5 November Abbylynne Johns November is a really fun time of the year. You have the fall season where you can play with the leaves and pile them up, then jump in them and have fun. You have Thanksgiving when you go out of town sometimes, you see your family, and eat as much food as you want. November is a very pretty time of the year with the fall colors. Fall is a beautiful time of year when the leaves change and then they fall on the ground. I believe that a lot of people love fall. It is a fun season. November has many celebrations. There s many national days that we shared in the last Tiger Times and holidays. That is the fun part about it. The best part is that students don t have school toward the end of the month and get to spend time with family. 5/13

By Dezirae Terry and Daja Curtis Terrorist Attack in Paris By Sadie Kelley On Friday, November 13, Paris was attacked by terrorists. The attack killed atleast 128 people and injured 180. The attacks ocurred at normal places like cafes, soccer games, or theatres. The most violent scene on this attack was at the Bataclan Concert Hall. There, Terrorist killed and took people hostage. When people finally escaped, it was so violent, that they had blood splattered all over their clothes. Before this occurred, a bomb went off at a soccer game outside of the arena. People started to panic, then a second bomb went off and killed several. Residents and tourists could hear the bombs exploding and gun fires across the whole city. Suicide bombs exploded and killed the terrorists, residents, and tourists. After the attack, Isis actually said that they were the cause of the attacks on Social Media. A: Because i enjoyed going to school so much that i thought teaching would be the next best thing and because i wanted to make a difference in other people's lives. 2. 9 ~European Christmas Traditions~ Many of the holidays we celebrate started in Europe and other continents. What holidays we celebrate in America today are different than in Europe. Take christmas for example. That holiday started in Finland and is celebrated all the way down into South Africa. This article will be full of more famous Christmas traditions in Europe. Christmas may not be celebrated the way we celebrate it. But they have their special traditions that make the holidays simply wonderful and special to those countries. In this article I'll be showing you some special traditions for the holidays celebrated by Europe. Let's start with Finland! Finland Unlike most Christian countries, the highlight of the Finnish Christmas celebration is Christmas Eve and not the day itself. In the old town of Turku, the former capital of Finland, a special ceremony is held to declare Christmas Peace, starting at 12 o'clock noon on Christmas eve and lasting for twenty days. The tradition of declaring Christmas peace is known to date back to 13th century. It used to be common to all the Nordic countries, but only in Finland has it been maintained almost uninterruptedly up to our days. In the declaration, the citizens are wished a merry Christmas and prompted to spend the Christmas time peacefully, avoiding "noisy and rowdy behaviour". Russia Christmas in Russia is most widely celebrated on January 7, according to the Orthodox calendar. New Year's Day, January 1st, precedes the Russian Christmas and is often celebrated as a more important holiday. However, some Russians celebrate two Christmases and even two New Year's the first Christmas celebrated on December 25th, and the second New Year's observed on January 14th. Any public trees, like the Christmas Tree in Moscow's Red Square, will also serve as a symbol of the New Year. (link) France In France, Christmas is called Noel. This comes from the French phrase les bonnes nouvelles," which means "the good news" and refers to the gospel. In southern France, some people burn a log in their homes from Christmas Eve until New Year's Day. This stems from an ancient tradition in which farmers would use part of the log to ensure good luck for the next year's harvest. Italians call Christmas Il Natale, meaning "the birthday." On Christmas Eve, children leave their shoes by the fireplace to be filled with gifts from Pere Noel. In the morning, they also find that sweets, fruit, nuts and small toys have been hung on the tree. Germany The Advent wreath (Adventskranz) is adorned with four candles, one of which is lit on each of the four Sundays preceding Christmas. The first Advent wreath, which appeared in the mid 19th century, had 4 larger candles and 19 smaller ones. Each day one additional candle was lit to help the children count the days until Christmas. Today only the four larger candles remain. 9/13

10 However, the tradition has been exported to many other countries around the world and was adapted to existing customs. The Advent wreath of the Eastern Orthodox Church uses 6 candles to last through its somewhat longer Advent season. The Advent wreath has been attributed religious and elemental significance. The tradition of a ring of light existed among the Germanic tribes many centuries before the celebration of Advent. It is believed that fewer candles were lit with each progressive lighting to represent the shortening of the days until the solstice, at which time the Julfest celebrated the return of light. (Incidentally, the English word yule is a cognate with the Germanic Jul). Advent, Advent...ein Lichtlein brennt erst eins, dann zwei, dann drei, dann vier dann steht das Christkind vor der Tür. Poland Polish people start by celebrating Christmas Eve just like America, but they celebrate it in a different way. They start by sharing oplatek. Oplatek is a thin wafer made from flour and water. It is one of the most beloved Polish traditions. They share the Christmas wafer before Wigilia, the Christmas Eve supper. The head of the household is the first one, along with their wife, to break the wafer and then share it among the others at the Wigilia table. Wishes of peace and prosperity are givin. Not only do the people get some of the oplatek, but they give small pieces to the animals as well. There is a legend that if you give the animals a piece of the oplatek to eat, then at midnight they will be able to speak Polish language. But only the people with pure spirits will be able to hear them. Belarus The Christmas in Belarus is a major occasion for celebration which the tourist must not miss out on since it spans for over a month. The Christmas in Belarus is celebrated actually twice since it's a Catholic country, on the 25th of December and on the 7th of January respectively. There is also a pagan element attached to the Christmas in Belarus where along with the celebration of the rise of the new god the old deities of the Belarus are not absolutely forgotten. The interesting blending of the old and the new makes the Christmas in Belarus an unique event. The most symbolic factor categorizing the Christmas in Belarus is the Kolyada or the Christmas carols. Simultaneously a visit to the church or the cathedral is an important ceremony reinforcing the religious aspect of the Belarus Christmas. The tourist will see plenty of common people visiting them in the large cities of Minsk and in the Grodno Region along your Belarus travel. Another component which chiefly enhances the festive mood for Christmas in Belarus are the elaborate feasts were boiled rice is taken with raisins and honey, several pies as well as gammon and a goose. Along with these, dishes are also made out of mushrooms; the herring, vereschaka, boiled fruits, oats kissel are the other traditional items in the Christmas feast. To crown it all the tourist can also taste the nuts and raisins mixed which are added to the several dishes. This is indeed an interesting innovation. The whole atmosphere that characterizes the Christmas in Belarus is fascinating with the natural surroundings finely spread in the enormous sheets of frost and snow. With beautiful and bright garlands and small green and silvery Christmas trees adorning the landscape, you will experience an 10/13

11 enriching view of this Belarus Holiday. Denmark The whole month of December is dominated to Christmas. In most towns, the main streets people shop on are decorated with christmas lights and fir garlands. In gardens, there are Christmas trees as well as city squares. Most of the trees are decorated with fairy lights. A custom dating back in 1914 where the first Christmas tree was lit in Town Hall square in the town Copenhagen. Over the years it is common to cover other trees, besides Christmas trees, in fairy lights also. Most Danish homes participate in the Christmas Eve count down. By Megan McGhee and Lily Jewell THanksgiving The story behind Thanksgiving_ The Pilgrims who sailed to America were originally members of the English Separatist Church. Before going to America, they had fled to Holland to escape religious persecution. Although, in Holland, they enjoyed more religious tolerance, but they eventually became disillusioned with the Dutch way of life. In the hope of a better life, they took the help of a London stock company to move out to America. Most of those making this trip aboard the Mayflower were non Separatists. Only about one third of the original colonists were Separatists. They reached Plymouth in There, they had to face a terrible winter. Around 46 of the original 102 had died by the next fall. But fortune turned in their favor and the harvest of the next year was better. And the remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast, including 91 Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. It is believed that the Pilgrims would not have made it through the year without the help of the natives. The feast was more of a traditional English harvest festival than a true "thanksgiving" observance. It lasted three days. Governor William Bradford sent four men fowling after wild ducks and geese. 12 certain that wild turkey was part of their feast. However, it is certain that they had venison.
