2 Dear Friends in Christ, November is the month when we give thanks to God for all our many blessings. This year, I am especially reminded of the line from the Magnificat in Marty Haugen s Holden Evening Prayer, You have looked with love on your servant here, and blessed me all my life through. I have lived many places in my adult life and had the privilege of serving this church in several different callings in several different states. A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of going back to the place where I grew up and reconnecting with friends I had not seen since the day we graduated from high school. This visit gave me the opportunity to see some of the connections in my life and how God has worked in all these many and various ways. This picture is of me and my best friend from fourth grade, Sharon Taylor McGlone, when we first saw each other again. I was invited back to Spotsylvania County, Virginia, to be part of a panel discussion about desegregation in the public schools and what it was like for the children involved. I was honored to be chosen as the white ally, the girl who made friends with the four new girls who integrated our school in The National Park Service funded this forum, and a large museum exhibit, along with videos of all of us sharing our stories. I will share the videos when they become available. You can go to the museum website at jjwmuseum.org/ thewallscomedown/ and see pictures of the exhibits. I lost touch with my school friends when we all went off to college, partly because technology wasn t as developed as it is now, and partly because we never socialized outside of school. In those days, in Virginia, it was okay to be friends at school with people of another race, but not to go to each other s houses or be seen together in public. We reconnected through Facebook a few years ago, but didn t get to see each other again until this trip. We discovered that all five of us had worked in social services and everyone is now in a helping profession. My friends all said they were not surprised that I am a pastor. I was deeply touched by that because the little girl me could never have imagined it. For one thing, women weren t being ordained back then. I couldn t even be an acolyte. For another thing, I was a very quiet little girl and never would have seen myself speaking publicly about anything. Yet, my friends had a vision about the future that could include me preaching the gospel and themselves living in a world where children are not judged by the color of their skin. I give thanks for the many changes in the world since Even though things are not yet where God would have us be, the progress I do see shows God's activity and gives me cause for hope for the future. Peace and Blessings, Pastor Carolyn 2

5 ALL SAINTS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 4th On this day we celebrate and remember the saints of the past, present and future. We especially remember those saints who died this past year: Frank Abrams, Freda Calahan, Gerald Puyear, Mark Karn, Jean Hamilton-Upson, Martha Loewe, and Doug Gordner. And those saints who were baptized this year: Alexia Dobbs, Jase Lybeck, Michael Evert QUILT SUNDAY On Sunday, November 11th, the beautiful quilts that the Piecemakers group has been working on all year will be on display in the Sanctuary. You will have the opportunity to purchase a quilt to give as a gift for Christmas or for yourself to snuggle under on the coming cold winter nights. Through the generosity of some folks who have donated fabric for the quilts, the cost for a quilt will not be increased. The quilts that are not sold will be given to many help organizations throughout the community. All proceeds from the sale of the quilts will go back into purchasing supplies such as batting, backing, and whatever else is needed to make more quilts. Many thanks to all of the dedicated quilters of the Piecemakers group. They all give at least six hours a month to this wonderful ministry. The ladies meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday in Room 107/108 beginning at 9:00am. Here is an image If anyone has seen a pair of salad tongs (claws), silver, that hang on the side of a salad bowl, please return to the church office. They belong to a church member and have sentimental value, as they were a gift. They disappeared following the Doug Gordner funeral, and possibly were taken home by accident in another church member's salad. 5

October 28, 2018 Last November I used this hymn to start my November council corner and reflected on the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation. It was important to look back last year at the changes since the Reformation. Now it is time to look forward. As I sat in the choir at today s Reformation service I looked out at the congregation and saw the pews full of people wearing red and saw all the red banners hanging throughout the sanctuary. Our sanctuary looked very welcoming and festive today. Thanks to Jane Peterson and Kris Vestad for fixing the sanctuary for the service. For this next calendar year, the council has selected an overall congregational focus of Expanding our Welcome. This theme was selected because of our church mission and vision. Our mission states that Central is a welcoming and caring community of faith, reaching out in service to others to meet the needs of our neighbors locally and globally. And our vision is that our congregation is committed to seeking and welcoming diversity as we reach beyond our boundaries to our larger community through faith, fellowship and in service to others. Just last Sunday we welcomed some new members to our congregation. If you have not already done so please meet them and start welcoming them into the CLC family. To expand our welcome the council formed a new committee in the last year called the Invitational Ministry committee. Their mission is to help spread our message through evangelism. If you are interested in being on this committee and helping with this mission contact Lea in the CLC office. Many hands make light work. Here are two examples of how you can help with our mission and vision in the near future. Denise Svendsen is coordinating two needs in Yakima. The first is continuing to coordinate food to be given to Camp Hope. Denise is also coordinating volunteers who can help at the young adult emergency winter weather shelter which will start up soon at Englewood Christian Church. This shelter is for year-old youth who need a safe and warm place to sleep this winter. If you would like to be a part of either of these two outreach ministries for the homeless in our community you may call or Denise at denise.svendsen@clcyakima.org. Selma Umbarger is coordinating ringers for the Salvation Army again this year. There are several other Salvation Army opportunities to help our community in 14

15 November and December. Contact Selma at The congregational focus is meant to happen in all aspects of our congregational outreach from our youngest members to our most senior members. Look for other opportunities to Expand our Welcome in the next few months. On another note The Annual Meeting will take place on Sunday, November 18 th after the service. This is where we will vote on the 2019 Spending Plan and also elect Council, Endowment, and Audit Committee members as well as three synod assembly delegates. If you are willing to attend the Synod Assembly as a delegate contact Lea in the office. After the meeting there will be a potato feed as a fundraiser for our youth activities. See you at the annual meeting. Anne Chapman, Central Lutheran Council President Mission Statement (What We Do): Central Lutheran Church is a WELCOMING and CARING community of faith reaching out in service to others to meet the needs of our neighbors locally and globally. Vision Statement (Desired End-State): Our congregation is committed to seeking and welcoming diversity as we reach beyond our boundaries to our larger community through faith, fellowship, and in service to others. Congratulations: Trevor Babcock became an Eagle Scout at the start of the Boy Scout meeting at Central Lutheran Church. 15

22 God s Work Our Hands Emergency Winter Shelter for Young Adults years of age Again, this year, the Englewood Christian Church is sponsoring this project. It is part of the Transform Yakima Together outreach. As we looked at projects for our community outreach the idea of making a cozy quilt for these young adults came to mind. The Piecemakers quilting group at Central had a huge box of 6x6 inch precut squares and on the Sunday that we participated in God s Work-Our Hands, we started to lay out the quilt tops. Next the quilt tops were sewn and bright colored fleece was donated to back the quilts. Many participated in this project as supervisors to the layout of the quilts, as well as those who did the sewing. Thirteen quilts will be delivered the first week in November, in preparation for use starting November 15 th. If the shelter needs additional quilts, we have kits prepared to quickly sew and distribute. Thank you Mary Johnson for coming up with such a wonderful project. Hospitality Committee Meeting will be held Monday, November 19th at 2:00pm. The location is at the Newsroom Coffee & Tea, 5702 Summitview Avenue. 22
