2 Dear Friends in Christ, This fall our adult Sunday school class has been learning more about the possibility of becoming a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation. RIC congregations are churches in the ELCA that have welcome statements that specifically welcome and affirm people of all gender identities and sexual orientations. This is an issue that many of us have not grown up knowing much about, but it is something that often arises in today s news. We are using our Sunday mornings to educate ourselves and learn what scripture and our church can teach us. I would like to invite you to participate in our discussions on Sundays, but realize that many of you cannot be here in person, so I want to use this space this month to address some frequently asked questions. We already welcome everyone into our church, why should we single out LGBTQ people? Unfortunately, many LGBTQ people have learned that the general welcome statement from churches doesn t include them, or they are invited in only to be told that their sexual orientation and gender identity is sinful. What are the goals of the Reconciling Works organization? Here is a statement from their website: We believe that God values and embraces each person as a beloved child, that the Spirit gives a diversity of gifts for the common good, and that Jesus Christ calls us to work for justice. The ministries of ReconcilingWorks embody, inspire, and support the acceptance and full participation of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, their families, friends and allies, within the Lutheran communion and its ecumenical and global partners. Through our Reconciling in Christ program, ministries, resources, events and alliances, ReconcilingWorks: builds community for worship, education and support; fosters welcome and acceptance in all Lutheran settings; advocates for the ecclesial changes necessary to ensure full participation in all rites, sacraments, and ministries of the church; and invites all people into Gospel lives of authenticity, integrity, and wholeness. What is the process and what would it mean for CLC to become RIC? The process includes: 1. Educating ourselves. 2. Writing a welcome statement for CLC. 3. Approving the new welcome statement at a congregational meeting. 4. Notifying Reconciling Works of our vote and being listed on their website. There are no membership dues or obligations to the organization. I encourage you to learn more about Reconciling in Christ congregations by going to the website, reconcilingworks.org and click on resources. Feel free to come to me with any questions or concerns. Let s keep Expanding Our Welcome! Peace and Blessings, Pastor Carolyn 2

7 October Camp Hope Meal Items must be to the church by Sunday, October 7th Items Needed: 15 lbs of Hamburger (cooked) oz. Cans of Hunts Manwhich Original Sloppy Joe Sauce 60 Hamburger Buns 3 - Large Coleslaw (each should feed about 15) 2 - Costco Veggie Trays 5 - Cases of Pop (only one should be diet) 8 - Dozen Brownies 1 - Costco size package of heavy duty large paper plates If you want to help deliver, serve and cleanup the meal (5:30 to 7:00) please contact Denise Svendsen at / On The Corner If you have even half an hour to give...we can use you! We could still use volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 to 5:30. You can either help out kids from K-5th in Study Hall, working with them on their homework, or interact with kids while they are at education centers. We need an additional adult for 5th grade kids (Tues or Thur 3:30 to 5:30). You would be responsible for getting them to and from their daily activities (just follow the schedule) where they are led in enrichment by other adults. NEW COOLERS NEEDED: When helping load the food for Camp Hope, I learned our coolers are a back or hand injury waiting to happen. Each of the coolers have broken handles. That meant I had to lift at the wheels to help load the large cooler full of water bottles. Now that summer is almost over, maybe you realized you don't use that large cooler anymore. Please consider donating your unused two handled cooler to church. These coolers are also used by the youth and family. Thank-you, Nicole Pierone 7

14 Council Corner October 2018 Hymn 824 This is my Father s world, And to my list ning ears All nature sings, and round me rings The music of the spheres. This is my Father s world: I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas His hand the wonders wrought. Last year in October I shared one of my favorite hymns #879, For the Beauty of the Earth. I have decided to share another of my favorites. I can remember singing This is My Father s World when I was very young. I have always loved singing since I was a very small child. In fact, I remember my favorite part of church as a young child was always singing the hymns. No offence to Pastor Carolyn when I say this, but I was always glad when the sermon was over because I knew I would get to sing a hymn. Of course, that was from the perspective of a young child. As an adult I have come to appreciate the lessons, gospel and sermon on a new level. I still love the hymns and music in our services. I especially love to be able to share my vocal talents and sing a solo in the choir every once in a while. This brings me to our recent Temple Talk on Stewardship. Bill Harrison asked us to share of our talents and also share monetary gifts to support the work of the church. Many of us share our talents in different ways. Some share their musical talents by singing in the Festival choir, playing in in the handbells, or playing an instrument for a service. There are those who serve on the alter guild and prepare the alter for the service. Others serve as readers of the lessons. Some are ushers, greeters or run the sound system, while others serve as communion assistants or as a Eucharistic Minister who visit the homebound. Let us also not forget the people who make the coffee and provide the cookies. There are also many people who volunteer at OTC or on Wednesday nights providing dinner. Thank you to all who volunteer to help fulfill the mission and vision of Central Lutheran. Please remember to fill out your time and talents card and return it to the church office. Prayerfully consider what talents and monetary gift you can offer to keep the vision and mission of Central Lutheran Church moving forward. In Peace Anne Chapman CLC Council President 14
