1 John 15:4-5 Issue #38 No. #2 November 20 th 2011 Advent what is it? Well, we are getting into that Holiday time of year again. This first Holiday coming up is Thanksgiving. Most people like Christmas better than Thanksgiving, but I would have to say that I like Advent better than Christmas or Thanksgiving. Advent is the four weeks leading up to Christmas. Advent is a time where we slow down and focus on what the true meaning of Christmas is! There are four candles you light for the Sunday of every week. The first candle is the candle of Hope, followed by the candle of Peace, then the candle of Joy, and finally the candle of Love. Sometimes we stop there at the forth candle, but there is another candle which is the most important: the Christ candle and this candle is lit on Christmas Eve. 3 Thanksgiving With Thanksgiving coming up this week, I thought it would be a good time to talk about the real meaning of Thanksgiving. There are many different ideas about the meaning of Thanksgiving. Some think that Thanksgiving is when the Pilgrims thank the Indians for helping them grow their harvest. Others take Thanksgiving as a good time to teach children about American Indians. Most of time, we get too wrapped up in the business of the holiday to even ponder the meaning of this important holiday. William Bradford explained in his journal of Plymouth Plantation that Thanksgiving is a day where literally giving thanks to God. Not to the Indians to God! It all started back in the year 1608 in Scrooby England. There was a group of people called Separatists who were separating from the Church of England. This group of people where separating from the Church because they did not agree with what the church taught. Therefore, the Separatists had church in their homes and worship the way they wanted to. Once King James found out about this he had the Separatist leaders persecuted and even killed. He was not about to let a group of people disobey his standards and laws. Not liking the persecution and tyranny of King James, the Separatists secretly left England. Because King James would not let them leave freely the Separatists went by twos and threes into small fishing boats, across the English Channel to Holland. The Separatists happily lived in Holland for 11 years. Then news got out that the King of Spain was going to declare war on Holland. Knowing that the King of Spain was Catholic, the Separatist knew that they had to leave Holland. Separatist leader, William Brewster suggested that they travel to America. There they could worship freely without fear of persecution. So it was decided, the Separatists would leave for America. They found two ships; The Mayflower and the Speedwell. Unfortunately, after 3-4 times of trying to get the Speedwell out to see, it was declared unseaworthy. So finally in 1620, 102 Separatists got on the Mayflower and started the long journey to the new world; America. The journey was long and the Separatists - now know as Pilgrims were not used to rocking boat. Many of the Pilgrims got sick from the rocking and lack of fresh food. Finally, in the fall of 1620 the Pilgrims saw their first sight of America; their new home where they could worship freely. They landed at what is known today as Cape Cod and started Plymouth Plantation. Soon, cold weather arrived and they were not prepared for the cold winter months which lay ahead of them. That winter was the hardest winter that the Pilgrims would ever experience. They had lost more than half their number, only the strongest survived that first winter. In the Spring of 1621, the Pilgrims were encountered by an English speaking Indian. His name was Samoset and he introduced the Pilgrims to Chief Massasoit of the Pokonoets tribe.
4 One of the Indians, whose name was Tisquantim - also known as Squanto, was especially interested in helping the Pilgrims build houses, and plant seed. Squanto was an amazing help to the Pilgrims and he taught them how to plant in this new land. Squanto told the Pilgrims that if they put some fish remains in the soil with the seed, it would aid the grain and vegetables. tribe to a Harvest feast where they would thank God for the wonderful harvest and for sending Squanto to teach them about this new land. So in fall of 1621, the Pilgrims, Squanto, Chief Massasoit and ninety of his warriors celebrated the first Thanksgiving, where they gave thanks to God for all his wonderful provisions and for blessing the Pilgrims in this new land, where they could worship him feely. In the late summer/early fall of 1621, Governor William Bradford invited Chief Massasoit and his If you are interested in reading more about Thanksgiving: Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving.
