lutheran World Relief partners with Equal Exchange to help small farmers get a fair price for their coffees, teas, and cocoas. These are high quality products grown with love by small farmers. Come, learn more about fair trade, and taste a variety of coffees and teas. Vote for your favorite to be served here during fellowship time. Installation Service With joy and thanksgiving to the Holy Spirit, the Rev. Happy 90th Birthday Wishes to Mae Hansel Mae was born in Nebraska October 12th, She married Harold Hansel on May 5th, 1945 and celebrated 66 years together. Harold and Mae had two children; Lucille and Robert, four grandchildren; Maria, Lisa, Robert Jr. and Debra, two greatgrandchildren; Erin and Alec and one great-greatgrandchild; Apollo. They moved to Yakima in 2000 to be closer to the great-grandchildren and watch them grow up! They joined Central Lutheran 5 Church at that time as well.

8 We still need adult volunteers for our 3rd and 5th grade class (3:30-5:30) and tutors for the Study Hall (4:00-4:45) and a couple of people that can stay until 5:15. We also need subs for when our regular volunteers are away. If you have any questions about these positions please contact Denise at denise.svendsen@clcyakima.org Items Needed: Jeans Punch cups, glass or plastic for the kids to make Christmas gifts. Candles: Old or new. The kids will melt them down to make Christmas gifts. A huge thanks to Joe Lenberg and Jean Gunderson for our new OTC sign. Also, thank you Bill Harrison and Jason Moos for helping Joe get the sign put up. It's nice to let people know that OTC is located here at Central Lutheran Church after 5 years of of supporting families in our community. Thanks to Kristy and Paul Larsen OTC now has a ping pong table. It is located in the new Multipurpose Room and available for anyone to use. Thank you to everyone who has sponsored a student at OTC. If you are a Thrivent member you can sponsor 3 students through your membership using Action Team Dollars. Contact Jay for details. VETERANS STAND DOWN and Benefits Fair will be held on October 22nd at the Modern Living Building at State Fair Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for all veterans. Central Lutheran will begin collecting jackets, sweatshirts, hats, gloves and blankets for the Veterans. Watch for more information and drop off boxes here at the church. 8

9 On Friday, October 7th, Christ Lutheran Church will be sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive from 12:30 5:30 as their way to participate with the God s Work Our Hands day of service. They have invited Central Lutheran to be a part of this service opportunity. Their goal is 20 units of blood and will need to have at least 30 people signed up prior to October 7th. Please contact Kathy Sebree at or Christ Lutheran Church at if you would like to donate blood on Friday, October 7th. 9

10 Halloween is almost here! Last year we had more than 1,500 children come through Central Lutheran to trick or treat and play at our "carnival". We're hoping this year will be as successful as last year, but we need your help. If you are available to help our Youth and Family committee on October 31st please call the office or Felicity We will need help decorating, setting up, helping during the event, cleaning up and handing out candy. If you are unable to help on Halloween please consider donating candy, there is a box in the Narthex to place donations in. 10

11 Come to Oktoberfest 2016! Sunday Afternoon October 9 th 1pm-4pm Where: 6201 Englewood (Willis yard) Parking will be at Christ Lutheran Church with shuttle to the house, starting at 12:45. Christ Lutheran is at the corner of 56 th and Lincoln. Cost: $10 per person or $20 per family. Buy tickets after services, or call to make your reservations You are welcome to invite friends and neighbors. Food & Beverage: German themed meal of bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, and genuine soft pretzels. Local and congregational craft beers, hard cider, root beer floats and apple cider. Desserts will also be available for a donation. Musical Entertainment will include traditional accordion polkas and festival songs. There will be yard activities for kids as well as tables and chairs for dining, and chatting. Wear comfortable clothing to be outside in the October sunshine (we hope!). This is a fun CLC tradition of fellowship that is back by popular demand. It is also a way to raise funds for Habitat El Salvador, long supported by CLC. Please bring your checkbook. 11

Carolyn Hellerich as senior pastor on Saturday, October 8th, at 5:00 p.m. at 1604 West Yakima Avenue Yakima WA. Bishop Martin Wells, Eastern Washington Idaho Synod, is preaching and presiding at the installation. All clergy are invited to vest and process. The color of the day is green. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall 12
