Editorial God s Ambassadors Serving from the Heart by Deanna Barnes preteen from Texas said, Sometimes we think we have to go to another continent or give a huge amount of money to make changes in the world. But many times in the Bible, it shows that no matter the size, or value, or type of gift we give, it s the heart behind it that counts (Clubhouse Magazine, December 2015). If our students develop a heartfelt desire to serve as God s ambassadors during their preteen years, imagine the long-term results. I saw the enduring influence of two of God s ambassadors, our late pastor and his wife. They served as missionaries in Liberia, West Africa, during the 1950s. After returning to the United States, they came to lead our church. They often shared memories of a faithful Liberian man, who walked hours through the jungle to hear God s Word. Many years later I visited the church in Monrovia, Liberia, with my family. We were astonished to see the man in the audience. Though elderly and frail, he was still serving God and singing Lord, I Want to Be a Christian in My Heart. After the service, we enjoyed a meal with several church members at the home of the man s daughter. The delicious food was quite different from our normal diet. We could not understand much of the conversation. Yet we felt a closeness to the people because of a common bond: God s Spirit within our hearts. Jesus gave all to create that bond of love. He longs for us to share it with others. Let s follow His will and demonstrate to our students how to serve from the heart. All of us are God s ambassadors at home and around the world. 3 Theme Development Around the World Students will explore early church history this quarter, beginning with Jesus disciples leaving Jerusalem to teach the gospel in surrounding areas of the region. Each Bible lesson provides examples of the qualifications, rewards, and challenges of serving as a diplomat for the Lord. Students will connect the experiences of early church members to contemporary opportunities to serve as God s ambassadors within their communities and around the world. Let s help students reach a hand to those near and far sharing the love, grace, and power placed in our lives by Jesus Christ. He gave us an exciting, challenging directive: Go and teach all nations! Room Decoration Invite students to explore the connections between their hometown and distant global communities. Use décor to inspire a love for global missions. Create an environment of world travel and cultural exploration. Display various modes of transportation to help students realize many of God s ambassadors utilize a variety of vehicles because it takes much more than cars and freeways to reach all the people God loves. Basics The suggested decorating ideas can be adapted for any size classroom or teaching situation. Decorations can be basic or detailed and three-dimensional. Wall décor designs can be reduced in size to fit bulletin boards. Simply choose the best ideas for your students. For a complete room décor, consider covering each wall with plastic-backed painter s drop cloths to prevent paint seepage. Then attach white mural paper or butcher paper over the drop cloths. A projector and the reproducible theme art (trp) can then be used to transfer desired scenes to the walls. Details of each scene can be completed with paint. If you live in a humid area or have a basement classroom, be aware that mold and dampness could form behind the plastic. Another option is to use rolls of colored art paper or tablecloth plastic. Many school and art supply stores sell paper imprinted with cloud designs for sky scenery. While decorating the classroom, keep all important items for interaction and teaching at the students eye level. Anything higher should simply be used for decoration. Create an Exciting Entry Attach the door poster (trp) to the classroom door or near the entrance of the room. Place a globe on a table nearby. Display artifacts, clothing, or toy animals from various regions of the world. Add postcards, travel brochures or magazines, airline advertisements, and ethnic cookbooks. The arrangements could be changed weekly according to the travel destination chosen for the lesson. Consider having a check-in desk, similar to an airline check-in counter, where students could pick up their attendance charts and memory tracking maps before each class session. 3

Teaching Walls Wall 1: Instructional Wall This wall should be the classroom wall with a writing board. Add colorful borders of simple shapes or designs, cultural art, or illustrations of people that represent a variety of ages and cultures. For this quarter, attach the Kids in Missions map (trp) to this wall. Use the map each week as a reminder to pray for missionaries and their families. Consider posting weekly news about missionary children and their pets or missionary letters. See the missionary directory at www. globalmissions.com for information and links to missionary websites. Use this wall for the Mission: Salvation bulletin board (see bulletin board ideas). Teach and reinforce God s salvation throughout the quarter. Wall 2: Our World Create a map of the world. Begin by attaching blue paper or plastic to the entire wall. Project the continents reproducible theme art (trp) onto green paper. Cut out continent shapes and attach to the blue area as shown in illustration. Draw a circle to mark the location of your church. Write You are here! inside the circle. Label each continent and the oceans. It is not necessary to outline and label each country. Create thirteen arrows. The dots on the reproducible theme art designate where to place twelve of the arrows. The thirteenth arrow is provided to mark the location of your church. Cut apart the twelve cultural photos (trp). Place each with the corresponding arrow/location. Cut a circle from white posterboard to place near your hometown arrow. Throughout the quarter take pictures of local sites in your town. Print and post these pictures to represent your location. Teachers may choose the order in which students visit each destination. Travels may be coordinated with the attendance charts (see attendance section). Add extra interest by researching the destinations illustrated by the cultural photos. Each week share news, information, and facts about the featured region. Add a three-dimensional effect by putting a pushpin in the center of the circle that marks the location of your church. Tie a length of yarn to the pushpin. Each week as students explore a different region, connect the yarn to the location to indicate the travel distance from your church. Wall 3: Our Transportation Use the transportation vehicles reproducible theme art (trp) to project the images onto white paper. Fill in the images with colorful creativity, using markers or paint. Consider asking students to help. Attach the completed shapes randomly to the wall. Take pictures of students, print the photos, and cut each one for placement in the various modes of transportation. Add speech bubbles to portray students saying things such as Follow me as I follow Christ! or We re headed to Heaven! or Next stop (your church name)! 4 Wall 4: Our Scrapbook Construct a giant scrapbook on the wall, using the scrapbook reproducible theme art (trp). Use colored paper to create the larger outer cover of the book, and staple it to the center of the wall. Using the same shape scaled down, create the smaller inside pages with white paper. Center the white pages over the outer cover and staple in place. Glue or staple a length of wide ribbon to mark the fold of the book. Each week students will add a new scrap to mark their travels and learning experiences. The scrapbook entries can be artwork, quotes,

Scriptures, notes, or pictures. Pictures may include a map or postcard depicting the area visited during the class session. Students could also draw a flag or a famous landmark that represents the location. Option Make the scrapbook come to life by creating pages that actually turn like a real book. Use foam board for the outer covers (these will remain open/unmovable) and posterboard for the pages. Staple colored foam board flat to the wall with long staples (toward the left side of the wall) to serve as the front cover of the book. Secure each inner book page to the wall (rather than merely to each other) by folding one inch of the posterboard lengthwise and stapling it to the wall. Overlap that inch with the one-inch fold of the next page. Add as many pages as desired. Then staple foam board on the right side to serve as the back cover of the book. Use pushpins to keep the pages secure and out of the way when not in use. Bulletin Board Ideas Mission: Salvation Refer to this bulletin board during each class if possible, asking a volunteer to present the information to the class. Teach and review repentance, baptism in Jesus name, and receiving the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues the application of Jesus death, burial, and resurrection. Mission: Salvation Spotlight on Missions Use this board as a place to feature missionaries, missionary kids, missionary pets, correspondence, and anything else that will connect students to the real lives of missionaries. With and social media, many missionaries are as close as the click of a button. Consider corresponding with a missionary family and allowing students to get a firsthand look at the great work God is doing in other parts of the world. My Mission Field Provide a bulletin board area that features schools your students attend. Compare the schools to a personal mission field. Add space for students to write names of teachers, principals, and classmates. Take time during the quarter to pray for the schools and names. Discuss methods students can use to positively impact their schools. He s Got the Whole World in His Hands Use the God s hands and Earth reproducible theme art (trp) to create a board that presents a visual of God s hands (as described in Psalm 95:4; Isaiah 40:12; 48:13; Amos 4:13) holding planet Earth. Optional: Students can create the planet shape with impressions of their own handprints, either cut from blue and green construction paper or by using blue and green paint imprints. All God s Children Create a board illustrating the beauty of diversity in our world. Help students draw and/or cut out pictures of themselves, their friends, and their family members to form a collage. Add pictures cut from magazines and newspapers to represent different people, cultures, ethnicities, and abilities. We re all God s children. Additional theme-related ideas: Teachers could wear outfits resembling airline attendants or pilots. Stack a few suitcases around the room to suggest travel adventures. 5

Create nametags for each student. Print God s Ambassador above each name. Place the nametags in plastic covers attached to lanyards for students to wear during class. Suspend international flags from the ceiling. Hang a plastic blow-up world globe. Attendance Students will use the back of the activity paper tear-off pages to track attendance. It is also available in the teacher s resource packet and as a downloadable resource. Each week as students arrive, have them color a travel icon on their suitcases which represents their new travel destination. There is a blank icon for students to make their own designs to represent their home town. If attendance prizes are planned for the end of the quarter, please be sensitive to students who may not be able to attend class due to circumstances beyond their control. Provide opportunities for those students to color in a sticker for class participation or examples of Christian character. In this manner all students will be included, regardless of attendance. Memory Work In an effort to help students retain Scripture in their long-term memory, they will study and memorize a Scripture passage for each unit. In addition to improving retention, this method provides a deeper understanding of Scripture and how it applies to life today. This quarter, students will use a memory chart, located on the last page of the activity paper, to track their memory work by coloring a portion of the map each week. Offering Make some noise for missions! Collect offering in an aluminum can or metal bucket. Shake it around and make a big deal as students toss, dunk, or slam their coins into the container. With your pastor s permission, designate the offering for global missions. Volunteers Randomly selecting names as a way of choosing volunteers can help maintain order and expedite processes during class sessions. Create a class spinner with each student s name written in a separate section. Use a paper plate, markers, a brass fastener, and a paper clip. (If you don t have a brass fastener, use a pencil to secure the paper clip in the middle of the plate when spinning.) Each time you need a helper, use the spinner to choose someone. Use sticky notes to cover the names of absent students. Consider creating a section for Guest. Activity Papers The activity papers, now an integral part of each lesson, help students understand and retain what they are learning. The teacher will be directed within each lesson when and how to use the activity paper. Activities will be connected to a variety of the lesson segments throughout the quarter, so make certain each student has an activity paper. Encourage students to take their activity papers home and refer to the lesson concepts often. Kids in Missions Inspire a love for global missions using the Kids in Missions newsletter and map. The newsletter is now on page 8. The map is available in the resource packet. To enhance the quarter s theme, consider corresponding with a foreign missionary or following a missionary s ministry via social media. Students will especially enjoy information about missionary children and their pets. 6

Teacher Training Resources Visit for valuable training resources. Teachers can explore a variety of free informative articles and creative ideas. Child Information Form See for a form that includes a section for parents or guardians to grant permission to photograph and share pictures of students. Keep the signed forms on file if you share students pictures on Facebook or any other public site. Home Connection The Home Connection is a take-home paper designed to equip parents in reinforcing the lesson. It is available in the TRP for photocopying, or it is available via the URL listed on page two on the activity paper. 7

K DS in M ss ons South America Regional Directors: Darry & Kathy Crossley Key Project: Brother and Sister John Guidry are missionaries in Colombia, South America. They love going out into the countryside and visiting the smaller churches. Columbia has been labeled as the drug and crime capital of South America. Some of the children that attend the churches have parents that do not attend with them. Some of them are involved in the drug industry. Brother and Sister Guidry desire to build a youth center and would also like to get more instruments for the small churches. Having musical instruments provides a way for the congregations to teach children in the community how to play the instruments and get them into church. Have the students make a guitar out of a shoebox, adding a cardboard tube for the neck and yarn for the strings. Create drums as well. Each week students bring offering to place inside the drums or guitar. Send the offering to Global Missions to help the churches of Columbia get instruments! Mark the church check with the account number GMGP for proper distribution. Pray for: Protection for the missionaries, the national workers, and the church. The area is troubled with drugs, violence, kidnappings, and robberies. Good health for our missionaries and short-term workers. Several countries in this region have high altitudes that cause many to be sick and have lung problems. Godly contacts in each nation for doors to open to revival. Pray that God will bring the missionaries before the leaders of the land and give them favor. Revival to flourish in South America. There are many nations without missionaries. Special Focus: Bennie and Theresa DeMerchant recently celebrated fifty years of being missionaries to the country of Brazil. The church has flourished under their leadership. 93 Bible schools with 5,000 students 1,200 churches with 90,000 constituents Bennie DeMerchant has flown his Cessna seaplane for over 15,000 hours in the Amazon. With this special airplane he is able to land on the Amazon river and bring in food, medical help, and preach the gospel to people who are not accessible via roads. They will usually preach, set up a hammock in the church as a quick bed, and head out to the jungle again the next day! As you can imagine, this airplane needs a lot of upkeep and work. This quarter pray for the church of Brazil. Pray for a greater revival and that more missionaries would have a desire to move to Brazil to help in this work. Pray for safety for Brother and Sister DeMerchant as they fly into these remote areas. Why not take a special offering to help Brother DeMerchant with his airplane expenses? Have the students draw a seaplane and write a note to the DeMerchants thanking them for fifty years of service. Your special offering can be sent to Global Missions. Mark the church check with the account number GMGP for proper distribution.
