First Lutheran Church Vancouver, BC Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada First Sunday in Lent February 18, 2018
Welcome to First Lutheran Church Founded Wales Street, Vancouver V5R 3N3 Phone: Fax: First Lutheran is a community, a gathering of people of diverse ages, cultures and traditions. Just as Jesus opened himself to all and, by implication, opened the reign of God to all, so we, the members of First Lutheran seek to do the same. Therefore, all are welcome here regardless of their race, gender or sexual orientation; regardless of their social, economic, educational, linguistic or relationship status; regardless of their citizenship, religious or cultural background or makeup of their family; and regardless of their physical, mental, emotional or spiritual condition. There is a place for you in our community worship, service and life. To our Visitors: Welcome! You are invited to sign our guest book in the Narthex (lobby) and join us for coffee and conversation downstairs after worship, where our friendly congregants will meet and greet you. For your convenience, there is an elevator in the southwest corner of the building, fully accessible washrooms on the main floor in the northwest corner and two washrooms down the stairs at the east end of the lower level. A special welcome to worshippers who are unable to be physically present and are joining us online for to day s service. First Lutheran is easily accessible via major city routes - 41st Avenue and Kingsway and Bus #41 runs west from the Joyce Street Skytrain station. Ample parking is available in a lot just west of the church and on the church side of the two streets--wales Street and 42nd Avenue. The wheelchair entrance is also the office entrance on 42nd Avenue. The present building, erected in 1957, is the third in our history. Founded by Scandinavian fishermen, First Lutheran is tied closely to the history of Vancouver. Our logo reflects our ethnic and Christian roots, our West Coast location as well as the varied people and cultures which enrich our life and ministry together. 3 First Sunday in Lent February 18, 2018 Holy Communion, Setting Three Worshippers may wish to light a votive candle in memory of a loved one or for meditation. This may be done at any time before or during the liturgy except during community prayers, readings or homily. Since the number of candles is limited and to avoid mishaps, parents and caregivers are asked to be attentive when allowing children to light one. INTRODUCTION On Ash Wednesday the church began its journey toward baptismal immersion in the death and resurrection of Christ. This year, the Sundays in Lent lead us to focus on five covenants God makes in the Hebrew Scriptures and to use them as lenses through which to view baptism. First Peter connects the way God saved Noah s family in the flood with the way God saves us through the water of baptism. The baptismal covenant is made with us individually, but the new life we are given in baptism is for the sake of the whole world. PRELUDE Prelude in D Minor Antonio Vivaldi Have Mercy on Me, O Lord Johann Sebastian Bach ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM p. 97 GATHERING HYMN # 326 Bless Now, O Lord, the Journey GREETING The grace of Jesus Christ our Saviour, the reconciling love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE p. 138 PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray: Holy God, heavenly Father, in the waters of the flood you saved the chosen, and in the wilderness of temptation you protected your Son from sin. Renew us in the gift of baptism. May your holy angels be with us, that the wicked foe may have no power over us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 3
WORD CHILDREN S MESSAGE by Denise Pawliuk FIRST READING: Genesis 9:8-17 Today s reading is the conclusion to the flood story. Because of human sin, the Lord destroys the earth by flood, saving only Noah, his family, and the animals on the ark. Yet divine destruction gives way to divine commitment. As in the first creation, God blesses humanity and establishes a covenant with all creatures. 8 God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. 12 God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. 17 God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth. Response after the reading: Word of God; word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM 25:1-10 (cantor sings the refrain; then all sing the refrain) Tone Refrain 1 To you, O LFGH, I lift up my soul. 2 My God, I put my trust in you; let me not be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. 4
3 Let none who look to you be put to shame; rather let those be put to shame who are treacherous. 4 Show me your ways, O LABC, and teach me your paths. R 5 Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. 6 Remember, O LABC, your compas- sion and love, for they are from everlasting. 7 Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your steadfast love and for the sake of your good- ness, O LFGH. 8 You are gracious and up- right, O LABC; therefore you teach sinners in your way. R 9 You lead the low- ly in justice and teach the low- ly your way. 10 All your paths, O LABC, are steadfast love and faithfulness to those who keep your covenant and your testimonies. R SECOND READING: 1 Peter 3:18-22 As God acted through Christ s suffering and death to bring us to God, so God acts through baptism to save us from a sinful existence. This spiritual cleansing marks our new life in Christ. 18 Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20 who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. 21 And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. Response after the reading: Holy word; holy wisdom. Thanks be to God. CHOIR ANTHEM Go Down Moses arr. Vicki Tucker Courtney GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Return to the Lord, your God p. 142b Sing before and after reading. Please rise. GOSPEL: Mark 1:9-15 The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. The Spirit that comes upon Jesus at his baptism sustains him when he is tested by Satan so that he might proclaim the good news of God s reign. 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. 12 And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the 5
wilderness. 13 He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. The gospel concludes: The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. HOMILY (silence for reflection follows) HYMN OF THE DAY (Please rise) # 807 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Each portion of the prayers ends with these words: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING p. 144 HOLY, HOLY, HOLY p. 144 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (Prayer over the gifts) p. 111 THE LORD S PRAYER p. 145 FRACTION The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. LAMB OF GOD p. 146 It is Christ himself who invites all the baptized members of God s family and all our guests to come to his table where he gives his body and blood, along with the gifts of forgiveness, life and salvation under the forms of bread and wine. After receiving a wafer into the open, upraised palm, all may drink from the first (common) cup or, if desired, dip the wafer into the second (intinction) cup. Those who desire prayer and anointing for the healing of any illness or brokenness in mind, body or spirit are invited to receive these blessings after communion. 6

Parish Care Center Annual General Meeting today after service in the lower Hall at First Lutheran Church. All members of FLC are members of PCC and are welcome to attend the meeting. Our sung liturgy, beginning today and continuing for the following five Sundays of Lent, will be Setting Three, found on page 138 in our ELW. Those familiar with its predecessor (LBW) will recognize that Setting One (LBW green book) and Setting Three (ELW red book) are identical. Being God s Hands an online Lenten devotional Many of us desire to spend more time in spiritual practice than we do, but often find it challenging to make space for it in our lives. Lutherans Connect the online presence of the Lutheran Campus Ministry in Toronto through their online devotional project makes it easier for us to make space for reflection every day. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, through a daily blog linked to Facebook and Twitter they will offer a daily meditation bringing together scripture readings, poetry, music and reflections from a range of ecumenical traditions. This year s theme comes from Psalm 90 and we will be asked to reflect on what happens when we choose to live as the body of Christ in love and service with our neighbors and the world. 12 THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Each portion of the prayers ends with these words: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Renewed in the promises of baptism, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. A brief silence. We pray for the church. For all who preach, teach, and inspire your people to lives of service. Renew your church in ministry, mission, and compassion. Unite us in faith, and uphold us in the promises of baptism. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for the world. For the well-being of both our own surroundings and of distant places. For favorable weather and sustaining rains. For creatures awakening from hibernation or beginning seasonal migrations. Provide safe habitats and abundant food for all. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for the nations. For all who govern or hold positions of authority. For those who work to make their communities safe from violence. Protect all who place themselves in danger to save others from harm. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for this assembly. For musicians, artists, and poets who help us envision your love through word, image, and song. For those who have faced exclusion or felt forgotten. For all who reach out in love and welcome. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for those in need. For those moving to new communities. For individuals who are incarcerated or recently released from prison. For those who are abused or neglected, for the lonely, and for those who are ill. We pray especially for and for those whom we name aloud or silently in our heart... Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. With thanksgiving, we remember those who have died. As they receive the fulfillment of your promises made to them in baptism, sustain us in the hope of resurrection life with you. We remember especially...and those whom we name aloud or silently in our heart.. We remember especially...and those whom we name aloud or silently in our heart.. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Trusting in your covenant of mercy, O God, we lift our prayers to you, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen. 12
